Got hauled into HR today, nervous as hell
Got an appointment on my Outlook from HR today which included my boss and his boss 2:30 PM is the appointment time and its 11:00 AM, I ask the Boss what's up and he says he can't discuss it with me. WTF did I do? So I'm sweating bullets for 3-1/2 hours. Finally get to the meeting, and its about me being a potential witness to one crew member punching another crew member on one of my shows a few weeks ago. I was in the building, but didn't witness it and I told security at the time, that I didn't see a thing.
HR wants to verify that I saw nothing, or knew anything about what lead to the punch. Fuchking A, if that is all it is, don't keep me on edge for 3-1/2 hours on something I wasn't involved with.

Short notice meetings with no agenda. No way for you to prepare. It's another manuever (intimidation) used by HR used against employees in more companies every year. There was no policy violated so no foul. HR departments are loaded with some of the most manipulative fuchers on the planet.

I had the same thing yesterday Hugh. Meeting was scheduled for 24 hours later. Then at the last minute moved to Monday. ...so I called and said, "if this is something bad, you need to tell me now because this creates a lot of anxiety with zero detail".
Turns out to be something good for one of my team. But ffs!

In the course of my 35 year career, I've been called into HR more times than I can remember. I have never been told why beforehand. At first I went, because it's all pretty intimidating. You always thing it's you. Well, after about a decade of it never being me, I quit going. One of the beauties of my job, and the often "emergent" nature of it, is I can always say I was on my way, but I got sidetracked by a time critical customer requirement. Not knowing the nature of the HR requirement, and forced to prioritize on the fly, why - "the customer always comes first".
Fuch HR people. They are there for the company, not the employee. Ignore them whenever possible. Make them work for it.

I mentioned this to Donna who deals with a lot of HR issues and I guess it comes down to confidentiality, I sort of get that. BUT the Boss could have at least said "Hugh, this isn't about you, its about someone else" or something like that. I was going to a crew Holiday lunch on "How to Get Away with Murder" and I certainly didn't enjoy myself, in fact, it sucked for me with the wondering about WTF.

Meanwhile... A lot of HR services are being "Offshored". I can't help but see the irony in that
![]() "Capgemini" used to have a large team in Adelaide servicing several different companies but over the last 6 months they've "Offshored" about 90 jobs to India. Seems everyone is feeling the pinch.

I can't say how much I dislike HR.
My favorite? When a company laid off local HR and moved it to the home office. When they laid me off two weeks later? They forgot to cancel my health insurance. I had double coverage from that outfit for years. |

The keys to being HRs nightmare rather than them being yours.
First be so good at your job that you could kill someone and not even get written up. Second, know the rules better than them. They rarely know everything that's in the handbook and that is a huge club to beat them with. Third, know who has skeletons and where they are buried. Make sure they know you know.

I have flat out had it with the HR department at work. I met with my "rep" four months ago about an employee I put on a performance plan. This employee has done a 180 from last year, he's now a model employee, and he's happier, and so am I.
Fast forward to a week ago and I put this employee in for a decent raise to be effective in Feb, (annual increases) and the HR puke refused to file it saying I can't give an employee on a performance plan a raise for at least 12 months. I'm ready to kill these people. (btw HR can't produce documentation on this rule) I learned in business school that HR was there to assist in employee issues, and to help management. What I have now is HR being the complete overlords of the entire business. It's maddening! Sorry to rant in your thread Hugh, but I'm about to become their next HR issue if this keeps up.

I dealt with HR when I was hired 16 years ago. Not since.
I have been called into my boss's office on short notice a few times. Always turns out to be something unspectacular.

HR departments were created by ex Gestapo agents seeking employment after WW2. Hugh apparently ran into a graduate of the Eichman school of persuasive management.
After the fall of the USSR many ex KGB types were recruited for expertise in being able to get people to be cooperative. Their greatest success is in being able have soon to be laid off employees train their offshore replacements. |
