I still watch it most every year although my last bicycle race was in 1985. I have some snowy VHS tapes of the first tour that Greg Lemond did, the great one that he won by 7 seconds with the "new and radical" aero handle bars. I have a great one of the Giro when Bernard H was winning and near the top of a mtn. stage the spectators were trying to make him fall. His support car pulled in front and opened both front doors and spectators went flying everywhere. There was a huge flail and he was going to get DQ'd but the French Gov't said they would sue Italy as they were not protecting the riders!!!! He won it. Also have a home made video of Greg Lemond as a junior rider lapping the Senior 1/2/Pro field then sitting at the back for about half the UCSD Criterium in 1984 (3?) race. The #2 place rider though he won......surprise!
Maybe someday I can get them converted to digital and put on YouTube? |

Most days there are 4 different time slots to view that day's stage. First viewing is "live"...last one in the evening is the "extended" coverage. I usually watch the evening "extended" stage, unless there's something going on that day that I don't want to wait for....every year there's some kind of excitement and intrigue.... ![]() The team of commentators and analysts for this event are unsurpassed....Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin and I get a real kick out of Bob "Bobke" Role as well. And Jens Voight doing sideline reporting....great stuff! ![]()

Last couple off years I have really grown to appreciate and respect Peter Sagan....will be pulling for him this year to compete in stage finishes and green jersey, although he wears the rainbow jersey (current world champion) for the second year in a row....

As for what Lance did, terrible as it was, I have to admire the way he and his doctor(s) managed to get around all the tests, samples, watching him all the time, ETC, ETC as he was the most tested and monitored cyclist in history?!

my last race was in early 2000's.
I still have my US postal bike even though it is 2 pieces and hanging on the wall. not for drugging and not to start a lance topic, but when everyone is doping....... what gets me is they take lances wins away but they still keep pantani's record time up alp duez and he had to drop out the day after, I am sure to get from getting busted. got to do some rides with George hincappie back in the day.

It seems lance bullying other riders on the issue and claiming to be holier than thou as well as too big to fail helped stoke the fires against him. Watching the documentary on him leaves one with zero pity for his plight. I do understand the 'were all doing it' concept but lance appears to have taken it beyond that.

My joke wasn't fully written out. I retired from one career last June and started another in the fall.
Last summer in between remodeling the basement, I gorged on the Tour, Wimbledon, The Open, and wherever else was going on. Good times! Hope to see Cavendish, Sagan, and the other sprinters duke it out. That and the major mountain stages do it for me. Thanks for the schedule. Makes it easier! |

Cav is a shadow, too bad, but chronic fatigue is a beyooch.
Sagan is great entertainment. Sky? Good lord, they're dominant. They've discovered microdosing Lsd or something, and will humiliate the bunch yet again. The race beneath them will remain interesting.

Maybe showing stages from the start will allow me to catch a glimpse of the elusive Concrete Dog. I'm referring to Carlos Betancur.

I just looked at Greg's cycling history and the races in San Diego are not mentioned and just might be as early as 1980/1/2 or that time frame. I have some pictures of my daughter and myself at that race and one was with me at the start beside John Howard, at the time the world speed record holder. I finished 5th in the veteran's criterium that year and I'll have to dig out my photo albums to see what they say?
