Looking good by the way! |
Nice.
You should be very pleased with yourself: Except the pictures part of this thread...what is this, an Op-Ed page? Pictures. Then we can criticize:D |
Yes Seahawk pics are coming ! :D Today I finished the back wall except one thin piece to the left of the doorway that will lead to the compressor room . I will complete that tomorrow . And I am 50 % done on the right side floor to ceiling , with a little luck maybe can complete right side by Saturday . That will just leave the left wall . My once large pile of plywood is now very small , if I make no mistakes I think I'll have just enough to finish the interior . All cut off pieces will be used for the compressor room . I'm thinking I will be pic worthy by Sunday :D
|
Cabmando we are on the same page . When I go to install the ceiling panels I will remove the metal braces one by one . Picture the metal ceiling panel in place with no rail brace . On a ladder I will line up the support bracket with the mounting holes in the rafter and just lower it until it touches the metal panel . Take a Sharpie and outline where it touches . Then I will cut along the Sharpie line with a cut off tool . Then slide the support metal through what I just cut and attach to the rafter and the rail . Repeat three more times and done . Piece of cake :D

Hey everyone today was a beautiful day I was able to work in shorts and tee shirt......... about friggen time  Anyway I quickly realized there was some odds and ends I had been ignoring that were now going to hold me up so I piddled around for a few hours getting those all squared away . I have one piece of plywood to install over the entry door and one thin piece in the corner and the right side will be done . The section by the electrical panel I decided to do in pieces , my reasoning if I or whoever has to do any additional electrical work it could all be accessed by removing the individual pieces of plywood . Probably never happen but maybe someone in 100 years will appreciate what I did :D .
I still have one/two pieces to install on the back wall by the compressor room doorway but I realized I need to get the next two rows on the left wall in that corner installed before I can put in those back wall pieces . So I will concentrate on completing the right wall this weekend . Tomorrow is the 12 Hours of Sebring so I may take tomorrow off ;) So here are two pics of the interior progress , I can feel the end is slowly coming . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521228619.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521228619.jpg |
Yesterday I started watching the 12 Hour of Sebring race and had good intentions to watch the entire race :D But after about an hour into the race our wonderful Windstream DSL crapped the bed so no more streaming  I played around for about 20 minutes trying to reboot and finally gave up . I took that as a sign to go work on the building :D .
So I spent about 5 hours working it was another great weather day . I finished the right wall and the back wall and have about 45 % of the left wall done ! I made good progress yesterday . Today supposed to be another day in low 70's so I will attempt to finish the interior plywood . The weather is supposed to turn wet/colder by Tuesday so I'd like to be done cutting plywood by then . That way I can give the floor a good sweep/cleaning and start priming all the plywood . Will also caulk some joints that are less than stellar  At some point I'll have to start my finish trim around the windows and entry door but for now I'll concentrate on getting everything primed and painted . Two coats of semi gloss white is what I will do . If I complete the left wall today I'll post a pic . |
WOOHOO at aprox. 2:10 this afternoon I screwed the last piece of plywood into place !!! Man it felt good :D So all interior plywood is now installed , I'm happy and beat :p Been a long time coming but I'm there . Taking the rest of today off to just chill . Tomorrow will start the clean up of all the crap currently in the garage . I have two full sheets of plywood left over and a bunch of usable pieces . What ever I don't use for the compressor room I think I'll use for shelving .
After I get the garage cleaned up I'll start with the primer then the paint . I'm thinking by the end of this coming week I'll be done with the 2nd coat of paint . Then depending on the weather I'll either start with the metal wainscote or the concrete framing/pour for the compressor room . I gotta admit I'm feeling pretty good today on my progress ! Here is a pic of the left wall which was the last one to be covered . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521403264.jpg |
It's a good thing I finished the interior plywood when I did because about an hour after I posted I had a self inflicted wound appear :( As an avid DIYer I run all kinds of saws , drills , welders etc. you get the idea . I am always VERY aware of loose fitting clothes and just knowing what I am doing :D I rarely have accidents or make bad mistakes to cause injury .
