No Cereal...That's funny. Cereal was invented to replace meats for breakfast for health reasons.

1. Genetic insulin resistance. This is unmodifiable except some medications and varies from very mild to extreme.
2. Pancreatic reserve. Starting capacity for insulin production determined essentially at birth but declines with age and likely affected by certain preventable factors.
3. Glycemic load.
4. Acquired insulin resistance. This is how much body fat you acquire and your exercise status. Even seemingly trivial amounts of excess body fat (as little as 1-2 pounds of intra-abdominal or visceral fat in the extremely genetically sensitive) can trigger diabetes. Certain medication may contribute as well such as steroids (glucocorticoids) and statins.
If you become diabetic requiring medication, then the chance of normalizing your metabolism is dependent on whether you are capable of getting your combined insulin resistance low enough that your residual pancreatic function is sufficient for your glycemic load. That can mean only modest changes if you still have a large pancreatic reserve and milder genetic predisposition or extreme changes if you have worse genetics or pancreatic reserve or any combination.
Most Americans that I see with diabetes have relatively mild genetic predisposition but have very poor diet and exercise habits with substantial obesity. I would estimate that at least 80% could get off of all medications even insulin if they tried but less than 1-2% ever succeed for any meaningful period of time.
Really, really good and interesting post, Steve.

I wonder if science has proven that cereal lowers testosterone compared to bacon and eggs.

It’s very interesting to know that Dr Kellogg, one of the main instigators of these breakfasts cereals, was quite motivated as a religious man to lower male libido and control the hormones at play- thus decreasing testosterone. Lowering a man’s testosterone via your sneaky breakfast cereals- Not cool!.................

The worst thing you can do here is be scared of fat. As men we want to do achieve one of three things with our bodies; get shredded, get muscular or become an all-round healthy athlete. Either way fat is your friend. What we do is simply alter the amounts according to which category above you fall into.

The Man Breakfast

Testosterone is produced in the body by cholesterol, which is derived fat. In a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, men ate more than 100 grams of fat per day for two weeks. The results: They had less of a hormone that binds to testosterone, called sex-hormone-binding globulin. As a result, they had higher levels of free testosterone—the only form of T that’s ready to work on your tissue.

Some good fat sources? Nuts, meat, and eggs. Nuts are high in testosterone-elevating omega-3 fatty acids. And since testosterone is synthesized from cholesterol, eggs—yolks and all—are a great breakfast option. (Sick of scrambled? Try one of these Easy Egg Recipes.)
I can only speak for myself, when I ran out of granola and cereal and switched to bacon and eggs (and salmon and eggs) I had noticeable improvement in my physique (several people Complimented me on the changes). It was a bigger game changer than discovering deadlifts as a core exercise, and that was a big one for me.

I've been told that you need a small amount of carbs to process protein.

Last year my breakfast carbs were a single corn tortilla in conjunction with an egg and smoked salmon.

I've switched to oatmeal (workout carbs - energy) with berries (fruit serving) and a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter (protein).

I sort of bounce between these two types of breakfast but I suspect the oatmeal based one is better for me.

Bruce, it does become more difficult as you age. Something to also consider:

As you age, 'normal' blood glucose levels are higher. What is normal for a 20 year old might not be attainable for a 70 year old.

i have done it too.
problem is sticking with it.

me and my wife went to a doc for diet that cuts out all carbs and limits you to 900 calories.
also took phentermine.
we both lost weight.

I had already stopped taking janumet because I think it was effecting my dizzy spells.
it took a while but my A1C came down along with my blood sugar.

I am eating some carbs now, probably more than I should but I still limit them.

you can do it. it just takes time for the results to show.
my blood sugar (BS) would be hi in the mornings but low during the day.
like I said, A1C came down and doc said keep doing what I am doing.

^^ This! Get lean and mean, leave sugar and most carbs behind, start walking everywhere. There are many positive side effects to getting down to your fighting weight besides weening off medications. Couches kill.

Reversing type 2 diabetes with diet?

I just started reading through this book. Interesting info so far. Also addresses diet changes and exercise.

Found out about the book from an AOPA publication. An article about pilots medicals and prescribed meds.

i work with a big guy that has diabetes.
his BS is in the 200's.
he has seen it work for me but he says it did not work for him. probably because he only did it for a few days.
it takes time and determination.
I am not sticking to it like I was.
I love my Chinese food.
I have had pizza once this year.
