Unfortunately the people with the odor do not smell it due to olfactory fatigue or adaptation. Same thing happens when folk apply too much cologne or perfume. They go into a cycle of splashing more on because they think it has worn off, but it just further deadens their ability to smell it. My brother tells a story about when he was a forward observer in the Army Artillery. They would dump his FO team off in the jungle for many days where they would call in artillery on enemy positions. When they had to be extracted a Huey would show up to get them out. The chopper crew had spent the previous nights in a clean bunk and had a shower that morning while the FO team had not bathed for well over a week. They could not smell their own BO or each others because they had been in close proximity for the duration. The poor helicopter guys would have fits.

OT here but...

Back in univ, in my last year I had a roommate who was Pre-med. He came from a family with many MDs so he "had to become a doctor!" We decided that when it came time to general cleaning (bathrooms, kitchen floor, etc) we'd alternate weeks. I'd go week 1 and he'd go week 2.

So week 1, I perform my duties using the proper disinfectant cleaners for the task at hand (Mr. Clean is my fave). Next week it's his turn.....BUT what do I catch him doing?! He basically takes a wet face cloth and simply wipes down all surfaces....I mean toilet bowl, toilet seat, bathroom counter then bathroom sink, etc....with the same cloth and with only warm water....no effen soap or cleaners....GROSS!! I confront him! "Dave, are you farkin crazy! And you want to become a DOCTOR!?!...You're gonna kill someone!"

Unreal!

I never did find out whether he got accepted into med school.....BUT if you ever come across a Dr. David Cohen.....RUN!!
