Question: How to paint perfect stripes on textured garage wall

This last weekend, I sheetrocked, taped, textured, and I'm now painting. I painted the garage pure white and will be epoxing the floors in a couple of weeks.

I was thinking that I might add a little interest by painting the lower section of the walls light gray with a black or maroon stripe across the top. Similar to my photos below.

I'm wondering if any of the experts have any tips for painting the stripe at the top of the gray section without it looking winkled or bleeding around the tape. I had the walls textured with an orange peel texture so it's not perfectly smooth. If this is not possible to be done perfectly, I will leave the walls white.

I want to do something like this:

Don't paint. Just put up some wallpaper trim. That was done in my house when I moved in. Top of wall one color, bottom another with a strip of wallpaper to trim it out.

I used some inexpensive wood moulding, painted it and used finishing nails to secure.

1. Good quality tape.

2. Multiple thin thin thin layers of paint on the transition.

I like the wall paper suggestion but if you want a paint stripe, get a good quality masking tape, make sure the first coat is dry enough to apply that tape and then have at it.

Put up the paint, then paint over the paint edge with the wall paint which will fill in any spots that the tape didn't "seal" in the texture. Then once that paint has dried, paint the stripe color.

I even found a bunch of sites on the 'net that have the same instructions.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought of moulding but I like this idea. Looks Great! Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not opposed to the wallpaper idea but if I had planned on that, I wouldn't have textured the walls. To wallpaper, I would need to float the wall first. I'm hoping to get this job done in the next couple of days so I can start preping the floors for epoxy (for that, I need a couple of weeks).

+1 to what masraum said.
I just finished my garage and painted a red strip on cider block. Paint the base colors first, tape your stripe, paint over the stripe with the base color then let it dry. Paint the stripe and pull off the tape. It like magic

I missed the part in your OP about textured. Not sure how but I did. Yeah that will add a degree of difficulty. The chair rail molding would be an easy addition.
Look into a husqvarna floor grinder to rent for the epoxy. It only has a 10" head but those diamond inserts make quick work of prepping the floor.

I bought my colored paints last night but I was too tired to do anything but watch Narcos on Nerflix .

Watched several YouTube vids and I think I can paint the stripe. If I screw that up, I will switch to the molding.

RE: floor prep for epoxy, I'm going to rent the floor grinder at home depot. I went and looked at it last night to see if it would fit in the back of my 944. No, it definitely won't. The things weighs at least 200 lbs. I will take the work truck home this weekend. I'm getting anxious as my garage is going to be the best looking room in my house!

Prior to grinding the surface of the floor, I am going to degrease, pressure wash, degrease, pressure wash, etc.... This stuff is going to be stuck on forever.

Ok, I did it.

I first put up the tape to mark the area to paint.
I used clear caulking and smeared the edge where the stripe will be painted.
Let dry & painted.
Because of the color, the burgandy strip took 3 coats before I stopped seeing the gray & white below it.

My finished product: Currently painting the baseboards black and then I will be doint an epoxy floor after a couple of weeks prep work.

Prefer minimalist white to make it brighter and see things easier, sky blue ceiling keeps bugs from building nests and textured light gray epoxy floor for easy cleanup.
