not true.

It might work if you only run into North American species, but if somebody misplaces his exotic snake,
and you walk up to it thinking it's non venomous because it does not have elliptical eyes.. you'll be in for quite the surprise.

The most venomous ones all have round pupils, or full black eyes.

Good thing there are no Cobras on this continent.

Besides, no one would really confuse a cobra with anything but.

You're gonna know what you're looking at way before you stare deeply and lovingly into it's eyes.

There is also an exception in the US, the Red Coral Snake.

But it's range is generally restricted to the Gulf Coast and inland from there.

Not really areas we are too concerned about other than maybe New Orleans.

And with that one, the rhyme applies, If Red touches Yellow....

EDIT: Since you added while I was replying.

I don't think the general population is too concerned with someones pet exotic snake getting lose.

You're 10 x's more likely to win the lottery than encounter that situation.

Sure, but somebody can take that statement of yours out of context and apply it where it does not apply.

So best to frame it to make clear that the simplified rule only works for common North American species

Wait, you mean the USA is not the only place that matters on earth?

Well I typed it in American so assumed only Americans could read it.

Keep forgetting they have the google translate now.

There was a Cobra loose in Houston not long ago. Not typical, but with global warming and the Russians and all...
