Rennsport 2018

I'm sorry if this is a re-post. I've been away from my computer. Hey, Its Car Week in Monterey. I got word of this yesterday at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue, then saw this when I got home.

Porsche announces Rennsport Reunion VI to be held September 2018

If you remember what happened last time, you may want to make your reservations before the word gets out.

WTH? It needs to come back to Daytona. I thought it was to alternate between the East and West coasts?

I'm guessing you'll have to call the hotel directly to make a reservation, as most online sites seem to only look 9-12 months ahead. I just hope they don't change the date on me again, I was able to get a better hotel but it was expensive to reboot the flights.

Just booked, can't wait! Yeah, I had to call, online booking didn't go out that far.

I think the turnout was so big in California they couldn't justify going to Daytona again.

With PCNA now calling the shots and Brian Redman just an 'ambassador', it's never leaving California. The first one at Lime Rock in 2001 with Redman in charge was the best in my opinion. Small, inexpensive, all-access, club atmosphere. Now it's just another uber expensive, tightly organized, hyper-event along the lines of the Scottsdale auctions, etc. Follow the money

Did you go in 2015? It was big but not that expensive and stillall access. I was standing right next to canepas 917 as he hopped in a fired it up and headed out. Great event!

PCNA also had a fleet of cayennes there shuttling people up to the top of the cork screw.

I did not go to 2015. Everyone I talked to said it was a great event. I'm just not interested in mass amounts of people, traffic, etc. I'm referring to the overall expense of attending the event, mainly hotel rooms, transportation, parking, food, etc. in Monterey, one of the most expensive areas in the country. I think we got rooms in Daytona right across from the track for $75 or so for RRII/III. Cross the road, go through the tunnel and you're there.

Oh it'll be back.
As soon as climate change makes California roll into the Pacific.

Have you ever been to Laguna Seca and Monterey? It It's one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Laguna Seca is 15 minutes from Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Drive a couple more miles south and you have Carmel, Pebble Beach, Spyglass, and Big Sur. 45 miles north and you can be partying in Santa Cruz with 20-something hippy chicks who think the 60's era of free love and Janis Joplin are still in style (just bring weed). IMHO, Laguna is hands down the best place to hold it.

If you're on a budget, there are LOTS of camping options within 30 minutes drive, including camping at Laguna Seca. Carmel and Monterey have 100's of Mid-priced B&B's, and 12 miles away Salinas has plenty of cheaper travel motels.

So tell me... how will this event be different than Parade? What is the target demographic?

I don't think I can take another event with the Poser crowd and their GT4s that have never been within 15 miles of a race track.

Oh and yes, I have raced at Laguna Seca twice and won there once.

^^ Craig is absolutely correct it is a great venue and a fabulous area.
I was just there about a month ago and Monterey is a rolling exotic car show most of the year.

But maybe the rest of the country is worthy to enjoy the event once in a while, maybe every 3 or 4 years. There are other cool tracks and places too.

Personally I've come to realize that vintage events that include all marks are more interesting to me, love the variety of mixed gatherings.

I'm sure it will be a porschetastic gathering, have fun!

Cheers Richard

Last time it was chock full of older cars. The main event all weekend is all of the various race groups, from current cup cars all the way back to 917s and 356s! It's a serious spectacle!

Imagine going to the Porsche museum, and having a full on race break out. That's what rennsport is.

I was at the Monterey Reunion over the weekend, had a great time, there was a lot of people talking about Rennsport and how they were looking forward to it be back in Monterey. We, San Francisco Region, have been getting request from marshal all over the country who want to work the event.
If you want to save some money look for rooms in some of the smaller towns around the area. Watsonville, where I live, is about 30 minutes north and I'm sure much cheaper than Monterey.
As time gets closer, I'm sure I'll have a free pass for someone.

Daytona does have advantages: Disney's about an hour away to keep mom and the kids happy. Orlando airport with direct flights over the pond. I think there is people with money on east coast somewhere. Daytona is a huge facility. Maybe the track is two big and fast for the older cars?

Plus it's only a little over an hour from my house.

Good to know. I am tempted, but if it's a big production "hyper-event" I'll pass.
