What a mess....

found this the other day. Total failure of the rear upper shock retaining ring on my 914.
High stress area so I'm reluctant to just weld it back up. Opinions? Fastfred would be the closest repair guy I would trust. Anybody have a contact number for him? PM me.

First, I would fab a good sized plate that fit the tower really well, then drill some holes for plug welds, and weld the perimeter of the new plate. The large hole in this plate needs to simulate the factory hole.

Then I would clean up the top piece, drill some holes to plug weld it back on where the factory spot welds were, and I would weld the perimeter of that piece also.

Look at the area you initially had, six spot welds, each 1/4" diameter. And that last a long time.

68000 miles. i think it was Lars first day on the job. Good advice..thanks. I have a local guy that teaches at a welding school that says he will do the job. Talk around town is he can weld ice. I also thought of just finding a donor car at sawing the tower off of it and welding that on as well. Actually I'm wondering what the cause was. The car is not lowered in the back, and has newer yellow Bilstien struts. however the car was sitting in heated storage for quite a few years and I may have a strut that is seized. It will only move up and down about 1/2" if you jump up and down in the rear trunk.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Ideally you TIG weld it up and it will be OK. I would strongly consider adding some additional reinforcement because it may crack in the heat affected zone. Oh and replace that shock.