So after I posted the pic my wife came in from outside where she was doing some spring planting . She wanted a rose bush moved from point A to point B , point B being next to our mailbox . Our mailbox is the typical wooden 4x4 post but has the added feature of a somewhat knife edge angle to the top  You can see where this is heading ! So I take the trusty shovel and survey the situation before I start to dig , I even ponder going to the man cave and grabbing the leather work gloves but nooooooo I don't need them :D So I start digging the hole and I'm almost done when I decide " just one more stab " is needed............ and that's when it happened ! With one mighty push I start the downward push and loose sight of how close my hands are to that knife edge........ ran my right pinky finger right over that knife edge  I knew I did some good damage right away . My wife was by my side and started yelling you need stitches ! In my best Monty Python voice I stated it's mearly a flesh wound :D She ran to the house to get some bandages while I painted the grass crimson red . So we have been doing the home wound care since then but today I had an appointment with the doc for routine blood work/follow up visit . I had him look at the wound , he was impressed with the depth and length of the jagged mess ;) He stated they would have done stitches had I come in but too late now . He said keep doing what you're doing ( wound care not self inflicted injuries ) and that was it . I didn't take any pics nor am I going to . It will be a few more days before I get back to the man cave . And yes I DID complete the task of moving the rose bush ! :D |
OK guys slowly getting back in the game with the wounded paw :D Today I removed everything from the garage , swept the floor of pounds of sawdust then hit the floor with compressed air to get it good and clean . Took me a while to move all the tools , 4x8 sheets and all of the cut off pieces . But she's clean and all I have in there are two tall ladders to be used for priming/painting . I plan on getting everything primed tomorrow . I made it through today without leaving a blood trail
I want to get one coat of paint on Sat. and a 2nd coat on Sunday and it will be done . Not much cutting in so " should " go fairly quick............ famous last words ! I hate to paint so it will take a beer or two to get motivated :D I'll post pics after she's painted . |
Nice progress!! I haven’t checked in here in awhile. The paint will go quick.
Bummer about the self inflicted wound... I know I’ve been there a time or two. It’s always at the instant of impact/injury I find myself thinking “Crap! How long will this take to heal!?” ...you don’t even have to look to know it was serious. Take it easy. 😄 |
Not much to report I did get the primer on today , just made it with 2 gallons of Kilz . And that was leaving about 2 ' from the floor unprimed because it will be covered by metal . But the primer gives me a good visual of some of the seams that will need to be caulked before I paint . So tomorrow will be dedicated to caulking and then getting the first coat of paint on .
I would rather take red hot rusty nails and poke myself with them vs. painting  I just hate to paint . But it has to get done so the sooner I start the sooner I finish :D I have 3 gallons of white semi-gloss so should be enough for the first coat will have to buy more for the second coat . Also today I ordered online all my switch and outlet covers . Went with flat black metal plates should contrast the white switches/outlets and white wall paint nicely . Hope to be installing the metal wainscote next week , after that I'll probably have to get going on the compressor room floor pour . Getting that room done will be the last piece of the puzzle to get me 100 % water tight . Have a great weekend everyone SmileWavy |
Looking good, r!
Yeah - getting flesh wounds kinda goes with the territory but the worst part is when blood drips on all your stuff! ;) |

Haven't done anything for several days :( , it has been cold/wet/windy ! I went out yesterday and tried to start caulking , it was so windy I froze my butt off  I do know one thing , the soffits are doing their thing ! They are wide open at the moment but you can CLEARLY feel the air exchange/movement . So I am feeling good once I get all soffit vents in plus the insulated ceiling that the " attic " will vent very well . I did get some caulking done but hung up the towel pretty quick :D Supposed to be in the 60's by Wed. so hoping to get back on it then .
|
Nothing picture worthy but after 3 days of waiting I went out today to caulk the interior . Wind was howling the inside of the garage is a wind tunnel ! I caulked every seam/joint on the two long walls and about 85 % of the back wall , wife called for dinner so had to stop :D Tomorrow supposed to be much warmer so will finish the caulking and then put on the first coat of paint . While the weather is supposed to be rainy the next few days it will be in the 60's so I will get the painting done . I even took the time to caulk every outlet box and switch box along with the electric panel box I want this garage to be as tight as possible . I would like to think it will help with heat and AC . I'll post pics when the inside is painted .
