Maybe it's time to recycle an old mirrored closet door. Set it up in your driveway and adjust it so the light shines back into their windows. Maybe they'll get the hint.

I had beautiful views of the night sky. Could lean back in the hot tub and see the Milky Way. Then my neighbor installed these damn Kleig lights around his garage. It's like he's scanning the darkness for enemy bombers.

When moved into this house there was a back yard outdoor security light from the city. It's just one of those orange street lights only it's in the corner of my back yard. It's not a glaring flood light, just an orange light on a pole like neighborhood street lights.

Right after moving in one of the neighbors came over and gave me enough to pay 1/2 a years worth of the the light bill. They wanted to make sure I didn't turn it off. They have been paying half the security light bill for 15 years.

Another neighbor complained it was shining in her bedroom window. Called the city and they put a shade on it so shines everywhere except her property. It goes right up to the top of my stockade fence then is shaded. About a month later that same neighbor asked to have the shade taken off. Decided her back yard was too dark without the light and also gives me 1/2 the light bill.

There are two other newer neighbors that complained the light shined in their bedroom windows as well. Got em shaded and they changed their minds as well, but sadly no more money.

I like sammy's bargain mirror solution. Careful with parabolic mirrors though, might set someone's house on fire if the sun is wrong, or right I guess.

Hey everyone....again I appreciate the suggestions and humor. Good stuff!

The thing is.....I truly do not want to escalate the situation. It has nothing to do with being worried about what the neighbor would do. It has to do with my desire to take the high road. That said...I do have a plan. :D

Seems like putting up a security floodlight of my own....would be the least offensive move on my part and might actually help mitigate the blinding effect from the neighbor's light.

Fight fire with fire but in a way that doesn't seem extreme....such as the idea with the reflective material would have been.

So...if "we" are concerned with security...the more lighting we have...the better.

Right?

I also called my electrician friend who installed my neighbor's lights and he said the neighbor had bought them and they were about 100 watts. He agreed with me that the neighbor should aim them more downward.

Well.....at any rate....when I install mine - at least I will be able to see on my side of the street again.

Going to make sure my motion sensor will detect anything on their side of the street and for it to stay on for 1/2 hour.

Depending on things play out...I may get a second one for the other corner of my garage.

its pretty hard to not have a light shine at someone else's house unless it points straight down, especially depending on the type of light.

Yep, in my neck of the woods that light would be illegal.

Had the same problem with a neighbor whose security light essentially illuminated our bedroom at night. During the day, stopped by, nicely, presented the issue as something my wife was more upset about....and offered to adjust it for them, leaving it as high as possible, just not shining over the fence.

The wife took me up on the offer. Was there in 3 minutes with a ladder, adjusted the light for her, problem solved, no hard feelings.
