Arrival
What an amazing movie. Definitely something to see twice, if nothing else to see it from start to finish with new eyes.

I love science fiction. It is nice to see an alien that is not a human in a rubber suit. Of course the biggest reason they are humans in heavy makeup is that is a lot cheaper to produce.
I have not see Arrival and this is the first I have heard of the movie. I remember reading Arthur C. Clarke's novel Childhood End back when I was 9 or 10. I loved it. It got me to reading all the great masters of Science Fiction. I really hope I live long enough to see the day we have confirmation of intelligent life on other planets. I sure hope they are a Start Trek Federation type of extraterrestrials. I can't imagine why they would want to come here to battle us. There are virtually infinite numbers of other planets.

We saw this yesterday. It is NOT what you think it is about... Won't spoil it for you by giving away the storyline.
Excellent movie and worth seeing a second time. angela

I keep hoping for signs of intelligent life on this planet!
The movie sounds interesting, I haven't been to a theater in years. Cheers Richard |

I read the BBC News website and occasionally see the movie reviews that they post. I swear it seems like all of the reviews are bad, but this was the closest that I'd seen to a good review.
I want to see the movie. BBC - Culture - Arrival is the smartest big-budget sci-fi film in years

I would guard against reading reviews or descriptions.

One trend in movies that I am LOVING, is science and scientists are showing as normal humans, and smart and saving us from a problem.
Movies like The Martian and Interstellar have normal humans going about life and they are not the wild goofy "scientist" like in Back to the Future. I loved the Back to the Future series but the scientist was a typical movie mad scientist.

Saw it yesterday. I really wanted to like it. But I have to admit, in the end I was like "wut?". Seems like it was edited way down and they left some story links out.
Possible SPOILERS, so dont read if your worried about that: - Time travel? is that what "the weapon" was? Thin storyline. Maybe Ill see it after I watch it again sometime. - Whats with the planting of the bomb? The two main characters nearly die and when they wake up not so much as a "WTF Colonel, why'd you do that?". Just one line with something like "Just some military types" or something like that. |

I thought it was great; way better than I even hoped (which was already a high bar).
911_Dude, thoughts on your questions. 1.) I think 'weapon' was just a mistranslation from the heptapod word for tool. I believe this is even proposed by Louise. 2.) I can understand leaving out the conversation where the Colonel tells them it was the fanatical Captain and his associates, since the audience already knows it was them and it would just be redundant information at that time.

To me the main story line focus was too much on the people involved and kinda grazed over the storyline of the aliens "mission." It's all there, but could have been presented a little less dreamy for lack of a better word.

They went to great lengths to get her to talk to these things, She was the one translator for the US yet nobody seemed to debrief her very much. just a lot of her staring out into space having flashbacks.
Ditto about nobody seemed to care that a bomb went off and almost killed them. Lot of military security but nobody seemed to care who did what. SPOILER (If by understanding the universal language she can connect time-and we will help them out in some vague way in the future, why not clue us in as to how we save them with all the flashbacks going on. Like most female hero movies recently the man kind of bluffs around without adding anything in both the scientific and family storylines. I saw it as an allegory of Hillary the academic strategizing our most complex foreign policy challenges specifically with China and saving our future while men in power are shown as clueless and or warlike. There is a lot better sci-fi. |

Sorry...I need something more imaginative than cephlapods to believe a story like this. The storyline was weak.
I expected a lot better.
