Who makes their own Root Beer

When I was a kid, my dad used to brew Root Beer for us using the Hires extract. This is no longer available.

There is Hires Big H which is different but similar and Zataraines extract. The other option is making from scratch using sassafras, sarsaparilla, wintergreen, licorice, ginger, hops, juniper, birch and wild cherry bark in some combination.

What do you do? Using the extract seems the easiest but these are expensive in low quantities.

Huh, never heard of that, but I love root beer. If you find a recipe and it's good post it.
I've been sampling the liquor kind but I have yet to find one that is not really sweet

As a Canadian beef producer, I can't do A&W. They use Australian beef as opposed to supporting local markets.

My dad used to make it. One batch he stored over top of the furnace (giant old coal unit converted to oil and then converted to gas). He bottled them in 28 oz glass bottles. One blew up and took out about a dozen glass bottles. The contents ran down into the furnace ducts and for several months afterwards the whole house smelt of root beer every time the furnace came on.

Canada imports $120 million worth of Australian beef a year. A guy I know got a day job (back in the 70's) unloading a freezer ship load of sides of beef in Vancouver. It's turned into canned stews and dog food.

Really, I did not know that, well I'm boycotting them then.

And please explain why our beef is so expensive right now when they say less are eating it?

I don't know why the prices are up. To give you an idea what I get as a farmer, I sold 3 yearling steers back in September.

Steer 1 - 885lbs - $174/100 lbs = $1539.90
Steer 2 - 760lbs - $181/100 lbs = $1375.60
Steer 3 - 660lbs - $188/100 lbs = $1240.80

And then I had to pay auction fees and I estimate these 'shrunk' 5-10% in the 3 days at the lot before the auction (it was the only time I could haul them).

Steer 2 and 3 were twins and 3 was the runt. Steer 1 was almost ready to butcher. These were all grass fed animals with no steroids or supplements.

I will be butchering one in a week or so if you are looking for some grass fed farmer direct beef.
