Well, my 911 is parked for the forseeable future, my somewhat ugly oil consumption problem (~1 qt/300 miles) got REALLY ugly last week, jumping to a 1/2 quart in 40 miles. The car is out to pasture while I figure out just what I want to do, and come up with the funding to do it. It seemed like the ideal time to dig up this thread.

V8 in a 66 912

I'm nearing completion of my v8 sbc in a 66 912. Edlebrock
aluminum heads, holley street avenger, comp cam, edlebrock
intake, etc. 915 trans with centerforce dual clutch, Ron Davis
racing radiator, upgraded 75 911 suspension and 930 flares.
I also have a 76 911S. If I hadn't come along and rescued
this old 912 it would end up in the junk yard. Sure, I 'd love
to install a high performance 930 motor in a 911, but since
I don't have 20-30 grand I'll settle for this route cause
I want a very very fast Porsche to humilitate these ricers
and boy are they getting on my nerves. I don't think anyone
disputes the fact that a 911 motor is superior to a v8. It's
simply a cost alternative and nothing else.
For those interested in this kind of conversion an LT-1 will
not work in a 911, however they will install in a 944, 928. It
has to do with the water jackets in the front of the block.
Anyone with knowledge on the possibility of installing a 928
motor in a 911 please let us know. To KS911, Keith thanks
for your technical advice and all the pics you sent me. I
appreciate it. Too bad some people on this subject don't
fully appreciate your technical ability.

I'd be interested in this info as well but instead of a 911, put a 928 motor into a 914 for a sweet little midengine pure-porsche V8 car.

JWest 10-01-2002 06:12 AM

Check the 914 board. There is a guy doing a 914 with a 928 motor - he is really busy so his progress is slow but he has posted pics. Also, a company in Germany sells some converted cars - both 16 and 32 valve 928 motors in 914s. There were some pics posted a while back of those cars.

thrown_hammer 10-01-2002 06:37 AM

I have looked into the renagade kit. It comes out about the same price as a 3.6 swap. I don't see how it is any cheaper. The engine may be a cheaper but by the time you buy everything else to do it right, it's a wash. The savings would come in HP upgrades, as the 911 3.6 costs far more to "hop up".
I don't condem the V8 swap. I am considering both(3.6 and V8). I just don't see the savings VS. all the extra work to do it right.

targa911man 10-01-2002 06:40 AM

Lighten up on ks911. People have done worse things to Porsches. Take the 996 for example.

jess p 10-01-2002 05:53 PM

cost of a v8 conversion

Here is a rundown on the cost of a v8 conversion.

Custom radiator (Ron Davis) includes twin electric fan with
all associated sheetmetal
$1100.00
This kit, available from Renegade Hybrids
is of very high quality!

Adapter kit $1700

High Performance clutch kit Centerforce Dual $750

Then figure in the cost of a V8

The conversion if done by yourself could be performed in
roughly 40 hrs.

I thought i should add my name to this thread, after reading every page today i think it is only prudent to do so.
I can see many points made here, some technical ,some emotional. there will never be a solution that would make everyone happy.
I am sure that the V8 has served its purpose for ks911. he seems very happy with his conversion. i am happy for him, he has found what he wants in his car, other people are really happy restoring a porsche 911 to its former glory and have found what they want. others transplant larger or newer engines into their cars and get what they want. hell i still want a 911 even after reading these forums for a long time, but for now i will have to contend with my friends cars as well as my fathers 996.

Victor 10-03-2002 04:38 PM

Dammit, I have to add to this crumbling pile of crap post.

If we need a Cayenne forum for all the whinerers who don't like it because Porsche should have stopped mechanical and aesthetic development with the '73RS and just kept making those for less than $12,000, maybe there should be a chevvy V8 conversion forum if the idea is so bloody good. Then this post could be moved there (no doubt in solitary confinement).

There I said it.

