He shipped his car to Arkansas to get painted and it got damaged in the process. Crappy deal, I would be pissed too, but I probably would not shoot the piano player, so to speak.

All you have to do is watch one episode of "Shipping Wars" and that's all you need to know about uShip.

Gogar, **** off. I'm not here by choice.
Really?

You are going to need to sue them. It will be complicated by the fact that it involves more than one state.

I'm happy to apologize and I'm willing to admit that my type of humour (and PPOT humour) in general might not appeal to everyone who usually sticks in tech forum.

Especially someone who is mad because he just spent like $15k to paint his car and decided to use uShip to save about 2 hundred bucks.

Oops, I did it again. Sorry, Mick, and sorry about your car.

Hmmm, this thread is a bit spicy.

I had a real good experience the one time I used uShip. I had a sailboat transported from Seattle to SoCal. Everything went smoothly.

No afterburn, I didn't use Dudley. They were highly recommended by the surveyor I used for my boat purchase, but I couldn't make suitable arrangements with them. They couldn't line up a return trip load during the timeframe I was looking at for shipping my boat.

I have used U ship in the past with varied results. None horrible, but some not as great as others. It's a toss up. Now that I have a proper car collection I will never use them again.

I read that part, but without Paul Harvey we may not get to know the rest of the story.

Also, if you requested an enclosed, you should have waited for an enclosed.

I owned a transportation company, now retired.

USHIP IS NOT A TRANSPORTATION COMPANY in any normal fashion.

They are an Internet company that runs a website where people who know nothing about shipping can go to hook up with companies/thieves/losers/anyone with a truck even if it is borrowed or stolen/etc, who may or may not be in the trucking business or have proper insurance and licenses.

All the responsibility falls on you. They do not verify any credentials of any of their carriers. They are not responsible for ANYTHING related to your shipment.

Think of uship as the equivalent of a dating website. They are just for hooking you up, not responsible if the person you go out with is a criminal.

I have seen enough scams to know that it would be a thieves paradise. Set up a fraudulent account, pick up a desirable car, disappear. You just helped a thief load your car, then gave him a multi day head start.

Any carrier can be looked up here:

https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx

You can check insurance and operating authority if you have the DOT or MC number, which ANY legit carrier has on the side of their truck.

ALWAYS ask to see the operating authority and insurance. Call the home office listed on the above website to verify the driver is assigned to the load, NOT a number the driver gives you. ALWAYS take pictures of the driver, his drivers license, your car, and his truck. ALWAYS check that the insurance covers the type of item you are shipping, you would be surprised how many exclusions can be listed.

Sounds like you got off light. At least you got your car back...

U-Ship is how I got involved with Kurt Keiper... he shipped my Unimog to MT and that transaction was OK. He then sold myself and my father-in-law some equipment that didn't exist.

On the upside, he is doing 12.5 - 78 years in Camp Hill, Pa for Theft by Deception...

Despite all this U-Ship wont remove his profile... SUMMIT TRANSPORT LLC. - Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Get Quotes for Transport

I stopped using Uship years ago. Far too much double brokering where a freight broker simply books on Uship hoping they can post to another board and fill the load. The other issue is uninsured haulers. Think of that guy with a truck and trailer who now thinks he's a freight hauler. Ask for DOT numbers, MC number, proof of insurance and when you book, make sure you get a pickup and delivery time clearly stated. Once you have the DOT number use Safer Web to look into the company. I would never ship with anyone without having their insurance information on hand. From the shipping end you MUST have pictures before the item is loaded. On the receiving end you MUST have pictures of how the item was received. I have shipped millions of dollars of freight. You learn lessons and sometimes they aren't cheap lessons learned.

Yep, that stupid show "Shipping Wars" comes to mind.....I understand it is for TV veiwing entertainment, and some of it is made up for TV, but in real life, there are players out there that are just as un-qualified as most of them on that show, as said before "due diligence".

I've had good luck w U-ship but I've never used it to ship a pristine vehicle and never would without verifying all of the previous information here regarding the actual shipper who is transporting my vehicle.

Of course they are just a website that links carriers w loads. Anyone who can't figure that out was probably in for a rough life even before the internet came along. The shipping business is run by brokers, (the only efficient way to connect loads w carriers), and the whole thing sucks bad without U-ship. U-ship just adds another layer of unaccountably to the whole transaction.

I've used the site several times to ship vehicles from one part of the country to another and saved a small fortune compared to just calling a broker or shipper. I've also met some independent guys w PU trucks and trailers that I'd trust a hell of a lot more than some of the so-called professional car haulers I've read about here who fk people's cars up left and right, (like the OP's). Totally accountable and nice to work with

I just had a non-running car shipped from Seattle to my door in Los Angeles for $500 on an open carrier through U-ship. The price through any normal channel was nearly double and it wound up being hauled by a reputable transport company on modern equipment. A really nice rig, actually. I now of course have a connection w the dispatcher @ that transport company and will never need U-ship again for that run. They netted $417 or something on the job after U-ship and the broker took their chunk. Don't need them anymore.

I've also had a Mexican guy w a huge dually and car trailer haul a MC in the bed from MN. to my door in L.A. He had his entire family + dog in the cab and what looked like a retired NASCAR race car on the trailer. The bike was old and already scratched but he did loaded it up @ my cousin's house in Minneapolis and delivered it w zero damage. I put him through the ringer before I told him where it was, made him take a picture of his DL and truck including license plate AFTER asking him about each, everything matched up to his mouth. There are lots of ways to verify people if you use some logic.

Yeah, the OP screwed up big time. The warning signs were all there when he talked to the driver and he chose to ignore them. Sad story.
