Knives are like sunglasses with me....the more I spend, the odds increase exponentially that I will immediately lose them in a lake or similar . Cheap....will stay with me a lifetime...

Nice collection btw...I have a $50 Kershaw on the way and a small Buck I've had forever...

Me too--over the years a bunch of people, I suspect, have been happy to find one of my knives in a parking lot or wherever else I have dropped them.

I'm putting a patina on my new Opinel with vinegar to protect it because I'll be using it at work. This is interesting.

I did put a heck of an edge on it.

and then while adding the patina, sliced a chunk of myself off. Hahahah. Fortunately, nothing that a bandaid won't fix.

Anybody know how to contact the producers of raw craft? I could give them a cue maker's name...a guy whose work is in the Smithsonian. Joel Hercek. I couldn't afford one of his cues, plus probably wouldn't live long enough to make it through his waiting list.

Chambriard Le Compagnon and Le Compact...now I have all 3 Thiers knives!

I decided to get all three of the similar design folders...the Compact in Olive wood and the Companion in Norwegian Birch.
You can see that Le Compagnon is just a bit shorter than Le Trappeur but is more delicately built with a thinner, less broad blade of Sandvik 13C26 stainless steel steel. There is no lock as these knives are slip joints with nail-nicks on the blades. The springs are very strong and one has to take care to close the blades cautiously even with the built-in half-stops.

I have to make a correction here regarding the steel used in the blades of these Chambriard knives. I said it was Sandvik 12C27 steel but in fact it is the even better steel from Sandvik 13C26 Stainless Steel. This was a special steel they developed for razors and knives, optimized to take a superior edge and retain that edge longer with little threat of corrosion. This explains to me why I have managed to put a frighteningly sharp edge on these knives with my Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener...I expected very good and got excellent! The surprise was not that the WEPS did so well, it always does, but that the steel did so well and so easily.

In my quest to see what these go for online, I found a couple of places that sell them. I've never been much for antler or similar type handle materials, but I guess they've grown on me. Some of the antler is cool, they also have horn, rams horn, and buffalo as well as a wide selection of woods of which the Amourette/snakewood is nice as well as some of the others.
