Another "Texting While Driving" moron dies...

...after not figuring it out after her first texting-caused wreck. Sad story. Let your kids/grandkids read the article and tell them not to text while driving.

Girl Who Survived Texting And Driving Once Runs Out Of Luck 2nd Time Around

...got into her first accident in 2006 when she was broadsided by another driver and her car flipped three times, according to The Modesto Bee. Fortunately, she survived the crash with only bruises and scrapes.
:::snip:::
Almost exactly one year later in 2007, Clark lost control of the car she was driving while on a highway; cell phone records indicate she was texting at the time. First responders said it took them 40 minutes to free Clark from the totaled car and that she had not been breathing for a whole 20 minutes by that time. She passed away the following day.

Not inspired by this incident... it's just that it clearly illustrates the scary teen-20's mindset about not taking driving seriously enough (that some... not all... have):

2007 ?

Most people here I'm sure know of the dangers of texting and driving. I'm sure a few here still do it though, and soon your car is going to be doing the driving for you. That seems to be the response.

That's what ten years will do.

Earth needs more Darwin Award Winners. I just hope they don't get anyone else killed while they are collecting their award.

This, Sad for her family but I am glad she is not driving anymore. And she managed to not kill a innocent family. Until they elevate texting and driving penalties to equal and even exceed a DWI, it will continue to be a killer of many people.

Several times a week I read news of new self-driving car developments, new labs and engineering facilities, new testing grounds, old plants being converted for production.

Much of this in the state of Michigan.

The writing is on the wall.

Around DFW I see a lot of purty young gals texting in fancy Escallades, weaving in and out of traffic, I stay well clear of them. Its a shame that this happens, someone needs to invent a texting vehicle entry program that cuts off their hand held device until they are well clear of their vehicle!

Reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld's bit on helmets. So instead of avoiding the activities that crack our skulls, we invent something so we can continue to do said activities.

See a lot of the younger girls on facebook taking and posting selfies while they're a driving, and I mean like driving down the highway at speed with traffic visible all around them, and here they are snapping photos of themselves. It's crazy

Yes, instead of helping the situation, automakers are doing just the opposite. They're designing more & more connectivity and expensive driver aids into their vehicles instead of downplaying the driver's perceived 'need' to stay in touch with everybody and everything but their driving. All new Hondas will now 'read' incoming texts aloud, so a driver won't be deprived of getting that oh-so-important message about what their friend is having for lunch. There's also a TV commercial running now by a car company (Volvo??) that depicts a driver who's daydreaming about being some kind of sports hero instead of paying attention to the road. No problem though, the commercial goes on to say, because the car will automatically brake if it senses a person or other obstruction in its path. The message coming across here is this: You don't need to pay attention to your driving, so go ahead and text, tweet, Instagram, or maybe even have that one last drink for the road...your car will look out for you. At least until the system 'hiccups' and someone winds up getting hurt, or even killed.

Condolences to her family.

Having said that, I agree with Glen. You (sometimes literally) live and die with the choices you make. I'm glad no one else (outside of her family & friends) had to pay the penalty for her selfishness and stupidity.

We need better driving education and tests before getting DLs. There should be levels.

Driving is a privilege, not a right.

BTW it's still 100% LEGAL to use your cell phone while driving here in Florida.

How much sense does that make?

What is the point of texting laws and the others on the books saying you must use a speaker and mic while on a voice call? They aren't enforced. It would be impossible. Is it enforcement after the fact? You crashed and we can prove you were on the phone so there is a stiffer penalty?

The average walking speed is 3.1mph.
Disable the phone if over 10mph.
If GPS is disabled, so is the phone.
Pretty easy solution.
We just haven't killed enough people yet to make this a mandate.

That will help protect us from all those dangerous folks using the phone on a train or bus! Brilliant.
