First tomato
First tomato plant is out of the dirt. In about 4 weeks I can move this puppy outside. Then with a bit of luck, be eating some tomatoes by June.

Amazing what comes from a tiny sprout like that.
Nothing like a good home grown 'mater...Nothing! Nature's candy, really. Next to home grown, store bought 'mates taste like paper mache. My g/f won't eat store bought 'maters, but she loves any of the ones I grow. And her favorite sandwich has become our BLT.

Hell, we already have tomatoes growing! We've been picking off the buds because the plants are only a foot tall, but one snuck past us and we have a 1 inch tomato already!
Weather is messed up these days...

Cherry tomatoes are my favorite snack in the summer. Also grow mini cucumbers. Like a cold glass of water on a summer day. You have it right on the weather part. Around here, possibly the best winter ever. Snow fell 3 times, less than 3" total. Not terribly cold. We never get frost after April 15 so I like to be ready around then. |

Building a cage around my tomatoes and hot peppers this year to keep the squirrels from taking them!
Why do they take one bite and leave them to rot on the lawn?

You can buy plastic netting for that.
I hang my netting from my patio ceiling...making a big tent for my 'mater pots.

Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower starts under the lights. I had planted the seeds then left town for 4 days not expecting them to sprout so the lights were off. I returned to find the tomatoes already getting leggy.

Great! You guys are ahead of me. I just filled the seed cups with soil today. Soaked them with hot water - 85 degrees, perfect. Then got called away
![]() I did get the heaters on so they should still be warm in the AM.

I'm planting tomatoes and peppers now. I can't grow cruciferae in the summer without poisoning the heck out of them. The bugs just chew them up. I start cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower in late August and put them out in mid-September after the heavy bug season so I can grow them without poison.

I need to resurrect my fall garden. I tend to be a bit burned out by then. Also, I only have 5 raised beds so rotating to avoid root pests is a problem if I grow 2 crops of cruciferous veges a year.

Aphids are born pregnant.
Years ago I grew Broccoli and had good luck with accompanying plants that aphids abhor...can't remember, but... . https://encrypted.google.com/#q=plants+aphids+hate&*

I am not opposed to using a little sevin for bug control, if needed. Last year I did not but near the end of summer I probably should have.