Rich Brennick 10-19-2002 04:55 PM

I, too enjoy the fan whine of a flat six, but I also enjoy the sound of a Pete Jackson "noisy" cam gear drive set right next to my ear in my 914 with a 283 7000RPM plus engine.
Yep, parts on Sunday is good, too; but I haven't needed any.

I bet the Brits wanted to fry Carrol Shelby when he went to help a small company called "A.C." get in the game.

Very enjoyable reading so far.

It's snowing in Michigan!

That car scared me just sitting still inside the shop.

Brad Roberts 10-19-2002 10:55 PM

Romp on the loud pedal and it seperates the men from the boys real quick.

I set the rev limiter at 7200.

The early chassis (72) is really really light. I had NO idea they where that much lighter than a SC chassis.

The injection system really smooths out the .625 lift cam at idle. I have it set to idle in open loop and go into closed loop at 1400RPM. It will NOT idle in closed loop..LOL

Finally nailed down the IAC this evening (Idle Air Control) motor. I couldnt make the damn thing idle. Now, when you fire it up.. it goes to 1300 rpm and then trickles down to 1000-1050 when the IAC takes over. You can watch the voltage to the IAC... it is all over the map trying to keep that V8 at 1000-1050 rpm, but it does it.

Pretty cool programmable system for under 1400$

Try romping on the loud pedal of a full race stroker 410ci 351w with 650HP on the motor alone and a small (250HP) shot of juice just for fun :D My rev limiter even with a 4 inch stroke is set at 8000 cam lift over .700" and duration at .050" over 310 with 13.5:1 compression it's a blast to be sure but my lowly P-car with a carbed 3.0 is just as fun if not more so. V8s and H6s are totally different animals and each has their good and bad points for me the good point of the 410 in my Mustang is it really is a racecar and I get the total racecar experience that I wouldn't get with a smaller turbo/super-charged V6 or V8. In the P-car I get a whole different experience, almost like I'm driving a F1 car with smooth and quick revs, a unique sound etc. If I ever decide I need a V8 sportscar I'll get a Pantera or a Shelby Cobra. Several years ago I drove a track-prepped Shelby GT350 Mustang and got a similar experience to what the P-car gives me, it's that little bit of nostalgia combined with race heritage that makes these totally different cars so enjoyable to drive. To me the engine is a big part of the experience that makes a 911 a 911 and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think that's how a lot of P-car owners feel and it's a big reason we'll spend 10x more money on HP upgrades than we would on a V8. To each his own to be sure but I'll keep the flat six over any other option. ;)

Just a quick update.

The yellow v8 911 seen earlier is still alive and well.

Brakes have gotten bigger, full cage is going in soon. Dual MC with NASCAR type calipers. Very nice SBC with roller rockers, alum heads, etc.

Away, car handles well at the track, running about 1.54s at CMP.

You know I wish those CRAZY Porsche engineers would have thought of this earlier. Just buy GM V8's at wholesale cost and install them into 996's and then I'd be able to afford to buy a new one for about $30G's WOW!!!!:p

Brad Roberts 10-21-2002 10:21 AM

Your wish may come true.

I willing to bet a SBC that Porsche does a V8 996 in the near future.

subaru ej20 turbo for 911???

Guy suggests the ej20 turbo for the 911 or 914 in this ad.

Anyone ever heard of this before? Ever been done? Is it 'relatively' easy? Maybe he was just suggesting it so he could ship it quickly.

Anthony.

atlporsche 11-06-2002 04:42 AM

except for running the plumbing, The engine is a "bolt on" with a Kennedy engineering adapter plate. I've talked to them about putting the 2.5L NA motor in my 912. but the 912 started running better (a little tuning, and too much oil were the culprits of rough running)...I can give you prices and thoughts...

what are you putting it in??

If you want to talk about this more, write me at sdrabant@durhamgeo.com

Be careful. this motor has the air to water intercooler. the EJ20T you want is the one with the air to air intercooler. this one might not necessarily have the 220 advertised HP. Besides there is no EJ20DET...that's nissan infection...it SR20DET...in subarus it's only EJ20t or EJ20TT (the twin turbo mill came in 'special' legacys.)

