latest windows 10 update

just had this one pushed on me 21 july. Since then streaming video keeps crashing. If I uninstall the update will it revert to what I had or will I screw things up more?

No idea, all I know is woke my Surface up Thursday night, it did the update, ended up with a UEFI boot loop, had to reinstall the system.

Was NOT pleased.

Did you try your last restore point?

no not yet. That's part of my concern. Will "restore" work given the nature of this update? I'm not very good at this stuff.

Before Windows updates, it creates a "Restore Point" which is like a snapshot of it's state before the update. That way if you have a problem after the update, you can just go back to that restore point which should be from just before the update. That would be better than uninstalling which may not get everything.

It used to create them by default, that was my prior experience. Seems it's changed.

On a fresh install, actually 2 in the last 3 months, restore points were not automagically enabled, had to manually turn it on.

Best to take 10 seconds to check and make sure it's actually on.

Plug in an external hard drive or add a network share and do a full back up.

Should be doing that regardless but this was you have something to recover from.

I feel your pain. Since "the update" (Creators Update) a ton of useless and unwanted apps have appeared on my laptop. I don't know why MS keeps doing this bulls***. I basically have to go in and nuke them through PowerShell. You think someone would create a script to remove all this junk right after the update drops. Worst part is it's a work laptop, so it keeps installing these retarded games and 'fun' apps. How do we stop this madness?!?!

Paging @id10t and other IT professionals - have any recommendations?

The games Win 10 keeps trying to install is annoying. I have not played computer games since the 1980s. Just don't care about them.

Hmm.

I run Windows 10 in a Parallels VM over Mac OS. So deleting a misbehaving Windows 10 OS and reinstalling only takes 20 minutes. But it is still irritating. I'm thinking I won't do the Creators Update.

Probably a wise move to wait this one out a bit. Seems many people are having issues on this seemingly-rushed update. I let it install on my machines and it rendered a slightly older version of Photoshop completely useless (messed with the native fonts or some such, and blanked out all of the menu boxes/drop-downs). You can click the "Pause Updates" button under updates>advanced options, and defer "feature updates" for 1 year, and "quality updates" for 30 days, via the drop-downs for each (at least in Win10 Pro).

Well "Restore" isn't working for me. I disabled Malwarebytes for the 2nd attempt but still no joy. Netflix seems to be most impacted, streaming crashes frequently and requires rebooting. I checked for updates on the vid driver and have the most current.(error code H7121-1331-2205 fyi)

Any other ideas?

Not sure about you guys, but I didn't get the option to install it - I noticed my laptop was running slow when trying to do emails and saw it was auto-installing. Looks like whatever preferences I had for 'choosing' when to install updates are also gone. This is terribly annoying to OWN a piece of technology but have less control over it.

are you using firefox? i noticed streaming video crashing with firefox on my win10. Disable hardware acceleration in firefox settings and that 'fixes' it. Or switch to a different browser.

Good call, hardware acceleration in browsers is regularly problematic.

Don't get why it's shipped as enabled by default.

Used Chrome for a decade but recently moved to Opera full time on my Surface.

I like the some of built in privacy controls.

Been rock solid so far.

I use Opera to cut out ads.

Microdoft wants me to make some decision about Creator but I refuse to engage.

What exactly is Creator 10?

It's going after the millennial crowd.

Incorporates the Hand Off feature you'll find in OSX.

Adds 3d apps and content creation.

By content creation I mean the new paradigm in marketing / PR / evangelism.

There is a whole crop of what we refer to as influencer's.

In my industry, gaming, it's youtubers and twitch streamers.

These are essentially people who record or live stream themselves playing games with commentary and live interactive chat.

Think of them as movie / theater critics but as online content instead of print.

The successful ones will have 10's to 100's of thousands of followers so they are highly influential. They can make or break a game.

So yes, your parents were wrong, you can make a very lucrative living playing video games.

Hmmmmmmmm.

My parents were having issues with very old versions of Office recently. Maybe the update is creating issues. The problem stems from IPv6 vs. IPv4 DNS issues. Until recently, they had an old Wireless G WiFi router connected to the cable modem, which was limited to IPv4. When a Comcast/Xfinity rep installed a newer cable modem/phone/Wifi Router, he removed the old Wifi router and reprogrammed each wireless device to use the new wifi router. Office 2003 became DOA. When testing, the error was couldn't lookup the DNS of the mail server.

I thought the issue was the new router, but maybe it is this Windows 10 update.

Lots of odd WIFI issues with 10 for a bit now.

Cousins wifes laptop out of no where stops connecting to their FIOS router.

She brings it by and I manage to get it connected to mine. She had brought her router as well, same model and firmware as mine, I can connect all my devices, just not hers.

Connect her successfully to the other 3 routers I have running.

Sent her home with a spare ASUS router I had, been fine ever since.

I know a couple of other people who have had the same issue.

My Surface is doing this. On a fresh install reconnects to WIFI on wake, after a few weeks it will connect but can't reach a network. Need to manually disconnect and reconnect to get internet.

This has happened twice so far. Just had to do a reinstall last week and it's behaving, we'll see how long that lasts.

If you laptop connects to your wifi on wake, but does not access the internet, it is usually a DNS issue. When I had this issue I set my DNS to Google 8.8.8.8 instead of my local router. After a couple of software updates on the router it was fixed and I could go back to letting it automatically setting the DNS to itself.
