Getting rid of a timeshare

When we got married my wife already had a timeshare. I've never really been a fan of timeshares and for the last few years we really haven't been using it.

Does anyone have any experience with getting out of a timeshare successfully/not too painfully? I realize there are companies now that will get you out (for a fee).

I think you can donate them for a nice tax deduction. A friend of mine did that with hers a couple of years ago.

If I'm not mistaken, that might not remove you from all liability... but take that with a heavy grain of salt

There's a firm that advertises on the morning news radio station here in LA that specializes (and guarantees success) is exactly this. I'll try to pay attention next week while commuting in to work.

Years ago, we managed to sell one via a Timeshare sales place. IIRC. You could not pay a fee and they would take a cut of the sales or you could pay a fee and then keep the proceeds of the sale. I think it eventually sold after a few years. We didn't pester or contact them about the sale. It was great to finally get rid of the darn thing.

My parents have been trying to get of one for a few years and they finally just stopped paying the yearly fees. After a few letters and phone calls back and forth, the company just agreed and took it back and released them.

Carlsbad Seapointe, CA. Right across from Carlsbad Blvd and the beach (and a stone's throw from Hoehn Porsche dealer...). We like the place we just haven't been using it.