All sorts of things peole do to their Porsches -- aside from storing them inside a plastic bubble -- are not in the actual best interests of the cars. Track time dramatically increases the risks of damage being done to the cars -- from collisions and accidental mechanical over-revs more than anything else -- but also from the stresses of high-speed driving. Turbochargers and superchargers are a bad idea -- if preservation and longevity are part of your engineering goals. Turning a stock street car into a track car means ruining its stock value. Adding aftermarket suspension and brakes also turns it into a different car.

My point is this: 99% of the cars discussed on this board, in one way or another, are getting used, and modified, and subjected to -- if nothing else -- creeping metal fatigue on a daily basis. No one gets bent out of shape about the addition of enormous spoilers, or turbo flares, or any of the other modifications that also (generally) deteriorate the long-term integrity of the car. For some reason the V8 conversions make people nuts -- even when the converter doesn't boast (as no one in this thread did) about "how superior an alternative [the V8 mule] is to a 911."

Again, I am not a fan of V8 conversions. But then again, I'm not a fan of weekend wannabe racers putting the cars into walls and fenceposts, either. And I'm not a fan of the number of 911s that get junked every year because it's no longer economically viable to keep them running. Those are all bad things; they shrink the pool of available 'real' 911s for future generations. But why do people have to come down so hard on the V8 converters? I don't get it. A tiny minority of Porsche owners (and even a small minority of people on thie board) are really dedicated to doing everything in their powers to preserve the longevity of our cars. Most of us would much rather gamble it all and do the MOST dangerous thing you can do to a Porsche -- subject it to the risks of public roads and other drivers.

I don't want to start a flame war, here. But I am trying to suggest that when some of the tiny minority of Porsche owners who opt to do a non-Porsche engine swap decide to run a thread on a discussion board, we should give them a little break. It's going to be tough enough for them to get any respect in POC or PCA circles. Put any of us behind the wheel of our 911, and it's easy to forget: cars are still just cars. Porsches -- as great as they are -- are still mass-produced, consumer-oriented, four-passenger vehicles designed to get people to work, or to the store, or to grandmothers, and back again. They're not sacred cows. They are awesome cars. But they're just cars.

Absolutely correct post, from a moderator even. Too bad some people can't get it.

Another interesting common thread in discussions about conversions (I got this from Rotary purists when I did my V8 RX7 converison, that also worked better than stock):

"without the Porsche (or insert car brand here) engine in it, it's crap/not a Porsche (or RX7, etc)." As though none of the rest of the car mattered at all. It's the ENGINE that made the car. I got told when I did my Ford 5.0 conversion in my RX7 that "If you wanted a Mustang, you should have BOUGHT a Mustang becasue now it's no better than a Mustang." COnsidering that they were trying to insult my car by insinuating that since a Mustang is a POS, then my car is too. I always respond with, "since you think the Mustang is so bad, and all I've done is change the engine, you must feel that other than the engine, the RX7 is built poorly, with bad ergonomics and no style."

CamB 11-06-2002 10:59 AM

Well, I know a dude here in New Zealand who has a 2.0 non-turbo Subaru flat 4 in his Kombi - it runs 13s on the quarter mile.

My only comment is that I might have to start buying engines in Japan and selling them in the US, 'cause I get the feeling the dudes prices are above NZ$ ones.

In the December Excellence they had a one page blip on the 2005 and 2006 porsche and it had rumored of a V8. Wow, would that throw a wrench into these discussions!!!

zymurgist 11-07-2002 06:36 AM

Hey ks911,

Thanks for sharing. Personally, I like both Porsches and Chevys. The small block should be a reliable runner for you with a lot of low end grunt. So what if it isn't everyone's cup of tea... it's your car and if it makes you happy, go for it.

I'm impressed that you managed to get it all together and that it works well for you. Putting together engines and cars that weren't designed to go together is a bigger project than I would be willing to do. SmileWavy
