would you!?
Would you give one of your cars to a freind? My wife and I have a friend who's in need of a car, well wouldn't you know we have an 2007 Infiniti m35 that we were thinking about selling. In my mind to get it ready for sale is a time consuming pain in the butt, but my wife would like to get money out of it.
I feel as though our friend needs it more then we need the money. Don't think our friend has the means to pay a whole lot for a car and realistically the cars only worth about $5000 the way it sits, so what would you do give it away or prep it to sell? Being self employed it would definitely take time from my already busy schedule! Thanks in advance for your thoughts...Steve |

I'd probably give it away...kinda wish I had something like that to give to my honorary nephew who is having a tough financial time since his divorce. Working for barely above minimum wage, his ex getting most of it, alimony and child support. His '97 Camry is now at 270.000 miles or so.

So many variables. Given your situation vis your wife, I would compromise and pay someone to prep it for sale.

I wouldn't give away something expensive. I wouldn't give away something dangerous. There are very few people I'd give a car to. I wouldn't want the car to be totaled the following weekend in a one-car DUI accident.

The friend is more the wife's friend. They worked together for many years and still hang out. She's 65 so not real worried about her not being responsible with the car. The car is mechanically in great condition. The only thing is one tpms needs replacing and the passenger seat has alot of wear. Otherwise great condition. Thanks for the thoughts...Steve |

But if she were a good friend I probably wouldn't have a problem giving her enough money to buy a modestly priced "transportation" car. Say in the $1500 range. |

That $1500 is an arbitrary number based on what i figured a reliable beater could be purchased for.
there are 62 cars/trucks advertised in the Hilton Head SC craigslist for $1500 and under. I kinda like this one: nissan maxima - $1500 2006 maxima condition: excellent cylinders: 6 cylinders fuel: gas paint color: white size: full-size title status: clean transmission: automatic type: sedan 2006 Nissan Maxima se,1 owner,0 accidents, clean title, new emission, miles 127k,no smoke,no pets,4 brand new tires ![]() https://augusta.craigslist.org/cto/d/nissan-maxima/6235599223.html |

I've given away one pickup truck and one car, plus a motorcycle. None of them meant all that much to me anymore, nor would have gotten enough money to make any difference in my life. They sure made a difference in the recipients' lives, though, which was all I was after. Funny, none of the three are in my life in any way anymore, but that's o.k.. Changing lives saw us drifting apart, which is fine; they were all good people whom I'm sure have done well. I never expected any kind of lifetime obligation, or payback, or any of that. Probably never see any one of them ever again.

Yep! BTDT. Sold my 91 Maxima to a younger friend for pennies on the dollar at the time. He needed something roomier with a family on the way. I'd put almost 300k on it, owned it since new but, with the regular maintenance I'd put into it, I knew it had several years of good use left. It got him through the first several years with a child.
Given the value of your time to get your car ready to sell, what will the return actually be?

Yes, I would, unless you really need the money.

If giving away a $5000 car makes you FEEL good, go for it. I believe I could accomplish the same goal just a little smarter and still have a decent chunk of change in my pocket. |

Better than giving the 5k to a church.
Guess those are better feelings, eh Samwise?
