Roll Tide?
So we've been on the college hunt for my daughter.
Been going to presentations and visiting schools. Alabama was in town this week and sent us an invite to come meet them. As it stands right now based on her GPA and PSAT score they'd give her 2/3rds tuition scholarship. She's been busting her ass prepping for the SAT which she just took last Saturday. If she improved 50 points she's 100% guaranteed a full ride. Had not really considered Alabama beforehand but the presentation was impressive and the money they are offering is staggering to say the least. So, tell me about "Bama", not just the school but in general.

Tuscaloosa is a typical college town. I have not been there in decades and I am sure it has grown a lot. Birmingham is an hour drive away.

G'day!
|
I posted a message on a Bama board I frequent, Scott, and will let you know what they say later on when I get back in.
I've heard a lot of good things about UA, but have no first-hand experience. Much respect to you and your daughter for her endeavours thus far!

What does she want to major in? Does that University have a good program in that area?

Your daughter's accomplishments are impressive, Scott. I wish her well wherever she goes.
![]() Maybe she can grow up and get a job as a PPOT moderator. There seems to be an opening.

Undergrad, right? Doesn't really matter. If price is right it'll be fine. Great football team, weather and well respected academically.
Never understood why people spend mega bucks for undergrad schools. I have one at UGA and one at GA Tech (aerospace),mostly because we live in GA.

My daughter is in college now and has two friends at Bama. Socially the campus is made up of sororities and fraternities. Probably the largest Greek system of any school. Rush is huge.

Alabama has an undergraduate enrollment of over 36,000 peeps.
I went to a large university. In retrospect, I would have preferred a smaller setting. She might as well. 'Bama is all Greek, all the time. Remember, you paid me exactly zippy for my trenchant advice ![]() BTW, congratulations...nothing more gratifying than being pleased with the accomplishments of a child. She is on her way.

She will be going for STEM related.
Obviously she's changed her mind a few times, Chemical Engineering was what she was leaning towards but she's settled on a Math major and English minor. She's a great writer, taking Latin for her language. There is no shortage of jobs for people with math skills who can write / communicate. UT was and is her first choice followed very closely by Tulaine. We looked at Rice and she did not dig the vibe. We would prefer Tulaine due to size, ~8k enrollment, but not the price. One of the other primary things for her is a representative Jewish population which all three so far have. Tulaine has a huge Jewish population, they call it Jewlaine. One thing we liked about Alabama was the way their curriculum is structured and that her HS courses have been almost all AP her applied credits means she could easily walk out of there with a Grad degree in 5 years. We had not even considered Alabama till my wife was speaking with her sister who is considering Alabama for her son who is a year younger than my daughter. That's why when we got the invitation we said what the hell, doesn't hurt to look. Jokingly I said, hey, if they go to school together and fall in love they could get legally married in Alabama. That one did not go over so well. First time I've seen my SIL speechless.
