vehicles I've owned where I more than once thought 'I love this motor' include my '06 Tundra 4.7, '13 Suburban 5.3 (with the massive exception of eating oil which unfortunately dq's it but man was it quiet and smooth) and of course my dearly departed 2.4 911. I like Jeeps 4.0 straight six and had a Civic with v-tech yo! it was decent but couldn't hide its small size.
had an '82 rabbit that was a hoot to drive but the motor was not special. '17 tundra has crazy power but motor is just to noisy to be great IMO. test drove a new F150 with the 5.0 V8 and was impressed with it. our odyssey has a pretty strong V6 but i'm not sure i'd call it great. more than adequate but not great I guess.

Without looking it up I would have to say the Chevy small block is number one in production numbers. Same basic design from the 50s to today.
There has never been a top 10 list that everyone agrees with. Never will be.

As far as lists go, this is one of the better ones.
I found the Duesenberg selection to be a bit obscure though, guess it's not a popularity contest.

Good list, but yeah how to discern "great" = Most reliable? Most HP to CU? Most historical? Highest HP? Highest number produced? Best technology?

The list is a mix of "last of their kind" and "first of their kind" yet somehow it works.

Long lasting alone would make for a separate list. The mopar slant 6 would be at the top of my list in that regard.

I'm not at all surprised that the Honda engine is on the list...have the same in my Prelude.
" It also tingled the brains of anyone who revved one of these motors out past 8,000 rpm. Nothing quite sounds like a Honda B at full tilt."

Oh yeah, the 6BT Cummins is one durable and over built motor. The 350 is also a pretty robust platform. I can't speak for the rest but those two, I have had and would buy again.

Long lasting would be the VW ALH 1.9l turbo-diesel 1999-2004.
I think the 3.0 Yamaha SHO engine was pretty darn good...

I'm also pleased they mentioned the Honder B-series. I think even Carroll Shelby praised it at one time.

I had to look it up. Over 100,000,000 small block engines have been made as of 2011. So a few more to that 100 million total.

Not sexy, but the Ford 300ci inline 6 used in their trucks was a great engine.

Never one issue with those 300 6's. Just regular service.

Had a flathead 110 hp in a '29 Ford town sedan. I could not believe how smooth it was.
I'd start it up, let it idle, and we all would stand there and marvel.

ALFA 2.5L V6
ALFA 2.65L V8 ALFA 1.3,1.6,1.75, &2L 4's The all Aluminum 4's are bullet proof! I see these copied 4's in many cars, look prettier because of modern machinery, but the same. Alfa's been building HEMI Motors way before Chrysler even though of coping it.

Would I discreate this thread if I mentioned the 5.0 HO Jeep six?
On the NAXJA forum it was not uncommon to hear of 250,000 mile histories.
