Oroville Dam

There's some amazing video of high voltage electricians dangling from helicopters flitting from transmission tower to transmission tower disconnecting equipment in case the emergency spillway gives out.

There's other video of a lone guy manipulating the nozzle of a cement pumper gluing thousands of tons of granite boulders together on one side of the reservoir near the dam itself.

The emergency spillway has split in two and is threatened by undermining at the bifurcation.

I've been watching too. Amazing to see the lake go from record low level, to for the first time in its history, spilling over the emergency spillway in just a few months*.

I wonder if the Department of Water Resources knows they sound like idiots that don't know what they are talking about when they constantly go on TV, proclaim something, then the exact opposite happens.

First, they said they had to re-open the spillway due to inflows rising (understandable) but the damage wouldn't get worse..it did, way worse. Then they said they would be able to control the levels using the existing spillway and wouldn't need the emergency spillway...they couldn't and they did. Now they are saying everything is still fine and no danger of flooding...here's to hoping.

I get that this isn't an exact science and they weren't prepared for it, but when you're wrong all along the way, telling people there is no danger of flooding doesn't give anyone a warm and fuzzy feeling. At least it's sunny for a couple days (though rain is on the horizon again)

Most people (including me) lack the capacity to completely appreciate and plan for the destructive power of flowing water.

It sounds like they didn't open the spillway to its maximum capacity. It's unclear if it is even capable of opening that far anymore.

And right on queue, they just issued evacuations for low level areas of Oroville. They think the emergency spillway is going to fail within an hour. Yikes!

They don't just sound like idiots. I have been watching these jokers for my entire life, they seem to have a proclivity for poor decisions.

Don't think it flooded yet, but I heard that 50 and 80 got closed by mudslides, 50 may still be out. Have not heard anything about Oroville Dam is gone yet. It has caused some big problems at the fish hatcheries on that watershed.

Supposed to dry out for a few days of top down weather, them back to rain at the end of next week.

Yep, 50 has been closed since 3pm Friday, my parents headed to Tahoe and had to take 88. 80 was closed Friday night but opened yesterday morning. Mudslides are bad up there.

... A Flash Flood Warning for a dam failure remains in effect until
415 PM PST Monday for south Central Butte County... at 441 PM PST

* Flash Flood Warning for... a dam failure in... south Central Butte
County in northern California...

* until 415 PM PST Monday

* at 445 PM PST, officials now anticipate a failure of the
auxiliary spillway in 60 minutes. Residents of Oroville should
evacuate in a northward direction such as towards Chico.

Other city's should follow the orders of their local law
enforcement. Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe
erosion that has lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the
auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release
of flood waters from Lake Oroville.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville areas
downstream is ordered. From Oroville to Gridley... low level areas
around the feather river will experience Rapid River rises.

This is not a drill. This is not a drill. Repeat this is not a
drill.

My parents are coming from Yuba City to our house in Grass Valley, they're stuck in grid lock right now.

It's been what, 7 or 8 years of drought. Now the drought busting rains come and a center piece of the states water system is not ready.

Wow, sure hoping the best for those down stream.

They are talking about draining the lake. Is that to a point just below the spillway, or do they have to dump the whole lake to do the repairs?

Cheers Richard

Hate When something interesting happens on a Sunday. My 24 hour all news channels have judge Jeneane, Anthony Bourdain and some marathon of creepy prison documentaries.

Various watchdog groups tried to get emergency spillway lined with concrete, state and federal agencies and water utilities refused. That spillway is a big earthern ditch with just a concrete lip.