|
OK now we're picture worthy :D Today was in the low 70's so I grabbed the paint and rollers and went at it . It took 1.5 gallons of semi-gloss so my remaining 1.5 gallons might squeak by for the 2nd coat tomorrow . I still have to do the two laminated beams on each long wall up top but trying to concentrate on just flat wall surface for now . It is looking much brighter with this coat of paint on the walls . Weather looking good for temps ( 60's + 70's ) for the rest of the week so I'm expecting to achieve greatness :D
So the plan is to get the 2nd coat of paint on the walls tomorrow and then Friday I will start with the metal wainscote on the bottom of the walls . That will free up some space in my basement and add some man cave pizzazz to the garage ! Here are some pics of today's progress . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522272384.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522272384.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522272384.jpg |
Woohoo I finished the second coat of wall paint today ! Looks like yesterday's pics only brighter :D It covered well so that portion is done . Went to local big box store and picked up PVC trim for the wainscote along with more caulk , screws , air nails etc. another 250.00 down the drain :( So tomorrow I start with the metal wainscote I'm hoping to have some pics tomorrow of that .
|
Now into the fun stuff how about some man cave bling ? :D I got two out of three walls done today with the galvanized wainscoting . Even the wife said " damn that looks good " ;) We have the grandchildren this weekend so not sure if I'll be able to complete the last wall or not . Here's two pics of today's progress .
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522439428.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522439428.jpg |
Hey guys Happy Easter ! Today I finished the metal wainscote on the right wall so it is now done . Tomorrow I'll install the cap trim and then will be 100 % done . I will now switch to framing up the floor pour for the compressor room . Had to peel off and mow the lawn , wash the Porsche and do some grilling so the day went quick . Hopefully I'll have something pic worth next week . SmileWavy
|
Today I finished the cap molding on the wainscoting so now that job is 100 % done . It feels good being at this stage of the build . The balance of my black metal switch plates/outlet covers was delivered today so got those installed also . They really pop against the white walls . Tomorrow I finish the door molding around the compressor room door opening and then will frame up for the floor pour of the compressor room . Pics coming soon I promise :D
|
Finally pic worthy :D Today I decided to offload the used two post lift I purchased last year . It's been sitting on my car trailer . Anyway my wife and I with the help of moving dollies , a car jack , a long 2 x 6 for leverage we were able to get both posts off without injury  . Here is a pic of the two posts and the top cap in the horizontal position in the garage , getting them upright will be the next challenge :D
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522790651.jpg |
About an hour after I posted my buddy sent me a text stating he could come over and help . The two of us were able to get both posts upright........ yeah ! :D And I'm able to wiggle them around by myself so I'll be able to position them where I want them . Today was a great day .
|
Today I ordered the lift install kit which consists of the bolts and shims . While I wait for that to arrive I decided to frame up the compressor room floor . Did some digging/leveling then framed it up with 2 x 6's . Filled in with some dirt then gravel . Hard to believe this 3 ' x 6 ' floor will take 800 lbs. of concrete but that's what the online estimator said . So I picked up ten 80 lb. bags of concrete mix along with some pre-cut rebar to pin to the existing floor . Weather is iffy for the next few days so not sure when I will pour but I am ready .
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522964271.jpg |
It's been rainy and cooler the past few days so haven't done anything . Weather looking good for Wed. and Thursday so will pour the concrete then . I met with a dirt/gravel guy last Friday for some driveway correction . We started talking about the man cave and my horse trading instincts kicked in :D . Bottom line is he's going to bring in a mini back hoe and clean up the three " walls " around the garage . This will make it much easier for me to do the retaining walls . We agreed on how much to cut back . All I will pay for is one day's machine rental , all his labor will be paid for by me giving him the dirt that was excavated from the original dig .
