Electrician showed up today , worked a few hours then lunch . He has to go exchange one 220 breaker because I need a 60 amp for the old grey buzz box :D . All outlet boxes are mounted , all holes drilled and breaker box is mounted . Have to run internal wiring then turn to the trench . That is going to be messy the ground is saturated . Oh yeah rained like crazy this morning :( . Hopefully we'll be done today .
Siding guy showed up with his son to go over the job , unfortunately I was in the basement so didn't get to talk with them . So not sure if they are a go for tomorrow or not . The electrician knows the siding guy and they chatted , he said something about the mud may hold the guys off for a bit . Oh well it is what it is . |
Hey guys in about an hour day TWO of the ONE DAY install will begin  To be fair the electrician has done a very clean install so I'm not complaining . All internal wiring is installed and nailed into place . All wiring that goes from inside to outside ( outlet/flood light/entry light/compressor room/mini split ) he just coiled up for me so I can terminate once the siding is on . I did it this way so I can make sure each one will land on a flat portion of the metal siding vs. a ribbed section .
Did the same for my ceiling lights and ceiling receptacles for cord reel work lights as I don't have a ceiling yet :D . So this morning will all be about digging the trench and running the conduit/wiring from the house to the garage . So far it's not raining ;) and hopefully that will continue for the day . It still will be a muddy mess . The goal is to be done with electric today so I can move on . The exterior aluminum trim is due to deliver today per the UPS tracking . Had a text volley with the siding guy last night his plan is to start on Saturday so I have tomorrow to get the trim up around the garage doors . I didn't ask him how long he thinks it would take to complete but I'd like to think just a few days . I will then terminate all exterior electrical wiring ( except compressor room ) . I plan on going to purchase the fiberglass insulation on Friday as long as its not raining . I will complete the interior of the front garage door wall by running wiring for the sensors , insulating , installing plywood and painting white so I will be ready when the garage doors come in which should be next week . That will get me weather tight other than the compressor room door opening . I am going to map out on the house wrap where I want the siding guys to stop for the compressor room . Basically it will be 6 ' from the outside corner but I need to figure out where I want them to stop for the roof line . I just need to visualize and give them a horizontal line it's no big deal . They will leave me enough siding/flashing/outside corners to complete once I get the room poured/built . I am very excited to be this close to completion . |
OK we are now in character strengthening mode :D Got a call at 9:00 from electrician he came out to his truck this morning and big puddle of anti freeze ! He was staying with a relative who also has a truck and they are transferring tools and on their way . His Ditch Witch and all the conduit are already at my house he left that trailer here yesterday .
So he just got here we chatted for a few minutes and walked to the trailer to get the DW off............ you guessed it he left the key for the DW in his truck !!!! So he just left to go get the key and will be back........ you can't make this stuff up  |
Yep, that's why we call in the pros, to get things done professionally, ugh.
I came across yet another idea for your retaing wall. I found a CL. Listing for Pileings. A local company is rebuilding some covered boat sheds and sold me some of the old pileings. They are 20' long and in pretty good condition for use in building polebarn and supporting the outer side of a carport that I'm planning. I'm excited about having material that will really resist the bugs in the ground around here. The material treated for marine use is far better treated than what is available at the lumber yard and was a good bargain to boot. Less Than $50 per pole, delivered. I'm thinking that if you could find some around there, you could cut some short sections to put in the ground then stack some behind them and pin them with rebar or something. Then fill behind them with gravel. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1519321871.jpg You could look around for a marine salvage co or dock building co. The guy I got mine from has more stashed at his place from other jobs. Cheers Richard |
Day two of the one day install is now complete :D heading into day three tomorrow :( . So after this mornings debacle we recovered and had zero issues with the ditch witch . It cut a perfect trench and we didn't hit anything explosive or worth millions :D . So the line from the house to the garage is now in the ground in 2 " plastic conduit . It is hooked up on the garage side just needs to be hooked up in the house........... where he purchased the wrong breaker
So he called around and found someone that has the right breaker so he's picking it up tomorrow morning . Just need two wires hooked up , pop in the breaker and some wire cleanup in the basement and we're done ! Tevake thanks for the tip I will keep that in mind . To be honest I was looking at telephone poles for sale on CL but I have no way to handle the damn things ! I'm REALLY hoping this electrical install is behind me by tomorrow around noon because I was planning on picking up the insulation tomorrow . So I'm going to be installing the aluminum trim tomorrow morning ( it arrived today ) , pay the electrician and hopefully make it to pick up the insulation which is 1.5 hours away . Siding guys still planning on showing up Saturday so balls to the wall ! :D |
Touch down !!! We have power :D . Yep the job is done and I am a happy camper . Actually paid him a little extra to troubleshoot some inoperable floodlights . So now that is checked off the list and paid for . I installed the aluminum trim around the garage doors so that's done . Got a call from the siding guy he may not start until Monday . So overall not a bad day .
