Has anyone here ever heard of the band "Barachois" they toured around N.A. for years.
That band was made up mostly of brothers and sisters of my pilot friend.

Good band with lots and lots of old timey Cajun music.

He did get out OK.

BTW the pilot is gone today to Cape Breton, where he will board our next vessel the MV "Azoresborg". Sydney being the closest ice free harbour in the Maritimes. The pilot is also licensed to take vessels under the bridge which joins PEI to NB, so he's going to be busy for awhile since we have 3 more ships due in this month

So he took a bus to Cape Breton, then he'll have to sail to PQ to disembark then drive back to PEI or CB to take in the next vessel and so on. No wonder he's trying to retire. Younger man's game now.

PS Hope this stuff is of some interest to someone or other. It's always been great entertainment for me.

I

So, got the ice breaker in today to clear a path for our ship tomorrow. Surprised to see already a foot of ice.

The pilot, who got on board yesterday , gets off our ship tomorrow and heads right back to Sydney, C.B. NS to get on another ship and then does it AGAIN on or about the 28th for yet another ship. Doubtful he'll be home for Christmas. A shame really, but........

From what I've heard, harbor pilots are quite well paid. Takes some of the sting out of missing Christmas.

Is leaving a harbor without a guide the same as building a car without a union of brothers local 456? Hmmmmm Maybe some people can do it without help.

Absolutely! I love this kind of stuff. I love learning about what others do - it's one of the nicest perks of getting to know you guys.

Says the guy who travels around the world fixing bent jet airplanes.

I agree. The geek is strong with this group. You can learn about all kinds of things around here. I love it.
Best of the Season to all Pelicans.

Yes I really enjoy your photos Yellowperil. The logistics of moving freight in the frozen sea and unloading it is impressive. The sheer size of those ships. And of course you are working outdoors in a cold damp environment. Well done!

Very cool thread. I'd heard a tiny bit about this sort of thing, but it can't compare to this sort of up close and personal stories.

another one

Thanks for making this thread sound interesting, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Another ship today, and then we should wrap it up in a week or two.

BTW, in the draught (draft in US) picture, you can see a bit of the bow thruster area.
