Making your own healthy bread?
Just got back from the doctor's and I have to go on cholesterol pills(10 mgs of Crestor) for the first time in my life.
Who makes their own bread? And if so is there a recommended bread making machine that is effective? Meaning that if you make whole wheat bread does the bread rise? My experience with my old bread machine was that whole wheat loaf did not rise as it should but white bread did. I need whole grain for the fibre and health.... I love bread but suspect the store bought has too much butter, sugar, preservatives in it. Your thoughts are always appreciated! ![]() |

My g/f has become sensitive to breads and carbs, etc.
She buys Ezekiel bread now. There's also Spelt bread out there. I know, you want a machine...I'm just bored and want to type. . Sprouted Grain Bread | Ezekiel Bread | Sprouted Bread

My cholesterol sat around 235-240. I cut out the sugar and started getting a lot more fiber (beans, hummus, oat meal, oat bran, avocado, etc...) and lost 15 #. My cholesterol dropped to 165.

Yes, my cholesterol is high now...I've lost 6 lbs. in April so far.
I'm 190 and my fighting wt. is way down near 160. I'm dedicated to get there. Cholesterol and diabetes are my foes at this wt. Best of good fortune for all.

All you need for a bread machine to make good health bread is a mixer with a dough hook. Will do much better just using it and pans in the oven than those bread machines.
In order to make healthier bread my SIL got a mill and mills her own grains. Her only real tip is to not bake too much at a time. When you get rid of all the chemicals and preservatives in flours, etc. it don't keep very long before things start growing.

You can give this a try:
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread Good, basic bread shouldn't have more than three or four ingredients (water, flour, salt) in it.

If you have high cholesterol it probably isn't the bread.
If you have high blood sugar it probably is the bread. I'm not a doctor nor have I stayed at a holiday inn. ![]()

Research is beginning to show that your genetic makeup, not diet, is the primary driver of cholesterol levels. You can maybe move it 20 points via diet if you try real hard while statins can move the numbers significantly more. Throw statins AND exercise together and watch your numbers become a thing of beauty. That said, home baked bread is the best!

Buy some sourdough cultures here (I have the Austrian and San Fran) and use the "no knead" recipe above or one of the ones on this website. very good and easy to make.

The newer all grain flowers are better in terms of rising now. I think they are ground finer, probably. Start with 50:50 and work your way up trying different kinds. Also, in terms of diet, add fiber by eating a self mixed oatmeal (not the sugar bomb ready to eat crap) with flax seed added in the morning.
At my house my wife bakes bread 1-2 times a week. We use a 6 quart kitchenaid for kneading and do make square breads in bread loaf pans: Flower, yeast, water, salt. Freeze what we don't eat within 2 days. G |

Doc told me more oats. Changed to having Cherrios or Oatmeal for breakfast. Made my good numbers higher and my bad numbers lower. Made the numbers good enough got took off the pills. My Mom who was on Crestor for years started joining my breakfasts and got taken off her's as well. Maybe our family just had more horse genes.
I make whole wheat yeast rolls and freeze in little golf ball sized balls. Then I pull a couple out, let em rise covered, and cook em in my toaster oven. Ends up the size of burger buns. Usually always have a couple rising. Sure is nice to have bread fresh out of the oven. My favorite was eating at my Aunt and Uncles. They grew up and lived on a farm. Everything she cooked was with LARD. Including her absolutely melt in your mouth, delicious, fresh from the oven, white flour yeast rolls. Ohhh Man.

Start making your own bread and I bet you gain weight.
Any local Canucks that want a free bread machine you can have it as long as you pick it up.