Unfortunately was not able to pick up the insulation today so that bites , may have to bite the bullet and buy one roll from box store so I can enclose the front . That way I can let the garage door guy know he's up ;) Also want to frame up the floor for the compressor room and get that filled in with dirt/gravel and ready to hand pour . I'm sure the weekend will go by quick . Will post pics when something worth showing happens :D |
Today I decided to go caulk crazy :D Caulked the bottom plates to the concrete , bottom plates to PVC trim board , backside of Z flashing and EVERY horizontal seam of the plywood . Even though I have house wrap I decided while it's open and accessible why not . Went through 11 tubes of caulk . Tomorrow it's time for the Great Stuff foam treatment I have a few areas that are too small for conventional insulation . Hopefully Monday will still be a go for the siding guys so we can get this building even more weather tight .
|
Dude,
You are producing an incredible amount of work, great job, it will be done in no time. Rutager |
Woke up this morning to the sound of pouring rain  I gotta be honest I am really sick of all this fu$#%ing rain !!!! It has stopped and is now just sprinkling on and off when it wants to . After it stopped pouring I went out and shot up two cans of Great Stuff foam in various cracks/voids . I sent a text to the siding guy letting him know to bring waders tomorrow  . Not sure they will be able to work in the slop and it's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow.......... depressing :( . But we'll take it a day at a time and keep knocking down the list of items to complete .
|
So woke up this morning and it's raining :( So I decided to run to the local feed store and picked up 3 bales of hay . On the drive back it stopped raining . I waded through the mud and put down 2 bales . That stuff really worked quite well to make the perimeter easy to walk on . Siding guys showed up late they had to swing by the factory to pick all the material up . Fortunately no rain during the day :)
They are about 90 % done they will finish tomorrow . They have four more panels to install and then the top trim and outside corners . I think it looks great , very clean nothing fancy. Tomorrow is supposed to be good weather so after they are done I'm going to go pick up the insulation . Have to do it tomorrow because the rest of the week is supposed to.......... wait for it.........wait.........fuc&%$ing RAIN !!! I'll post pics of the siding when it's done . Also got a call today from the garage door guy my doors are now in . I told him I hope to be ready for him next week . Overall another positive made progress day . |
Well we can check off another box the siding is done . Actually I have some tweeks to do but the siding guys are done . I have to finish above the garage doors and the compressor room walls once they are built . And the left side top trim needs some love , when I installed the wall studs I didn't pay close enough attention to the top plate in relationship to the laminated beam . So on the left side I have to " fill in " almost 1.5 " at the base of the trim and then drive in screws . Sounds bad but really no big deal . I really like how it looks . Here are some pics from today .

Looks great! I'm surprised the siding guys didn't suggest a fascia board and soffit. It looks like the truss ends are still open in the pics.
