Posting an ad saying you want to buy something is a far cry from committing to buying something. Calling you in answer to a wanted ad is a far cry from committing to selling something to you. This whole thread is ludicrous.

As this "situation" was laid out, the seller did nothing even remotely close to wrong unless he left a message saying the OP had X amount of time get back to him before he sold it.

Let's say there had been 5 wanted ads for a transponder. Some guy wakes up and sees the 5 ads and places calls to all 5 guys. Not a single one answers so he leaves them messages. The 4th guy he called calls back, they agree to a price, and the deal is done. Did the seller shaft guys 1, 2, and 3?

Dude- the buyer did the dick move, not the seller. It doesn't appear the seller knew he was dealing with anyone other the the OP. If he had, and sold it to the buyer, then I'd say he's a dick as well.

In your 5 wanted ad scenario, all were responded to so fair is fair- first come, first served. The OP was skated by the buyer. He poached the opportunity offered by the OP himself.

Sorry, I believe the OP is making the Dick move here for getting upset over timing and this is one of the reasons I never respond to WTB ads as a seller.
I let the buyers call me and sell to the first one with money.
Then these kind of things do not happen.

Not knowing more about the circumstances, I would say not a dick move. You are possibly just a victim of circumstance/timing.

I'm one of the moderators for our developments facebook classifieds page.

All those types of pages run on the same basic principal.

You post a WTB or for sale ad.

First one to respond with interest is first in line.

All subsequent interested parties are next in line based on the order of posting. The most common expression of interest for anyone other than the first is "next".

All interested parties, responders, are given at least 12 hours to engage the OP and arrange for the transaction because life.

If interested party does not respond the OP can move onto the next.

It's fair and prevents people turning it into ebay.

The guy who bought the part was able to because Unclebilly put out the feeler. Unclebilly created the opportunity and the buyer cut the line.

Your FB page must have some policy of some sort. But I don't think it's universal.

One other possibility is that the seller actually has a for sale ad somewhere else, you just didn't see it.

Unless the mods are masochists Garage Sale / Classifieds FB pages do have written / posted rules.

And they are typically consistent.

In my area there are a half dozen pages covering adjacent or overlapping towns.

The other consistent rule is if you post the same item on more than one of the pages you must clearly indicate the item is Cross Posted to avoid drama when someone claims an item on one page while it was claimed earlier on another.

The rules grew organically and are universally understood and generally adhered to (by non dicks) whether a page posts them or not.

Pages that don't follow "the established norm" make PARF look like a bible study group.

Reminds me of eBay postings which have disclaimers that the item is also listed locally and a local sale could be grounds to end the auction early.

Can't remember what implications are if there are bids on the item or if there is a reserve that has yet to be met....but I do like the idea of a disclaimer in order to minimize misunderstandings.