So I end up with a cleaner area to start my retaining wall , I get rid of TONS of dirt that I don't need and I kept the cost down by a pretty good amount . A win/win in my book . He's going to try and start this Thursday he believes two days to do the dig , fix the driveway and start pulling the dirt pile . I also received in the mail yesterday the shims and bolts to install the two post lift . It will be a little while until I install the lift , I was a " little off " when I set my floor concrete frame work so the top of the lift posts is a little higher than the bottom of the rafters  So now I will have to box a portion of the ceiling to allow the height , a set back but it is what it is . This is the fate of a DIYer vs. a pro I guess . The good news out of this is I did plan ahead just in case and positioned my concrete 9 " thick pads between rafters just in case I made a mistake . So I have the room for the boxed in ceiling , I just wish I didn't have to do it :D |
Another step forward, today was a chamber of commerce type day , low 70's sunny blue skies just perfect . So I gathered up the wheelbarrow , shovel , trowel and went to town on the compressor room floor . The online estimator said for a 3 ' x 6 ' x 4 " thick pad it would take ten 80 lb. bags . Hard to believe because it looks so small . But for once in my life I took the estimator at its word and purchased ten bags .
I was getting a little nervous after 8 bags poured because it was looking close . By the 10th bag I was scraping everything out of the wheelbarrow and I just made it ! The new pour is pinned to the existing floor so shouldn't have any issues with heaving/movement . Tomorrow I will figure out what I need for studs and go purchase . I'm hoping to have it enclosed by the end of the weekend . This is the last piece of the puzzle to get me 100 % weather tight . After this it is mostly interior work to complete . Stay tuned gentleman :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523492512.jpg |
Another beautiful day so tackled studding up the walls for the compressor room . Those are now done so tomorrows task will be to get plywood on the roof/walls and get them covered with house wrap and roofing felt before this weekends forecast of rain . I'm hoping the rain holds off as I'm not sure I can get everything done tomorrow :(
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523569592.jpg |
I still think you should dig that uphill dirt all the way around on both sides about 2-4ft down with a channel dropping downhill and fill with 3/4 compacted.
Then drill/punch down a bunch of steel pilings to hold up a solid retaining wall uphill. Cause 100 year rainstorms is gonna happen tomorrow. Then y'all are allowed to see me in my office. (cluck cluck ducking) That is very nice work sir. |
john70t I hear you but I do have a plan and it starts today . The " dirt guy " is supposed to be here today with a mini bucket machine . He will clean up all three sides to give me aprox. a 4 ' to 5 ' clearance all the way around to the building . When he gets that done and roughly level I will ask him to dig down about a foot and the width of his bucket , giving me a trench . That trench will be my starting point for the retaining walls .
I have made up my mind due to cost that I will go with pressure treated 6 x 6 x 8 ' as my wall material . I will put down a bed of small gravel and set the 6 x 6 onto that pinned with rebar into the ground . Flexible drain pipe will go around the perimeter exiting on both sides at the front of the garage . The 6 x 6's will be screwed to each other with offset seams and overlapped at the ends to the side walls . Dead mans will be positioned accordingly with all of the walls being back filled with # 57 gravel . Then between the building and the walls dirt will be filled in and slanted running away from the building towards the base of the walls . Then more # 57 gravel will be installed making my final walk surface . The dirt will be held down at least 3 " from any floor seam so even if it rains for 40 days and 40 nights there is room for a pond to form , which won't happen if I get all angles correct and natural flow to the front . |
OK the compressor room is now covered in plywood/roofing felt/house wrap ! It is supposed to start raining later today and I finished up around noon today . I still have to install the metal roof and metal siding plus some vents so the compressor can breath :D Yesterday the dirt guy did his thing around the garage , I now have about 6 ' of clearance on the two sides and about 5 ' on the back . I have some hand digging to do by the compressor room the mini back hoe just couldn't reach but it's not that much . I've pretty much decided on holding about a 4 ' walkway around that will leave room for gravel/dirt backfill along with drainage pipe and dead mans . Here's pics of yesterdays/today's progress .
