I remember in 2010 we were up there and got 14' of snow from Wed-Sun. You really had to know where you were going in town, the snow was piled so high it was like driving through canyons, couldn't see houses or businesses behind them.

My sister lives in Ridgway and does ski patrol and avy control at Telluride, and this has been a pretty fantastic winter for her so far. She loves this storm. Some of the above photos remind me of when she lived in Nederland and they got about 8 feet of snow in a day and a half.

We were at Tahoe the same time and there was no snow. I mean none. Before we left, I was thinking, no matter how bad, there must be some snow for beginning skier. My kids were just old enough to really benefit from lessons. They only skied once before that and it was local, basically skied on ice. Yep, they were hurting.

It is pretty cool when it dumps snow like that though. Wake up and it does not seem possible that much fell while you were sleeping
Got about four feet in a day of hard snowing at Tahoe, 1989 maybe, got an earthquake and a blizzard in the same year. Were able to ski up Mt Rose Hiway to the overlook too much snow to drive, rented cross country skis, up we went. I have pictures somewhere, taken a month apart at that spot. January, nothing, dirt. February, chest high powder with plenty more coming. Power was out for 3 days, but the phone worked, damnedest thing. Lucky thing too, because Joe and Cindy needed rescuing. Had Squaw Valley to ourselves for a day, because 50 and 80 were closed for snow removal and we could make it because we were already up there, beat the storm. I bet it will be beautiful with all that fresh snow. Holiday weekend too, bonus.

There is a bit of a difference between freezing your nuts off for 6 mo. in MN. and spending a few days in snow in the CA. Sierras.

The last couple pictures show why plow trucks, (PU trucks), are not used there. You need to be able to lift or toss the snow 10 feet in the air.

Buddy of mine from Ontario talked about taking a snow blower on the roof, might have been pulling my leg..
How much did you have to dig to get the truck out, or did you just clear it off enough to see, put it in 4 low and roll out?

![]() It's not the fresh stuff that's the problem, it's the getting plowed-in overnight. That stuff is cement and it was 3 feet deep under what you can see there.

I'm surprised that roof is still standing. That's some unbelievable weight.

With an inch or two of rain on top of that...I'd bet it would go down.

How come they don't incorporate radiant heating like they do driveways. I have no experience building in anyplace but socal. We only have to worry about wall colors, none of that nasty stuff that can rot or damage a home. I would install some sort of radiant heating system so the snow will melt off the roof. anything like that out there?

We had a cabin at 7,000 feet. The key is to have a roof with more than a 45 degree pitch. In fact, there should be two pitch angles, with the ridge at around a 45, and the sides much steeper. This will ensure that the snow will not build up, and cave in the roof.
I hate to say it, but a lot of the cabins in these pics have no shutters on the windows, probably no storm door, and roofs that are way too flat. |
