i GOT 400!!!
SJD |
WWWoooww, I started this two and half years ago, wow!!!
The subject in question is still alive and well. Engine, Brakes, Safety equipment, done...I will now get serious with the suspension, and weight loss program. The suspension is not stock but not full race either, that will change this winter. The goal is to race SCCA Unlimited or the NASA Unlimited class this year. I don't think I can get my car past PCA tech, he,he. It has been two and a half years sense I first started the little bastard and if it was totaled tomarrow I would rebuild another one just like it. I have owned many cars of interest but never have I owned one that raised as many eye brows or as many hairs on the back of my neck. Every time I drive the car I absolutely love it. If you can say the same thing about your car than you truly a lucky person........differant stokes for differant folks.....literaly. |
Ok..... I'm here to settle this dispute once and for all. I think we can come up with a solution that satisfies both parties. Porsche purists consider it blasphemist to remove the classic flat six while the v8 crowd insists that so much more can be gained by applying so much less. Therefore I propose " DUEL ENGINED PORSCHROLET" What could be better than having the best of both worlds, a flat 6 in the rear where it belongs, and a big fat heavy chevy v8 in the front where it belongs. Hell, we've seen crazier things on e-bay! But one thing............no cupholders!!!!!
|
John,
Your sarcastic humor is the very reason I only follow up on this thread once in a blue moon. Besides I am not sure you would be able to hear the beloved fan whine over the big block. My be you could install a V8 and attach a three foot fan just for the audio effect. :) |
Enjoying mine
I wrote a whole page but lost it. Will write later but here's a pic.
Its now back to the original Silver with new interior, and 345 horses. And no, its not falling apart. As for the sound, try a notched v-belt and route the exhaust to the center!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/911engine2.jpg |
The other pic and the rest of the story
Started out as a repainted(incorrectly) 80 911SC. Ive always loved the look and the sound of this car, but the power just wasnt there, nor was it affordable to add. This car was perfect for the change. This is a 327@345 HP, center exhaust, new interior and painted back to original. I DO regret butchering this car, especially after the way it turned out, but I soon forget about it after a few 140mph passes. I love the feel of this car just as much as my buddies new 911. I dont have to worry about killing it up since it since just about anything on it can be fixed without taking out a second mortgage...AND.....I beat the snot out of my brothers 2002 and sisters 2003 Vette!
Yes its wrong to disgrace Porsche, but like everyone is saying....its not a Porsche anymore....Its a Porsche killer...oops just kidding...its just another hot rod. Id rather have fun now than wait another 15 years for the twin turbo. Enjoy Johnhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/911side1.jpg |
John,
At risk of being beheaded. Bravo! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif Do your own thing and be proud. P.S. Are you in JAX? I lived there for four years. |
St Augustine actually, thanks. It'll be for sale once the heat and air are operational. Funny how the toys have to go when a baby's on the way! Then they grow up and say "Man...why didnt you keep it? I would have driven that!"
|
We are going on our family vacation in St. Augustine this spring. Maybe we could meet for lunch at the "Pizza garden" and go for a ride after? Or at least pop the hood on that thing for me?
|
John, I'd love to see pics of the front hood and how you cooled it. The car looks great with that front valence - most of the conversions I've seen use the RSR front, but yours looks really nice. Are you running a 915 or 930 gearbox?
I'd love to hear it. As much as I love my flat six (A Harley rider recently gave me the "thumbs-up" after a throttle blip at a traffic light), I can still get goose flesh from an SBC center exhaust. |
What would MR 9146 think of this monstrosity???????
|
we should have pointed him to the $12/hr tech help needed thread.
sjd |
Ive seen a few good web sites. I should throw one up just for the sound! Really revs and sound like a Ferrari. But here is a pic of the radiator install. I just couldnt cut the tank up, so I cut as close to it as possible and mounted the radiator as far forward into the front valence as possible. Then housed and hidden in aluminum. Its a Fluidine angled about 45 degrees with 2 puller fans. It vents down in front of the radiator(steaper than the pic). Before adding an external oil cooler and fan it ran about 230. Now runs about 200 in the heat 180 winter.
And its NO monstrocity, one ride with BOTH tires smokin down the driveway and YOU'LL be hooked too! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/MVC-001L.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/MVC-003L.JPG |
In 68 while living in Germany my father bought a 55 190 SL that was sitting in a barn. We are second owner. Painted it Porsche gold and did a tan interior with brown carpeting. Did a few motor and electrical mods and put Felt on the hardtop.
Felt is like GI Joe doll hair, very cool stuff, he also did a 57 300 coupe entirely in blue Felt, never had to wax the car, just brush it, used to freak him out when the cats sat on it. Anyway back then the cars were just used Mercedes's and not worth a lot. Mom drove the 190 daily and after a minor wreck the 300 sat in the garage for 10 years. Today they are both restored to original factory condition. The 190 is one of the most stunning cars I have ever seen. It has been used in movies, fashion shoots, an album cover and has never placed lower than 1st in any show or competition. They both get torn down and restored every few years. During the 1st restore we discovered that the 190 is the 7th one produced, it is the oldest 190 on the road. My point, while not a v8 conversion we customized the car and enjoyed it the way we wanted it for 15 years and then we restored it and have enjoyed it in it's original condition ever since. Do what makes you happy. It's not what you do in life that you regret, it's what you could have done but did'nt. Scott |
Sorry for the huge pics! Heres the last I promisehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/a222.jpg
|
Thats what I say Scott, If you have an idea and can make it happen, have fun doing it, and help someone else do the same, thats the whole car enthusiast way!
Cheers, John |

john,
nice car. do you have a rod simpson or renagade conversion. are you running a 915 tanny? iam finishing up my 77 911s with a zz4 and g50 conversion. attached is a pic of the radiator. franco |
Great Topic! I once heard of a SBC placed in the space where the useless back seats used to be, w/ an upside down 915. I imagine this would improve handling. Radiator in rear? Usable trunk up front. Any threads on this?SmileWavy

for about a year ive been wanting to do a v8 porsche project...
(instead i bought a boxster, then did up an nsx i bought).... v8 for several reasons... 1. want to limit how much i spend, ie a $10k SBC or a 30K 930 engine... 2. want a NA engine....the 3.8 NA wont give me the HP i want, not even close. 3. i like to use nitrous oxide....good tempory hp, easily reversable (compared to turbo SCing), also leaves car at a lower hp in normal=easier to control) 4. the money i save one engine, will be spent in other areas such as brakes, suspension, chassis stripping&prepping, carbon fibre body, lexan windows etc.... 5. this is a MUSCLE CAR....a fully customized PORSCHE...yes...these cars are still porsches, why???because porsche bulit them.... 6. lighter than a 930 engine 7. this is a car i will drive hard and abuse.....this car will be made for this....if i blow the porsche engine ill be p!ssed, if i blow this ill laugh... 8. a large capacity engine always has advantages over smaller capacity engines....its called low end torque....this is a street/track car....i need power out of turns and off the line...only cubes help here... ill start with an SC....(want power windows), itll then be stripped of everything and rebuilt....chassis strengthening and cage put in, 993 suspension, 993TT big reds, lexan windows, CF 993 GTR bodywork, then some very nice CF and leather interior, rebuilt and strengthened 915 (heard too much trouble fitting ins a g50-52).... thinking a beautiful silver colour...with maybe some green/purple tint....dark tinted windows, a dual exhaust and ive fallen in love...:D aim is the total project to come in around 100k AU (60US).... result.... RSR like weight, with more power than a GT2 if its not a porsche wats would i name it... |
j959,
basically thats what iam doing. however 993 suspension does not fit in a SC. and putting a g50 into my car is a ***** a g50/52 would require a coil over set up and full cage. |
KS911...I love the GM V-8's, they're American Classics...and I love the 911...loved it as a kid and still do...but my love for the 911 wasn't under the hood, it was all around it...it's the style...I would love to drive that car, not only is it a Porsche, it's a baaaddd Porsche...wow has this thread gone on and on...gotta love it though... :)
|
Love it so far...... feels like a GTO but can handle....Except that I have now thrown my water pump belt twice (v-belt). I will have to go to a serpentine or electric pump to handle the 7k+ shifts. Ks911, which electric pump did you go with? the other thing I would recommend is go with the 930 box because the 915 might break but you with have to shift too much. Unless you change the G50 gearing you will be shifting too much there too,but you will not break it. the 930 box clutch will have to be upgraded to handle a nitrous hit. Kennedy Eng can set you up with that.

this is the last board that I know of for anyone interested. the other 2 were shut down or closed. also there are few suppliers for this stuff. so shop wisely.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pors-chev/ good luck |
Franco, Mine was mostly Renagade with the 915 from the original set-up (80SC), Rod Simpson went whacki on me thinking I was a Renagade Spy! Man I was pissed. Wouldnt sell me individual items and sent wrong items. Anyway, Im very happy and now looking for a twin turbo setup by Banks or other. Looks like it'll fit nicely. BTW where does your heat from the radiator vent? Would love to see other photos. Im working on a nice long video. I cant get enough!
John |
just curious, but has anyone done a 928 engine in the 911?
|
I only had time to read the first three pages, then skipped to the last couple of pages (I'll try to read the others when I have more time).
Nice conversion, nice work. The original poster has a Porsche shop and has built flat 6s... no problem. I've always liked the sound of an air cooled 6 (no Corvairs, though...), but wouldn't mind a conversion (especially in a 914-4). Still a Porsche, but Porschev sounds ok, too. FWIW, alot/most of the 32 Fords had their flatheads yanked for an OHV Caddy/Olds/hemi/SBC/BBC and they are still called 32s or deuces or hot rods/street rods.... If they ran a nailhead (Buick) in a Ford, they called them Bufords. No big deal. If only this was the most important problem in the world, huh? |
|
Now THAT(928v8-911) would be the ultimate mack daddy. 928 punched to about 400 HP, EFI. Havent heard of anyone yet, but now youve got me thinking. Such problems we create! I'm thinking it would be to long to fit as nicely as the SBC. WHos got a measure ready?
John |
i had a 928 s4. the efi was a night mare. car ended up catching fire because of the bad efi. and iam not the only one.
|
So I really need some advise on the twin turbo set-up. Can I safely add mild boost to my already 10.25 to 1 compression?
John |
turbo is very expensive.... you can get a naturally asparited 500- 600 small blocks.
|
I already have about 345 in the 327 now. I just want it mostly for sex appeal and resale increase. I found a set of headers for $250 the fit T4's but know nothing about setting up the boost/waste and carburation.
John |
find an old martin turbo set up and you should be fine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/turbofit1.jpg

Speaking of routing the cooling system. THAT was the worst. But with so many configurations out there, it can be done relatively quick. If you get the sick desire to pull it off, email me. I didnt cut the original tank(as most require) and run at 180-200 all day with 10.1 comp. Im just jealous of the EFI. Ive been putting it off forever. Im sick og my carb!
Good luck! |
I expect to see alot more mods, like this one, as the prices of the older 911's continue to decline.
This reminds me of many of the posts you will find on the 951 board. Why? 951 are cheap initial investments, and a great platform for creativity. Older(non-concourse) 911's are beginning to reach the inexpensive initial investment stage. What a great platform to begin with! What was that old Porsche quote... something like 'I couldn't find the car I wanted so I built it'. This mod is not for me, but I enjoy(applaud) creativity and new approaches taken. |
Can you post some photos of the cooling system with the radiator line routing?
|
I have no pictures of the routing but my lines routed from the passenger side towards the center of the car, through 2 inch holes drilled in the rack and pinion then routed along the indentations of the floor pan. I'll try to take some pics.
|
I hadn't seen this thread for a year.....