Keep up the good work. Building this time of year seems to be a challenge no matter where you're building. |

Beautiful day today so I decided to do the road trip to purchase the insulation . Round trip was 159 miles but my diesel pickup ( kong the 4x4 dually ) needed a long trip anyway as it has set a bit . Anyway purchased enough R19 Kraft faced to do all the walls , the compressor room and the ceiling for $550.00 not bad . I only burned 1/4 tank of diesel .
So tomorrow I attack the inside of the front wall , will terminate/install the one exterior outlet and the double floodlight . Run all the sensor wires for the garage door openers , install the insulation and start cutting/installing the interior plywood . My goal is to have the first coat of paint on the front wall by Monday . A 2nd coat on Tuesday and it's ready for the garage doors . Everyone that has seen the garage so far including the mailman today say's they like it so that makes me feel good . It will be nice to start posting interior pics :D |
When doing the insulation, wear some latex gloves and one of those disposable, full body suits, otherwise you're gonna be scratching for a year.

The overhang of the roofing metal will work better with 1x vs. 2x at least that is what the pole barn installers stated . But I will hold up a piece of 2x and see for myself . How much overhang of the roof metal is needed to flow well into the gutters ? I know the gutters are basically flat on the back side and install pretty much flush with the fascia . Unfortunately I have already purchased all the fascia metal with the 3/4 " backset/bottom lip so using 2x might look a little funky .
|
Today I started the day with terminating and installing the outside duplex outlet and dual flood light holder . Then moved to the AC/heat disconnect box . Got all that done with no electro shock therapy :D so then moved to the garage door sensors . I cut pieces of plywood maybe 2 ' tall for each end wall and the center wall for the front . Drilled a hole in each and ran the sensor wires . Tomorrow I will cut and install the R19 insulation and start enclosing the front . Weather was great high 50's and sunny tomorrow to be more of the same . That's it for now .
|
Today was another nice day so I started with insulating the front wall . I quickly remembered what a pain in the a$$ cutting fiberglass insulation was  . But got it done but then realized I needed to " box in " the center section above the garage doors so it would be strong enough for the garage door spring mounts . So that took me off course a little but got that done also . I now have plywood installed on all three front walls up to the horizontal portion above the garage doors . Tomorrow I'll cut three pieces of plywood and it will be done . I think I can get one coat of primer on tomorrow and maybe one coat of paint . If not it will spill over into Tuesday . I'm liking this retirement gig :D
|
Had a good day today with a slight hiccup :D . I finished installing the plywood on the front garage door wall , cleaned up a little then went into the basement to get the wall primer.............. couldn't find it ! So off to Home Depot we go to pick up a 2 gallon bucket of Kilz and while there picked up an outside light for the entry door . Got home and put one coat of primer on . While it was dry to the touch in about 30 minutes I'll let it dry overnight to be safe .
Tomorrow supposed to be off and on rain but I'll get the first coat of white semi-gloss on that wall . While that is drying I will start working on extending the length of the door sensor wires . Picked up some bell wire today while at HD along with some shrink tubing . I just realized today that I have to run the sensor wires over to where I want the wall switches for the door openers . And to be able to terminate the wires I need plywood installed there also . And it has to be painted !!! I received a text from the garage door installer saying he will show up early next week so I have time to get all of this done . I will continue to install wall insulation and plywood until I'm done . I will say seeing that front wall done with primer on it brought a smile to my face......... I can feel that I'm getting closer . |

https://www.leafguard.com/why-its-better They're the best at this no-clog gutter thing and you know you don't want to be cleaning out gutters at this stage of your life... it's just not worth the risk. Throw a few extra dollars at this now and be glad you did for the life of the building. They run specials all the time like free installation, buy-X-feet-and-get-X-feet-free, etc. |
In the FAQ:
What is the Englert LeafGuard Guarantee? The Englert LeafGuard gutter system is guaranteed not to clog with leaves, pine needles, or other organic debris as long as you own your home or your installing contractor will clean or repair it for free. |
Man it rained here until just before 1:00 !!! But right when it stopped I gathered up my paint , tray and roller and went at it . I did this mainly because the weather forecast for the next few days is sunny but only in the 40's . Not sure how well latex paint dries at those temps . I rolled on one coat and had enough out of a partial can to get a 2nd coat on most of it .
Tomorrow I will extend the wires for the door sensors and do the insulation around the entry door . Then start cutting/installing the plywood so I can terminate the sensor wires . Need to get that primed/painted before garage door guy shows up . I think I'm on good pace to be ready for the garage door install but weather could quickly bite my butt :D I haven't thought about gutters or guards yet because I'm planning on doing those later in the build . But good suggestion to consider the gutter guards . |
Hey guys another update hopefully someone is still following along :D So last night/this morning it was quite chilly I waited until 9:30 when it had warmed up to 36 degrees  . Anyway I decided to take advantage of the cold weather and start installing wall insulation . Less itchy with a coat on ;) It went much quicker than I anticipated I'm about 90 % done and will finish the rest tomorrow . This is the first time I've ever used Johns Manville brand fiberglass insulation and it seems to be pretty good stuff .
I figured 6 bundles for the walls and I'm just opening the 6th bundle so right on course . The balance that I purchased will go in the ceiling . I think there is a good chance by the end of next week the interior will have all the plywood installed . Plus the garage doors will be installed so then I can concentrate on getting the interior painted . The installation of the ceiling and ceiling lights will be last . Here are some pics of today's progress . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1520551924.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1520551924.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1520551924.jpg |
Lookin good!
|
I always open to find out your progress. Keep going!
|
Another good day it started out cold ( mid 30's ) but sunny so it quickly warmed up . I'm basically done with the insulation . I left one cavity open up front on each side so the garage door installer can finagle the wiring to the door openers as needed . Also left two cavities open on each side of the doorway that will lead to compressor room so I can adjust the wiring for a light and the compressor . Other than that it's done .
The weekend is supposed to rain but I'm hoping to start with the interior plywood . I think I will start with the back wall first as the concrete floor is level side to side . The two side walls my starter piece of plywood I will have to taper to match the floor pitch towards the garage doors . I want to do that so the pieces of plywood will be level and it will make it easier for me to stack the next rows . I also cleaned up the sensor wires and ran the wires for the touch pads for the door openers . I am now 100 % ready for the garage door install set for next week . Friday is date night with the spousel unit so I'm off for some grub and cocktails :D |
Sounds like good progress... enjoying the updates.
Any day now, you'll tell us you put a radio and one of your favorite folding sports chairs out there and enjoyed a beer or two as you surveyed the majesty of it all. :) |

Another good day of progress with the start of installing plywood on the rest of the interior . Started on the back wall at the bottom and got the first row done . Took my time measuring/notching around the outlets and the window . Everything level and looks good . I was going to go to the next row on the back wall but wanted to start using the already painted plywood for that and of course that is at the BOTTOM of the stack ! So instead of handling the plywood multiple times I just kept going on the left wall at the bottom .
I figured out the taper in the floor and made angle cuts to the bottom of each piece of plywood . Just like the exterior I am installing the plywood horizontally . Also had to notch for wall outlets so fairly time consuming for this one man band :D I have one piece left to go on the left side . If I can work at the same pace tomorrow the first bottom row will be done 100 % all the way around . It started raining about 2:00 and by 3:00 was raining so hard I couldn't hear my radio so I called it a day . I am holding the plywood 1/2 " off the concrete just thought that was the right thing to do . After the garage doors are installed I will then caulk the gap between the plywood and the concrete . That will be my " back up " to the caulking of the sill plate that I have already done . When I go to install the metal wainscote I will probably run that right down to the floor . That's it for today off to my grand daughters birthday party........... she's 8 ! |
I'm enjoying watching your steady progress. Except It brings into focus how little Im getting done on my own shop rebuild. It seems each time that I dig deeper to get to where I can go forward, it uncovers more issues of condition or bad build to begin with.
