A Springfield Carbine Proven To Have Been At Custer's Last Stand
https://jamesdjulia.com/?s=1235&post_type=page_catalog&meta_key=catalog_aucID&meta_value=397
The Martin inscribed carbine has been forensically proven to have been at Custers Last Stand. Having belong to Trumpeter John Martin as so inscribed. The last white man to have seen Custer alive and lived to tell about it. The story is in the description provided by the link. I know the owner/collector of the carbine Glenwood Swenson...it is shown in his book on 7TH Cav memorabilia The Life And Times Of George Armstrong Custer which photographed his and others collections of Last Stand artifacts. Really a nice book to have. In the late 90's Glenwood sold off a number of other artifacts from his collection through Julia's auction, one of them being a Winchester 73 that was forensically proven to have been used by an Indian. That Winchester brought a record for a Winchester at that time of $675,000.00. The estimate on this one is 175K to 250K. In my opinion this one could really blow the doors off in price because it is the only known rifle that they can tie to an individual participant. Glenwood told me the story of how he acquired the carbine. He had acquired it from a young guy who walked into the Beinfield gun show at the Rivera on a Sunday. Glenwood paid him a few hundred for it. He basically knew he had something, in that he knew who Martin was and that he was connected to Co H and that the Serial number was in the right range. The other thing that the auctioneer is not very conversant (dummy) about is how a cartridge case got to the last stand site as Martin wasn't on Last Stand Hill when Custer got rubbed out. He was fighting with Reno and Benteen in the Defensive Fight and thus survived. After the massacre Benteen and Godfrey with 14 Troopers went to view the massacre....presumably Martin, Voit and Windrolph were among the fourteen. I have a "Big Springfield" 50/70 2ND Allin Conversion rifle that belonged to Otto Voit. Voit was a 30 vet of the 7th Cav and Medal of Honor receiptant for bravery at the LBH Defensive Fight. My rifle has been tested, but no cartridge case that was found at the site matched. It was through that rifle that I met Glenwood and other principles of the Archaeological digs at the Little Big Horn..

Been there twice. It's interesting to see how and where everything played out.
They call in "battle of the little big horn" now I think. |

How does it shoot? Do they have any targets they can show us?

Thanks Tabs. I love historical stuff like this.
Meanwhile, What's up with the hammer Jeff? It looks like the head of the securing screw has broken off. ![]()

I’ve seen “Custer range” guns sold before. But fascinating that one is confirmed. Update the thread when it sells.

Why didn't Custer issue AR 15's?

U can see why I had my hopes up when I acquired the Voit rifle. The testers had thought that my rifle could have been Captain French's "Big 50 Springfield" |

They felt sorry for the injuns and wanted to give them a chance.in other words they wanted to be fair.
Now at the Alamo it was a USPS holiday so the delivery was a day late. Last edited by tabs; 10-13-2017 at 11:19 PM.. |

That gun has been considerably cleaned up. Is that normal for such an artifact ?

So cleaned but not altered..I would say spoons would normally get that if needed. It is not detrimental to their value. Glen was smart enough not to fk with it... You wouldn't give more than 200 for my Voit rifle...as a wall hanger. It shows frontier use but not abuse..