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523728782.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523728782.jpg |
Man am I glad I got that room enclosed it is POURING rain !!! We were supposed to go to our grand daughters soccer game this afternoon I don't see that happening :( . I haven't looked yet but I'm sure my garage is surrounded on 3 sides by the red sea............ of red GA. clay :D I will go out later and see where I have any ponding but I think the grading is close . I think next week some time I will go rent some rolling scaffolding and get the radiant barrier stapled to the bottom of the perlons . I can't reach the peak safely with my ladders so scaffolding is needed . That's it for now . SmileWavy
|
We got a lot of rain yesterday and it has turned colder only 40 degrees at the moment . I'm happy to say the compressor room was bone dry when I checked it late yesterday . And the new dirt dig/grading is draining nicely with only minor ponding near the front . I have something I can work with now but need some consistent warm/dry weather . Hoping to have radiant barrier up this week .

Went to HD today and rented scaffolding it's the only way I can reach the peak of the rafters to install the radiant barrier . Like all projects it took MUCH longer than anticipated :D I have four 4 ' x 13 1/2 ' strips left to go in the morning and it's done . It was hotter then hell on that scaffolding today ! I'll take pics of the completed barrier tomorrow......... man am I sore all over :( I must have climbed up and down a thousand times . I'll be glad when this part is done , and for anyone doing this in the future install the radiant barrier BEFORE the garage doors/tracks ! Just more crap in the way .
|
It took 2 days but we are pic worthy :D Man I am one sore puppy but the job is 98 % done . I was working against the rental clock so decided to turn the scaffolding back in . All of the radiant barrier is stapled in place , but like my last garage I ripped some plywood strips to install over the stapled areas . Probably not needed but I did it anyway . So I got 90 % of the strips installed these were the ones I needed the scaffolding for . The balance I can do from my ladder .
So in the next few days I will work on installing the balance of the plywood strips . I'm using 1 5/8 " brads from an air nailer to put the plywood strips in place . I stretched the barrier as tight as I could but one man doing this is like fighting a 4 ' wide fly strip ! ;) Based on my last garage I know this barrier makes a big difference and I had it laying around anyway so a no brainer . So here are two pics of the sea of silver :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1524173507.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1524173507.jpg |
I haven't touched the garage as I came down with the flu :( I'm one sick puppy . It started on Monday I'm now just starting to turn for the better but still have a few days to go . Glad I'm retired and can rest as needed but this sucks !

No doubt working on a toilet is the worst. What should be a 20 minute project will take 4 trips to the hardware store, and a virtual gut of the bathroom, at least when I do it. You will have a great toy box when you are done. We all are jealous! One of my friends bought a 1,200 sq foot house with a 4,000 square workshop in the back yard. He does knife making, and tinkers on all sorts of projects out there. |
Went to the doc today confirmed it is the flu but say's I'm at the tail end of it . Gave me a prescription for a Z pack so started taking that today . I feel like walking death :(
|
Hey guys I'm still alive :D Man this flu knocked me on my a$$ ! :( The weather was nice today so I installed the metal roof on the compressor room so that is done . I also put drip edge on all 3 sides before putting the metal roof panels down . All I have left is to purchase a trim piece of metal to transition from the vertical siding to the roof .
Tomorrow will be a mix of working on one of my JD tractors to get ready for mowing and starting to install the metal siding on the compressor room . The weather is supposed to be great all week so I should get the compressor room 100 % done on the exterior . I didn't take any pics of the roof it's really no big deal but my lungs were huffing and puffing I am not 100 % yet from this flu  I guess I'll just power through ! :D |
Hey guys I am working on the garage just nothing pic worthy . Today I finished all the " vents " for the compressor room . I have vents on all three walls up at the top that are shielded by the roof overhang . Plus I used louvered vents so should keep any rain/bugs out and provide enough air for the compressor to run properly . I installed the J molding along the top so tomorrow I start installing the metal siding .
When I complete the compressor room on the exterior I will then do the interior , main goal will be soundproofing . Once the compressor room is done I have to get back to the " notched ceiling " for the 2 post lift , it is a show stopper for me . I finally have it in my head how to do it just a matter of execution . While I am retired and have all the time in the world with the warmer/nicer weather my mind wanders and I just want to drive the Porsche :D Have to stay disciplined to get this done !!!! |
Vents at the bottom as well as the top for the a/c room?
