Yup... brought my 911 to a local shop to fix some oil leaks and some other things.

He did a great job and worked on it like it was his own, unfortunately, he charged me full rate. That stung...

So, online the tire would cost you $45 ?

Bike shops make their money on maintenance, not bike sales. The "lifetime tuneup" is a great way to keep you coming back and get you to pay for maintenance items.

I sometimes have my commuter worked on mid week when I don't have time and bite the bullet. 50 bucks on bike repair is nothing if I compare it to what a commuter car will cost, even DIY...

My gf had Hep C for quite a long time, I'm guessing at least 15 years. She has been going to the local liver center for checkups, until the hospital closed. A couple years ago, a new liver center opened with different doctors, and I told her to get a referral from her primary. She went and got tested and was at stage 2. A year later, it progressed to the high 2s. Tried to get medical to cover it but it was denied. We appealed and it was still denied. A few months later the liver center did another test and she came back stage 3.

Harvoni was prescribed. $30k a month for the meds x 2 months, but medical did cover it. I didn't want her worrying about the co-pay because she typically has a 20% co-pay, so I told her I'd take care of it. When I picked up her first dose I just gave my credit card to the pharmacy and expected a charge in the thousands! I get the charge slip back and it was $5! The pharmacy worked with the manufacturer and got a discount card for $5 co-pay. The pharmacy even worked with the liver center and got the extra month of meds for her!

A couple of thoughts.

I don't think you overpaid at all. You paid for them to have a tire and sealant in stock that they could put on, essentially, while you waited.

If you did it yourself, you would have to find the tire and sealant either in a store, like the shop you were at, purchase it and install it. Or find it online, order, pay for shipping, wait 1 to 5 days for it, then put it on yourself.

The older I get, the more I value my time over money, $30 is 15 minutes to me.


Free tune-ups for life. They have to pay for those somehow. And more importantly, part of that tire mark-up is paying for a quality bike mechanic that will make your derailleur shift well.

That's a ripoff

I had a tow truck driver in Dallas attempt to charge me $1800 to unlock my car after I locked my keys inside the rental car. I signed the invoice he presented as I thought it was $18.00 not $1800 for the service.

I ended up arguing with him and walking away (with my keys) and leaving $18 on the hood. He parked behind my car for 30 minutes before giving up. I had rental insurance and his license plate number so I didn't care if he decided to go nuts on the car.

cold you for sure need to give his info to city officials.

I just went into a glass place to get some custom cut reading lenses installed into my dental loupes. Yesterday, I visited two places, both of which required eye exams and were booked out until september. The second place wanted me to get an entirely new set of glasses, yet the salesperson was nice enough to be honest with me "look- I know what you are trying to do. We aren't allowed to do it for legal reasons, but, if you go up the street to XXXX, they can get it done and they do a good job."

Today, at lunch, I went to that place to get an estimate, and basically just to see if it could be done. He took my glasses, went into the back, and several minutes later came back, handing me back a pile of my croakies/ magnifiers/ side shields, with him keeping the frames. "We can have it back by tomorrow- perhaps even today."

Thanks I said "But I have patients to see this afternoon." Laughing I said " you guys don't mess around." I was just trying to get an estimate. I was a little concerned as without my magnfiers, I could not treat anyone. I felt like Clark Griswold in vacation where upon not wanting the family truckster (he wanted the little red sports thingee), he turned around to get back into his old car, which had been crushed.

Fortunately, I have a spare pair of loupes at the office, and am excited at how soon they will be done, especially after yesterday's setbacks, however....

We never discussed price! :D

As an update to my post- I got a call from company XXXX.
"Your glasses are ready..."

Picked them up. In 3 hours, they not only cut a new set of 1.5x readers for the main lenses- they cleaned and refurbished the main glasses, all new screws, tightened everything- I also bought new croakies and some new set screws... $!6.00 in extra price.

total price- $65

compared to first place $140 deductible after insurance.

Here's another one. Several years ago, a contractor friend renovated a 2 bd walkup for me. New paint, carpeting/tile, and locks and it ran about $5k. Not bad, but a little high. I had another 2 bd that became vacant and I gave it to him to do. Same stuff to be done, but the shower/tub had a leaking pan. They ripped everything out to the guts, repiped in copper and put in a new shower made with some type of solid surface material. They also changed out the toilet and sink, while they were at it. I get the bill a few months later. $24k! :eek:
