Insuring a project ?

I’m currently looking at quotes as my insurance is due for renewal .
I was at aaa today , and was told they can’t insure a project car .
Any other car I’ve done was already insured and I just carried on paying whilst it was off the road for the project .But this ones a little different as I’ve never insured it .

Who else can I try for project policies ?

I put my BMW track car in storage mode. Its still regeristered and insured. Not sure if your insurance company offers this but worth looking into. I think I pay something like $25 a month for insurance on this car, just isn't covered if I decide to drive it on the street unless i call and take it out of storage mode

Assuming it isn't registered and isn't operated it might be covered under your home insurance. You would have to talk to your agent but it isn't really a car yet if it can't be operated. If your home insurance does cover it you would need to make sure you have enough of a rider to cover the value.

Thanks for the help and replies .
Today he mentioned something along the lines of it being incurable once it’s back on its wheels and ready for the paint shop .
I’ll clarify tomorrow .
I’ll probably not bother bolting suspension and wheels on it just to make it insurable , as it’s already 90% stripped ready for dipping and e-coat

I wouldn’t be so bothered , if the prices hadn’t multiplied so much since I’ve been “working” on it .

Nathan , the person I was talking to today was at aaa and from what I’ve read they use haggerty for classic cars .
I’ll call haggerty tomorrow to see what they can come up with .

I like the idea of having all the cars on one policy with a reputable company , but if I have to split them between two reputable companies that’s fine .
Just one extra bill for me to forget to pay ....

My insurance company has never asked for a copy of my registration. In fact in my state I need insurance to get registration. My 914 has been parked for 5 years and is still insured.

Btw , I got a wrecked supercharged Range Rover and have not worked since June and I’m getting practically nothing from my “small” insurance company , and the car that hit me was insured by Geico and they’ve basically said “fu*k you” , so small companies are out and so is geico ...

This time I’m going for a “decent” insurance company that’s small enough to care but big enough to have balls

I'm with Progressive with my classics underwritten by Hagerty through my normal provider. I seem to remember having to provide pictures to verify condition but I'm not sure. I've had short term rollers I just threw on my regular insurance for a few moths at a time. Those didn't need pictures but the insurance was more expensive.

I think I’ve called them before and asked for flo , and they put the phone down on me

I’ll add them to the list , and I’ve been insured with them before through my 6-month broker ...

I’ve been with American Collectors Insurance for years. 10 year ago when I had a total loss claim on my 1983 SC (pause to curse uninsured, unlicensed snowflake who ran a light an T-Boned me) . . . they (American Collectors Insurance) were great resolving the claim. Below are their requirements for insuring the car, I think a project car could easily qualify. In fact, when I first insured my 1975 S it was a project car since the motor was out and it had no interior or brakes.

We will consider ANY vehicle that has collector merit and is appreciating in value however we require that they are:

1) Driven on a limited basis and not as a daily driver.
2) Not used for racing, timed events or Driver’s Education.
3) Kept in an enclosed, locked garage (alternate garaging options may be permitted; contact our representative).

My car is with Haggerty. It is undergoing a rotisserie restoration and they insured it for a stated value. Gives me comfort as things can happen at any time.

State Farm - I purchase comp insurance only when the cars sit or are projects. Perhaps because I have been with my agent forever, I call him, give the vin on a new project and it's done. No questions asked but I would also think you need to be selective on how you approach a company as a new client.

You could always get full coverage and in 30 days drop it down to just comp.
