I was planning on buying a new Toyota, until..
1). I've driven an Opel which shut the engine off at speed, and thus I suddenly lost all power steering on a curve.
2). I've driven a Prius which hard-braked the outside wheels on a roundabout, and almost pulled the car into the armco. 3). I've had women grab my driving arm with both hands while driving narrow switchbacks in the California mountains. 4). I've had women suddenly shout "STOP!" into my ear top of her lungs while making a fast pass and lane change. This was after she just desperately instructed me to make the same turn happen. 5). I've had women point left "No that way", while I was turning right. Their fingernail scratching my cheek or nose while barely missing my eyeball because I ignored the hand of female dominance. That has happened more than once. (and in case you were wondering: in #3-#5 I was only keeping up with normal traffic at the speed limit with traffic behind me.) The moral of this story is: Keep your filthy hands off my car controls you damn dirty apes. Now guess what is mandatory on all Toyota 2017 models: Toyota Safety Sense it prompts the driver to take evasive action and brake, by using an audio and visual alert. the system may provide additional braking force using Brake Assist. the system may automatically apply the brakes (Blinding the driver while parking him square on the train tracks or in the middle of a busy intersection. Something big and fast comes by and smears him/her/them/all into red jelly stain on the concrete. Genius. Sure. No sir, that is not a now-pending major class action lawsuit just waiting to be filed against Toyota Corp when something bad happens next, no sir.) the system may provide small corrective steering inputs to the steering wheel (Forcing the driver to run over that massive A-arm-snapping pothole in the middle of the road.) then automatically switches between high and low beams as appropriate (Blinding him when it's foggy out, and removing all control of your own headlights at night. More genius.) this system adds a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode which assists the driver by adjusting vehicle speed the system is designed to automatically decelerate your vehicle without having to cancel the cruise control. the system may apply the brakes, may alert the driver by using an audio and visual alert, and may operate your vehicle brake lights. (Defensive driving can sometimes be to claim your lane and hold onto it. This prevents a group of knuckleheads from swerve driving all over the place or suddenly cutting you off and brake checking you. You claim your space and they leave you alone. Checkmating them three moves in advance and prevented a problem.) Last edited by john70t; 04-09-2017 at 12:22 PM.. |

Soon to be Federally mandated on all vehicles. Like tire pressure monitoring systems, etc

We have a 2017 Toyota Sienna. Does not have Toyota Safety Sense. Your outrage may be misplaced. Where did you get your information?

Eh, we have a Subaru with Eyesight, I kind of like it. Can set the cruise control for 80 in traffic, and it maintains following distance.
It does nothing if you drive normally, other than beeps when I cross a line w/o turn signals.

This cannot be mandatory, no way.
It is an option maybe. When reading the feature-description for for example the Yaris, those are very helpful. And with Audio alerts those might be a beep or so, nothing more. |

Perhaps "all new cars" was hasty. On some 2016 models it was an option as it should be.
Here are those under the current program: 2017 PRIUS PRIME 2017 HIGHLANDER 2017 HIGHLANDER HYBRID 2017 YARIS 2017 RAV4 2017 RAV4 HYBRID 2017 COROLLA iM 2017 COROLLA 2016/2017 LAND CRUISER 2016/2017 PRIUS 2016 RAV4 2016 RAV4 HYBRID 2016/2017 PRIUS c 2016/2017 AVALON 2016/2017 AVALON HYBRID When you go up in an airplane is 50% reliability good enough? How about 96%? When you pick up a tool, you expect it to work safely every single time. Right? People become dependent and lax.......and they eventually let down their guard. Toyota explains the basis of their responsibility here: http://www.toyota.com/content/ebrochure/TSS_CFA_Final.pdf "As there is a limit to the degree of recognition accuracy and control performance that this system can provide, do not overly rely on this system. This system will not prevent collisions or lessen collision damage or injury in every situation. Do not use PCS instead of normal braking operations under any circumstances. Do not attempt to test the operation of the pre-collision system yourself, as the system may not operate or engage, possibly leading to an accident. In some situations such as when driving in inclement weather (heavy rain, fog, snow, sandstorm, etc.) or while driving on a curve and for a few seconds after driving on a curve, a preceding vehicle may not be detected by the laser and camera sensors, preventing the system from operating properly." I occasionally drive a 2017 Toyota Camry (1 of 4 company cars) that has the "LDW" signal on the dash, a loud beeping sound, and a vibrating steering wheel. I had to come back to the office to research what that meant LDW stands for "Lane Departure Warning", and must have been in error mode, because, that car did that whole scenario about 30-40 times driving straight down the road not getting near the edge lines. Don't forget the rear view camera, that flashes on the dash, when turning your right turn signal on....talk about distraction at the most inopportune time.

My wife's Nissan Quest only has the blind spot warning, and it's just a little light. That's not bad. The rest of this crap, no thanks.
Ever try driving in the snow with a car that has aggressive traction control? It cuts power if it detects any wheel slip, which sounds good until you hit a patch of slush while turning left across an intersection with oncoming traffic bearing down on you.

Our 2017 has the lane assist and it makes a growling noise if you get close to a lane stripe without using blinkers. It also has the blind spot warning and cameras front and rear to aid in parking.
Mercedes has had a brake assist for over a decade. If it senses you are closing in on an obstacle and you are not at full braking it will add braking. Mercedes did a lot of testing and the majority of drivers were not applying full brakes in an emergency situation. I bet lane assist is going to be mandatory soon. I see the average driver wandering all over the road and most are texting. I figure they need a feature that if the lane departure warning goes off more that a few times per minute the driver should get a ticket in the mail for inattentive driving.

So the women's line is affected. not so bad for now. I did see the 2018 Tundra will have adaptive cruise control and a couple other 'safety' features. no thanks!

Except the mandatory ABS and traction control and tire pressure monitors. Drive an old school pickup with a limited slip rear end in the rain. You will quickly realize how different a modern pickup really is.

When in a car with abs is it better (stops in shorter distance) to attempt threshold braking or just push down hard and let the lectronics do what it/they can? After many AX runs in my 89 - at this point I think my reaction will be to attempt threshold braking no matter what car I'm in.

ABS is faster and better than you are. Just stand on the brakes and steer as needed.
