PO asks what have you done to help the environment.
What have I done? I've gone solar for my electricity. All LED bulbs. Variable speed motor for the pool pump. Instantaneous water heater. Conserve water as much as possible, fast showers, collect rain water for the garden. Carpooling with my son whom I work with. Heck, my electricity usage is 2/3 what it used to be. That helps with $ The effects of one individual, almost meaningless in the big picture, but together a change can be made. One rain drop, no big deal. But they can gang up and cause a flood by working together. Am I a "greenie", heck no. But I do think we all have an obligation to each other to do whatever we can to help. Oh, I probably negate all the good by driving my 911.

Long term I think we're screwed. I remember the last time I went to the Grand Canyon, a place where the average Joe from every walk of life (and from all over the world) goes out of their way to soak in the natural beauty.
As I stood at one of the overlooks taking in the scene before me I looked down just past my feet and saw hundreds of cigarette butts littering the ground on the other side of the railing. Every overlook was the same. I realized far too few care about the planet (and do the right thing). The masses don't a give $hit.

Well, it looks like I've done my part. I've had 3 kids instead of 4. We only really fly for vacation once every other year. Maybe once a year at best. And next week we'll have 2 cars instead of 3.

Then and now..............
The earth has been experiencing climate changes for the entire recorded history. The human race survived then and it will survive now. Unless someone wants to shut down some entire countries and indulge in genocide at a whole new level, not much will change from anything humans can do. The best thing is to be sensible about consumption and don't be "greedy" over "stuff". And, before anyone jumps on his/her soapbox about "uneducated response", I have two engineering degrees and worked in various engineering fields for about 40 years. I'm not stupid, just realistic.

I am no "greenie" either, but try to do my part by recycling everything we use as far as glass/plastics/aluminum cans/steel cans/cardboard and paper. I want to start dabbling with passive, and active solar in the next few years, and when I retire, I am building a greenhouse to attempt growing our own food. Betwen the garden, and the meat chickens/rabbits we have, I will be saving alot of packaging on the grocery items we don't buy.
We also run the same car/appliances/furniture until they are generally worn out (not just out of style) because it takes alot of fossil fuel/money to produce new ones. |

Unfortunately, the possibility of this happening is uncomfortably close at hand. Now that computers and internet connectivity are being used to control power grids and water resources and will soon control transportation systems, all First-World countries will find themselves vulnerable to such an event. State-sponsored hackers have already been able to take down large portions of the power grid in the Ukraine for periods of time. Are they just practicing for some future cyber war?

I'm not concerned with people not throwing cigarette butts away, there is no "away". Until we shoot our trash out into space it just goes into someone elses backyard. Pol Pot had a great environmental plan by lowering carbon footprint of the living. . . and reducing that number substantially but I don't see many advocating for that.
But it doesn't really matter. When the next 20 mile wide comet hits the earth, all of this will be irrelevant. enjoy your weekend |
