Lightbulb Le Tour 2017

That time of year again folks......3 days to go.....

Tour de France 2017

Can Froome win his 4th title?

The route

Running from Saturday July 1st to Sunday July 23rd 2017, the 104th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,540 kilometres.

- 9 flat stages
- 5 hilly stages
- 5 mountain stages including altitude finishes (La Planche des Belles Filles, Peyragudes, Izoard)
- 2 individual time-trials stages
- 2 rest days

The 2017 Tour de France will include a total of 23 mountains climbs or hills and altitude finishes ranked in second, first or HC class.

The geographic distribution will be as follow:

- 1 in the Vosges
- 6 in the Jura
- 8 in the Pyrénées
- 2 in the Massif central
- 6 in the Alps

Distinctive aspects of the race

HEXAGON + 3
The 104th Tour de France will visit three neighboring countries: Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg. In France, 34 counties will be visited.

25 YEARS AFTER...
It hadn’t happened since 1992. The five main mountain ranges of France will be on the program in 2017. The Tour will visit, in the following order, the Vosges, the Jura, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central and the Alps. The highlight will be the very first stage finish at the top of the Col d’Izoard.

OPENING AND (ALMOST) FINISH IN SOLO
It’ll be after a 14-kilometre time-trial in the streets of Düsseldorf that the first Yellow Jersey of the 2017 Tour de France will be awarded. In Marseille, after the 20th and penultimate stage, a 22.5 kilometre time-trial, the winner of the 104th edition of the Grande Boucle will be crowned.

BONUSES
Re-introduced in 2015 after a seven-year absence, bonus seconds will again be up for grabs at the finishes of all the normal stages. There will indeed be 10, 6 and 4 seconds to be gained for the first three of each stage.

POINTS
The green jersey will be awarded to the leader of the points classification. These points will be given out at the finishes of each stage as well as on the unique intermediate sprints of normal stages.
The polka-dot jersey will be on the shoulders of the leader of the best climbers’ classification. Points will be awarded at the top of each Col or Côte and the three altitude finishes (La Planche des Belles Filles, Peyragudes, Izoard).

10 new sites and stage cities

šDüsseldorf (1st stage and start of stage 2)
Mondorf-les-Bains (start of stage 4)
šNuits-Saint-Georges (finish of stage 7)
Nantua (start of stage 9)
Eymet (start of stage 11)
šLaissac-Sévérac l’Église (start of stage 15)
Romans-sur-Isère (finish of stage 16)
La Mure (start of stage 17)
šIzoard (finish of stage 18)
Salon-de-Provence (finish of stage 19)

I still watch it most every year although my last bicycle race was in 1985. I have some snowy VHS tapes of the first tour that Greg Lemond did, the great one that he won by 7 seconds with the "new and radical" aero handle bars. I have a great one of the Giro when Bernard H was winning and near the top of a mtn. stage the spectators were trying to make him fall. His support car pulled in front and opened both front doors and spectators went flying everywhere. There was a huge flail and he was going to get DQ'd but the French Gov't said they would sue Italy as they were not protecting the riders!!!! He won it. Also have a home made video of Greg Lemond as a junior rider lapping the Senior 1/2/Pro field then sitting at the back for about half the UCSD Criterium in 1984 (3?) race. The #2 place rider though he won......surprise!

Maybe someday I can get them converted to digital and put on YouTube?

Matt...see the TV schedule I just posted (above).

Most days there are 4 different time slots to view that day's stage.

First viewing is "live"...last one in the evening is the "extended" coverage.

I usually watch the evening "extended" stage, unless there's something going on that day that I don't want to wait for....every year there's some kind of excitement and intrigue....

The team of commentators and analysts for this event are unsurpassed....Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin and I get a real kick out of Bob "Bobke" Role as well. And Jens Voight doing sideline reporting....great stuff!

Hang onto those tapes, John. I got a bunch too...mostly during Big Mig's domain. I've also taken pics with my digital camera of the TV screen during certain moments and have those all in a folder. A LOT of Lance - but man after what he did - I don't have the same enthusiasm for him as I once did. Not even close. It sucks...

Last couple off years I have really grown to appreciate and respect Peter Sagan....will be pulling for him this year to compete in stage finishes and green jersey, although he wears the rainbow jersey (current world champion) for the second year in a row....

As for what Lance did, terrible as it was, I have to admire the way he and his doctor(s) managed to get around all the tests, samples, watching him all the time, ETC, ETC as he was the most tested and monitored cyclist in history?!

my last race was in early 2000's.

I still have my US postal bike even though it is 2 pieces and hanging on the wall.

not for drugging and not to start a lance topic, but when everyone is doping.......

what gets me is they take lances wins away but they still keep pantani's record time up alp duez
and he had to drop out the day after, I am sure to get from getting busted.

got to do some rides with George hincappie back in the day.

It seems lance bullying other riders on the issue and claiming to be holier than thou as well as too big to fail helped stoke the fires against him. Watching the documentary on him leaves one with zero pity for his plight. I do understand the 'were all doing it' concept but lance appears to have taken it beyond that.

Last summer in between remodeling the basement, I gorged on the Tour, Wimbledon, The Open, and wherever else was going on. Good times!

Hope to see Cavendish, Sagan, and the other sprinters duke it out. That and the major mountain stages do it for me.

Thanks for the schedule. Makes it easier!

Cav is a shadow, too bad, but chronic fatigue is a beyooch.

Sagan is great entertainment.

Sky? Good lord, they're dominant. They've discovered microdosing Lsd or something, and will humiliate the bunch yet again. The race beneath them will remain interesting.

Hey John, I love to see that tape of LeMond lapping the 1,2, pros as a jr. someday. I was a USCF jr back in 84, and LeMond is older then I am, so that must an earlier race. LeMond, Armstrong, and other pro riders are such monsters. They are on another level. When riding the local races. I remember the French Olympic team riding the Manhattan Beach GP with our local boys in 84. One after another would tear off and just rode away from the field (of course there's a little blocking by their team mates) effortlessly.

I have not kept up with the Tour and only watch it when possible. With the schedule you posted, it will sure make it so much easier to stick around and watch it. Thanks

Maybe showing stages from the start will allow me to catch a glimpse of the elusive Concrete Dog. I'm referring to Carlos Betancur.

I just looked at Greg's cycling history and the races in San Diego are not mentioned and just might be as early as 1980/1/2 or that time frame. I have some pictures of my daughter and myself at that race and one was with me at the start beside John Howard, at the time the world speed record holder. I finished 5th in the veteran's criterium that year and I'll have to dig out my photo albums to see what they say?