My brother and I now joke about there being a good slab. Still you are plugging away moving ever closer to completion, well done. Happy B-Day to the Granddaughter. |
Glad to hear you held plywood off the floor.
|
Woke up this morning it was raining like crazy :( Decided to take the grandchildren out for breakfast instead :D I just wasn't feeling it today , will get back on it tomorrow . Besides my hands/arms were feeling the pain from driving so many screws . Did some quick math I'll be at a little over 3000 screws driven on this project by the time I'm done........... yikes !
|
Today was my first real crappy day of building I guess I was due :D I started with the last piece of plywood on the left side to complete the first row . That went fine no issues . So now the left side and back wall have the first row of plywood installed . So now I turn my attention to the right side . Looking things over and knowing garage door guy coming fairly soon ( confirmed Wed . ) I decide to work around the breaker box . As it turns out the breaker box is near where I'm going to have the two garage door opener touch pads and four wall switches and a duplex outlet ! Quite a bit of figuring/measuring/cutting but not that hard ;) So I dive in ............ start making all kinds of measurements , draw all kinds of lines and start cutting . I cut out for all this crap and go to line it up on the wall and I'm off in several areas  Yep I fuc%$ed up !
But I was close enough that I used this first piece as my template for the next attempt . I made adjustments and the 2nd piece fit like a glove :D But it took me all friggen day to do  Tomorrow I will continue with the plywood install on the right side , in my mind the worst is behind me . If on this entire job the worst thing I do is screw up one piece of plywood I'll be happy :D It is definitely harder using plywood vs. sheet rock for finite cutting or at least it is for me . But the 2nd attempt has all the openings for the switches and outlets cut close enough so the covers will cover as needed . The breaker box cover fits perfect if I do say so myself :D I am going to push hard to be done with all interior plywood by the end of this week . |
Today was a better day ;) I finished installing the first row of plywood on the right side of the garage , all three walls now have first row installed . I then went to the back wall and almost completed the 2nd row of plywood so overall a good day . And I didn't screw anything up :D . I received a text from the garage door guy confirming he's a go for tomorrow morning . So by COB tomorrow I expect to have both garage doors installed with functioning door openers . I'll post pics tomorrow if all goes as planned . It is supposed to get down to mid 30's tonight so it will be a chilly day tomorrow :(
|
I've screwed up more than a few drywall cuts, it happens. Good work, almost there.
|
Today was the scheduled garage door install , it was low 30's and WINDY !!! Man it was cold this morning but the guys were here a little after 7:00 . Four hours later they pulled out of the driveway they were 100 % done . I think the doors look great and the shaft mounted Chamberlain door openers are whisper quiet and smooth :D I am really glad I went with that style of opener . Everything went as planned there were no surprises which is good . Weatherstripping is nice and tight and the entire job just looks great I'm quite happy with it . Tomorrow supposed to be near 60 so I'll get back to the plywood install tomorrow . Here is a pic of the doors .
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521042516.jpg |
Pretty heavy frost this morning :( but I'll be heading out to the garage soon . I wanted to add from yesterday's garage door install that with the 10 ' tall doors the " standard height " track is only a little over 10 " from the bottom of the rafters . So nice and tight to the ceiling just like I wanted . And I really like the commercial track they used vs. standard homeowner grade . Thicker metal overall and where the tracks bolt to the wall instead of individual brackets it is one continuous L shaped piece of metal . Much stronger and looks good to . And just by dumb luck :D the ends of the tracks ended up right under a roof rafter so they were able to just use one piece of angle iron to support each end rail . Very clean looking and will be simple to notch the metal panels around that I will use for my finished ceiling . Last nice detail is the nylon door rollers vs. metal they are whisper quiet .
So the goal for today is to finish installing plywood on the back wall and then I'll either turn right or left :D and continue on . It is supposed to warm up to 60 so that will feel wonderful !!! |
Looks great, but isn’t that the way it goes, right after you get it all closed up the weather turns nice!
