Would anyone expect less from the thugs of Chicago?
On a somewhat related matter, have fun dealing with United - ORD and loss of luggage. THAT is a comedy. Even more bizarre when they use contract Russian delivery services, whom show up days later to deliver your lost luggage, no signature required. The volume of inside organized crime working the cargo is legendary. Once in awhile is bad enough to make the late night TV news. |
Consumer resistance.
An organised boycott sounds like a fair and reasonable retaliation. Teach them and the other airlines a lesson or two in public relations. |

I keep wondering about the mentality of United, or lack thereof. So $800 is the most they will offer to a passenger to give up the seat with no fight. Now United has some pretty funny memes filling the social media channels. I love the fight club seating section, that is funny. How many MILLIONS will this cost them in bad publicity and lost customers?
Every single one of those passengers had a price they would accept to go an a different flight. So $800 is not it. How many volunteers would they get for 2 grand per seat? How about 5 grand. It would be a lot cheaper than all the TV stations covering it in the news and the delay at the gate they experienced. I have zero sympathy for United. It was all brought on by themselves. |

US airlines bumped some 40,000 odd people last year....and this is the only one that made the news. You have to applaud the guy for standing up for himself. But you also have to note that nobody on that airplane stood up for him. |

Logically if they had offered adequate compensation we'd have nothing to discuss here. If the reports are true, he's a Dr who felt he had to get back to his patients, there may in fact have been no adequate, for him, number. Not everything has a price, ethics are one of them. |
I'm flying to South Korea at the end of the month. I'm not sure who I should be more worried about: the nut job from North Korea or United staff!
BTW, they keep calling the flight overbooked. It was apparently not overbooked, United wanted their flight crew to board a fully booked, not overbooked, plane. Vin |

I've done it for convenience. I can book flights NJ to FL 1 way under $50. Sometimes I book back-up tickets, so I don't show, especially on the way home, if I want to stay a few more days and can pick up a cheap flight home. They likely overbook because some software predicts the % of no-shows and changed plans. If they can sell 10 extra seats, it's worth it even if they have to pass out a few vouchers. Airline tickets are cheaper now than in the '70s. With the competition and internet comparison shopping, they need to do anything they can to keep prices low. Charter an extra flight? I imagine pulling a plane last minute, for a few passengers, would be prohibitive. Years ago they used to put you on a competitor with the same destination, but doesn't seem to happen anymore. Frankly, I would have jumped at the $800, rented a car and driven the 4 hours. |

Southwest should use that for real! :D |
There was a story on NPR this morning about this and they were saying that China is all pissed off because the guy was Chinese and that's why they picked him to be thrown off.

You can rationalize the percentages all you want. Offer and acceptance. That was the dude's seat and United owes him. |
