Maybe a nice screen of Bamboo :p

Maybe it's time to recycle an old mirrored closet door. Set it up in your driveway and adjust it so the light shines back into their windows. Maybe they'll get the hint.

Remember, OUTSIDE the box. Ya gotta make him really WANT to turn off that light.

I had a neighbor that did the same thing. Their "security" light felt like it was a minisun. I tried playing nice, no go. So I bought some 16 foot poles, some thin boards to go between them, and some reflective plastic roll. I set it up where it was in my yard a couple feet off the fence but set up in such a way that it almost completely reflects the light back to their house.
Worked great. He *****ed at me, I ignored him. He moved his light. I moved my reflector. He finally pointed the damned thing down at his own yard.

Parabolic mirror
mirror and reflectors

An aspheric mirror is, like the parabolic mirror, a concave mirror. The aspherical shape of the mirror allows an improved geometric-optical imaging.

The group of aspheric mirrors also includes paraboloids, hyperboloids and ellipsoids. These, as well as mirrors with a customer-specific aspherical surface, are among the specialties of asphericons product range.

High-quality materials meet innovative technology

Depending on the material used, both CNC technologies of grinding and polishing, as well as diamond turning, are used in the production of aspherical on- and off-axis mirrors as well as reflectors (see figures 1 and 2). The material is selected according to the customers needs, with the range covering almost all types of glass, as well as quartz, germanium, silicon, zerodur, infrared glass and calcium fluoride.

Thanks to optimized production technologies, high-end finishing such as asphericon ION-Finish TM and Magnetorheological Finishing-Technology® (MRF) as well as high-precision, full-surface and non-contact measurement asphericon manufactures aspheric and parabolic mirrors of the highest quality.

Depending on the requirements of our customers, accuracies of up to 50 nm global form deviation (irregularity) or 25 nm RMSi are achieved. The achievable roughnesses are, depending on the material and shape, up to 0.5 Rq. Learn more about our manufacturing capabilities.

Ill. 1 On-axis paraboloid for collimating a spot light source
Ill. 1: On-axis paraboloid for collimating a spot light source

Off-axis paraboloid for focusing a collimated beam
Ill. 2: Off-axis paraboloid for focusing a collimated beam

Typical applications for aspheric and parabolic mirrors

Just as diverse as the possibilities for coating aspherical mirrors are also their fields of application.

Besides being used in light sources, they are e.g. used for laser applications and in material processing. What’s more, aspheric mirrors are increasingly being employed in space and astronomy (e.g. reflector telescopes). They are used in the following areas:

Collimation of a spot light source
Telescopes
Fiber collimators
Laser applications
Material processing by lasers
Lighting

Especially for your needs – aspheric and parabolic mirrors from asphericon

Whether you are looking for components for telescopes or measuring technology, asphericon offers complex solutions and the highest precision from a single source. Starting with optical design and the production of your mirrors, asphericon also produce coated elements, such as dielectric mirrors for single wavelengths, two wavelengths and the entire bandwidth as well as metallic mirror coatings made from aluminum, gold and silver. Learn more about the details of asphericon coating, too.

Data sheet production capabilities

Besides parabolic mirrors, asphericon manufactures high-precision aspheres, axicons, aspheric cylinders as well as mounted optics and beam expanders.

Yup. But you were quicker to the draw .......

I had beautiful views of the night sky. Could lean back in the hot tub and see the Milky Way. Then my neighbor installed these damn Kleig lights around his garage. It's like he's scanning the darkness for enemy bombers.

Check out the international dark sky association web site: Lighting

They have a "My neighbors Lights" tab that has some good information.

RKDinOKC 05-22-2017 12:26 PM

When moved into this house there was a back yard outdoor security light from the city. It's just one of those orange street lights only it's in the corner of my back yard. It's not a glaring flood light, just an orange light on a pole like neighborhood street lights.

Right after moving in one of the neighbors came over and gave me enough to pay 1/2 a years worth of the the light bill. They wanted to make sure I didn't turn it off. They have been paying half the security light bill for 15 years.

Another neighbor complained it was shining in her bedroom window. Called the city and they put a shade on it so shines everywhere except her property. It goes right up to the top of my stockade fence then is shaded. About a month later that same neighbor asked to have the shade taken off. Decided her back yard was too dark without the light and also gives me 1/2 the light bill.

There are two other newer neighbors that complained the light shined in their bedroom windows as well. Got em shaded and they changed their minds as well, but sadly no more money.

I had one on each side of my backyard, neighbor next door pays for the one and I guess the PO of my house payed for the other.

I called power company and asked for mine to be turned off, I like it dark at night. They told me there was no light on the pole, I thanked them, and hung up.

Went out back with a BB Gun and shot it out.

The other one (neighbors) was next to my bedroom window, I kindly requested he to ask for a shade or something to stop lighting up my backyard. She never got off her lazy ass to request a thing.

Fast forward about 3 years my tree was growing into the light and blocking my backyard, I am now happy. Fast forward 3 more year, it is now blocking the light in her yard too. She asked me to trim the tree.

I will let you guess if I did.

I like sammy's bargain mirror solution. Careful with parabolic mirrors though, might set someone's house on fire if the sun is wrong, or right I guess.

Hey everyone....again I appreciate the suggestions and humor. Good stuff!

The thing is.....I truly do not want to escalate the situation. It has nothing to do with being worried about what the neighbor would do. It has to do with my desire to take the high road. That said...I do have a plan. :D

Seems like putting up a security floodlight of my own....would be the least offensive move on my part and might actually help mitigate the blinding effect from the neighbor's light.

Fight fire with fire but in a way that doesn't seem extreme....such as the idea with the reflective material would have been.

So...if "we" are concerned with security...the more lighting we have...the better.

Right?

I picked this up today at HD. Only $99.

I also called my electrician friend who installed my neighbor's lights and he said the neighbor had bought them and they were about 100 watts. He agreed with me that the neighbor should aim them more downward.

Well.....at any rate....when I install mine - at least I will be able to see on my side of the street again.

Going to make sure my motion sensor will detect anything on their side of the street and for it to stay on for 1/2 hour.

Depending on things play out...I may get a second one for the other corner of my garage.

Let there be light!

Will keep everyone posted....

You say that like it's a bad thing ........ ;)

I have 4 500 watt lights pointed at my neighbors house.

I have a big back yard and put them up so my daughter could ride her horse at night if she wanted or the kids could play or just so we could see.
they are rarely on and I don't leave them on. in fact, cant remember last time I had them on.

we don't get along anyway, not because of the lights, so I really don't care.

he has one that points at my house.

its pretty hard to not have a light shine at someone else's house unless it points straight down, especially depending on the type of light.

you tried "please" and "thank you" already?

Yep, in my neck of the woods that light would be illegal.

Had the same problem with a neighbor whose security light essentially illuminated our bedroom at night. During the day, stopped by, nicely, presented the issue as something my wife was more upset about....and offered to adjust it for them, leaving it as high as possible, just not shining over the fence.

The wife took me up on the offer. Was there in 3 minutes with a ladder, adjusted the light for her, problem solved, no hard feelings.
