Yeah, I thought of doing the same thing you did by buying one of those things to convert pics, slides, etc. In the end I just took my hundreds of old 35mm slides to Costco. I think at the time it was $17 for a DVD and something like 13 cents each. That way I got good quality, it cost a fraction of a cheap, low quality converter, and I wasn't stuck with something I would want to get rid of later on. Problem(s) solved.

For the slides, you've got to have a bunch of time on your hands. My mom did ours slides and snapshots after my dad passed. It was almost 2800 photos. I think it took months with her chipping away at it a little bit here and there.

Send them out.
99% of people who balk at the cost and insist they can do it give up before getting 1/3rd through. Mind numbingly tedious.

As far as photos, you can take a picture of them with your phone and then D/L to your computer in short time also.

I used a service a couple of times for some old slides that my Dad took in the early '60s. It was cheap and some of the best money I ever spent.

I mailed them to ScanCafe back in 2010. I'm sure there are other competitors...

Kodak selld a photoshop filter that fixes the discoloration in those slide scans. Does an amazing job.

If you were closer I would do the VCR/DVD conversion for the cost of the blank DVD and ink for you.

We've got a "Jumbl" for quick and dirty. For better quality take to a professional scanning service. There are lots of them, probably one in your town. Once digitized Photoshop has lots of re-touching tools - even in the stripped down "Elements" version.
