Dang you Higgins!

So last week, my uncle asks what I know about air rifles....not a damn thing...but told him I "knew" people . Diana/RWS 34 shows up a bit ago...BIG ol' grin!!! It feels "right" and shoots like a dream for the few shots I've taken off my deck, but the safety doesn't seem to work....out of the box, I couldn't manually engage it prior to cockng, nor did the cock engage it automatically either...three shots this way, then fourth cock does engage the safety and I flip it off prior to shot. Safety is still "frozen" however. Keep shooting her a bit and see if things loosen up??? I think I'm gonna have fun with this

In 1968 when I was 10 years old my parents and I flew to Germany to see my one living grandparent . While there my dad took me to a gun shop that happened to be the same shop my great grandfather , grandfather and dad purchased weapons from . We walked into the shop empty handed but walked out with a .177 Diana air rifle it looks just like the one in your pic .
I still have that air rifle today I will never get rid of it. Hours of fun target shooting and then moved up to killing quite a few squirrels with it . It does not feel like a toy it feels like a rifle........it is just a lot of fun to shoot . Congrats and have fun with her .

Heh heh heh... "My work here is finished." Actually, it's never finished...

I'm glad you like it. Out of my collection of air rifles, this one has definitely turned into my "most shot". I have more powerful ones, more expensive ones, but there is just something about this one. These are truly a joy to handle and shoot. Congratulations.

Oh, and that safety - give it some time. These things do have a break-in period that might take a whole tin of pellets. It's not meant to engage manually before cocking; mine won't either. Purely automatic upon cocking.

Congrats...a sweet one. Now you get to fry your brain on which of all the pellets out there your rig prefers.
.
Have had my RWS Diana Mod. 38 for twenty-five plus years. Lovely to shoot and accurate. Somewhere over 1,000 fps., don't remember.

I could have included you in the thread title too...

Opted for a .177 without a scope...doubt I'll add one after just a handful of shots from 30 yds or so with the open sights. When my uncle was asking last week, I told him he had probably just cost me some $....now he's gonna pay for that .

Good plan. These things don't really need scopes, and they are awfully hard on them anyway. That, and a scope ruins the wonderful "feel" and balance of these rifles. They come equipped with outstanding open sights anyway.

That said, I did put a Williams peep sight on mine. Actually, all but two of my air rifles have the Williams peep on them. That's just a personal preference, though, coupled with aging eyes.

The two I have scoped are purely for my night time rat shooting. One is my RWS 48 side-cocker, the other is my hot rodded Benjamin 392 pneumatic. The RWS 48 has destroyed two scopes already, a cheap Leapers that is supposed to be suitable for high powered springers, and a Bushnell. It now wears a Weaver rimfire scope, which they rate for springers. This is a really big, ungainly, heavy rifle to begin with, so mounting a scope doesn't really ruin its aesthetic appeal. It didn't have any to begin with. The 34 is just too nice to encumber like that.

Mine is in .22 caliber, so this may not apply. Its favorite seems to be the H&N 14.66 grain Field Target Trophy round nose. It also like Crossman Premier round noses. I've found the H&N Field Target Trophy to shoot very well in all of my rifles. For heavier than standard for caliber pellets, I've found the JSB's to shoot quite well.

Sell it and run quickly to Bass Pro shops and find a nice Gammo air rifle.

If I wanted cheap Chinese junk, I'd have gone to Gander Mtn. . I keed....

I'm gonna declare the rifle "perfect" after shooting a bit more yesterday. Since the safety doesn't engage manually (contrary to the pamplet), I was inadvertantly knocking it in fire mode with my cocking technique....operator error!!!

This is a quality German rifle

My jaw dropped a bit yesterday morning...I had shot at a dangling coffee can on my back fence four times from my deck the day before...off hand, open sights. Looked at the can....dead center and within a 2" group from over 25 yds. Yesterday....I took some shots further out....left the rifle for my uncle to play with...

Say Paul....are you reading this....???

This is exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title. Fortunately, a quick scan of the postings yielded no unfortunate fecal-related incidents.

Higgins as in "To Higgins" is considered a verb in our house.
