Amazon order-super fast delivery. How the heck???

Wifey ordered a uniform for our son yesterday afternoon. It arrived an hour ago so it was less than 24 hours. How the heck do they fulfill orders so fast? Not delivered by FedEx or UPS, more like a local firm? Amazon's eating Target and Walmart's lunch. Buffet sold Walmart stock recently. He must be thinking the same thing, right?

The number one rule is the less you care about when it gets delivered the faster it get there. If you really need it it will take twice normal. I don't know how they know.

I have bought stuff on Amazon that I would never have thought of to get online just a few years ago. I am a prime member and love it.

Prime member here also...when buying online, the first place I look is Amazon. They always exceed my expectations.
I ordered a Ryobi hammerdrill today...less money than the big stores here, and they will deliver it on Sunday.

I needed batteries for my Nest Protect, arrived the next day. Why would I drive to Radio Shack 3 miles away to see if they had them?

I remember a fairly recent article in which Amazon was experimenting with algorithms which predicted what potential buyers would order. Based on this, Amazon would pre- deliver these items to locations closer to the intended potential buyer before they had actually bought the item. I wonder how this idea is working out, or if it is being used successfully.

I have noticed a number of 18 wheeler trailers (in amazon prime "livery")hauling up and down I-81 in Va. This is something fairly new.

Not Amazon but I have ordered a set of tires from TireRack on Thursday afternoon and received them the next day.
They shipped from Louisanna, I'm in Tennessee.
Still scratching my head...

I order from amazon all the time. Often cheaper than local stores.

They're contracted with ontrac in the South West. Same people tirerack uses. They get paid on volume to deliver, and most of those guys use a pov to deliver in. That stuff moves.

There is probably an Amazon distribution center closer to you than you think.

We have been heavy Amazon Prime users for years.

2 day delivery used to be the norm. Lately it is more like 3-4 days. Amazon just built a distribution center 20 miles from my door, so we'll see if service improves.

With the recent state sales tax addition to my orders, I have been using E-Bay more often than the big A.

My son lives in-town Atlanta. He can order a tube of toothpaste off Amazon and it will be on his front door stoop within 2 hrs.

It's more than just price.....For instance:
If I need a belt for my riding mower; it's 22 miles one way to the JD dealer.....44 miles round trip to order. 44 miles a week later to pickup. Pay 8.1% sales tax............OR

Ebay for cheaper, no sales tax and at my door in a few days..........No brainer.

I'm super happy with the dandruff shampoo and conditioner I got on Amazon.

I'm a prime member.

One evening my router died. That night I did some investigating on using my iPhone to look at routers. I found the one I wanted at a Micro Center in Chicago. I live on the north side of the city and planned to go to the store right after work the following day. The store is less than 10 miles from where I work. I get off at 5pm, it is going to take 40 minutes to get there, buy the router and spend another 40 minutes to return home. I'm looking at 7pm before I even open the box.

The next day, in the morning at work, I'm on the computer to reserve the router at Micro Center. I happened to click on Amazon and they had the same router. If I bought it before 9am, I would get the router before 6pm. I bought the router and saved the grief of driving to Micro Center.

I'm home and sure enough, the router is delivered at 6pm and I'm back on line by 7pm.

I don't know how this is done -

Look at where the nearest fulfillment center is, we have them all over. Now add in that in many big cities we are doing our own delivery too and it eats a lot easier to get stuff out same day!

And for you guys that mentioned not getting prime orders in 2 days... call customer service when that happens, prime orders being delivered in time is very important.

Here's a good read on the expansion into delivery.

They used very sophisticated algorithms to predict what people will order where and when... Inventory is spread out according to this... If they know that someone is likely going to order toothpaste in an area, they will ensure it is close.

Add to that extremely efficient large warehouses and lots of smaller micro-warehouses that are replenished frequently and you have their success recipe.

Much like google pretty much knows what you're about to search for...
