genealogy study, tracing ancestors

Started checking into this Jean-e-ology stuff recently (genealogy for the rest of you).

Lots of stuff already out there.
Went back 7 generations and found a common ancestor to Al Gore jr. the enviro-liar.
Quote:
Henry Gore Sr
10 Sep 1736 - 20 Apr 1791
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex, Colony of Virginia

Went back 9 generations and found the first of my ancestors to come to this country:

Quote:
John Gore (1634 - 1673)
Born 1634 in Waltham Abbey, Essex, England

Son of Paul Gore Jr. and Rhoda (Gardner) Gore

Husband of Margaret (Ascough) Gore — married 1660 in Lancaster County, Virginia, USA
DESCENDANTS
Father of Joseph Gore Sr. and Henry Gore
Died 1673 in Middlesex County, Virginia, USA

His father was:

Quote:
Sir Paul Gore, 1st Baronet (1567 – September 1629) was an Anglo-Irish politician, soldier and baronet.

Born in London, he was the eldest son of Gerard Gore and his wife Helen Davenant, daughter of Ralph Davenant.
Gore had come to Ireland as a commander of a troup of horse and in 1602, he was dispatched to accompany Rory Ó Donnell to a meeting with Queen Elizabeth I of England.
He sat as Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons for Ballyshannon from 1613 until 1615.
On 2 February 1622, he was created a baronet, of Magherabegg, in the County Donegal.

He married Isabella Wycliffe, daughter of Francis Wycliffe and niece of the 1st Earl of Strafford.
They had thirteen children, seven daughters and six sons.
Gore was buried at the Abbey Church of Donegal.
His eldest son Ralph succeeded to the baronetcy and was ancestor of the Earl of Ross.
His son Arthur was himself created a baronet and was ancestor of the Irish creation of the Earls of Arran, the Barons Harlech as well as the Irish Barons Annaly.
His fourth son Francis was progenitor of the Gore-Booth Baronets.
Cool stuff.

If anyone goes back far enough they will likely find a royal. I had to go back 9 generations in just one line. The number of “cousins” is enormous.

Watch out, it's addictive. I have about 1200 people in my tree. I've accounted for about 91% of where everyone came from. It goes back to about 1300 AD.

My first ancestors to arrive were in 1608 at Jamestown and then a couple families on the Mayflower.

Th Swiss keep incredibly good records. They had a scan of my 11th great grandfathers will among other stuff.

My brother is big into this. He has been successful tracing our father's side of the family, all the way back to the town in Alsace that our family emigrated from. He even found the name of the ship they came on, in 1739. We went to the town a couple of years ago. There is a church with monuments to the dead and missing from the last two wars. Our family name is all over them.
Not much luck tracing my mother's side. There seems to be English and French and one period between 1850 and 1900 when there was a bunch of Old Testament names in one branch. Hmmm.

I got about as far as I could in a reasonable amount of time on Ancestry dot com. Anyone hire a pro to dig deeper?

If you dig deep enough you might find an occasional unwanted child who is now an adult. That is the upside or downside depending how they turned out.

A seventh great-grandmother born in North Carolina in 1718, died in North Carolina in 1815 and think wow, 97 years living through some of the most incredible parts of American history..

And then you find the 1810 US census which shows her household consisting of herself and 10 slaves... and then you find her will dated 1815 which deals almost entirely of exactly what is to be done with her slaves which includes sending some of them to family members in Tennessee and selling some of the others.

Not really what one hopes to find but it is what it is as they say ....

Family trees branch out so fast the further one goes back. I followed my last name back 9 generations and stopped. My mom's grandfather was in the land run and homesteaded 160 acres, and bought some neighbors out so he had a large spread near Driftwood, OK. He was a renowned speaker but he was a card carrying socialists. It even has stamps where he attended meetings.

My Mom's fathers side had a letter from one great uncle that lived in north Texas. Some thieves came through and stole a horse. He went after them and got the horse back, but the thief's brother was the Sheriff so my relative was jailed. His friends broke him out of jail and he moved to the Oklahoma territory. His house was attacked by Indians once.

I had a quilt that my great great grandmother had from her grand mother, and a letter about how she made it for her. I gave that to one of my female cousins that has daughters. So she has a quilt from a great grandmother with a lot of extra greats in there and she will pass it to her daughters and they already have daughters.

I already am familiar with my genealogy. On one side, no records past about 150 years ago, on the other back about 400 years.

So far I've verified 17 generations going back to 1460 in Wiltshire England.

Here's an interesting clip from "Notes and Queries"
Oxford University Press, 1902

ka-nigits, (Knights), Barons, aldermen, sheriff, Lord mayor of London ....

Usually people trace back their family name. Which is fun. But as others have pointed out, it is only a very small fraction of your genetic make up. 2 to the power of generation is the number of pairs that you came from. So, 30 generations back, say 750 years that is 2^30 > 1 billion. No wonder the king of England is always in there.

If you read more, of course you can't have 1 billion unique ancestors. Your family tree may have less branches than you think.

I could care less where I come from - I care where I am now and where I'm going! I'm a mutt (claim no particular nationality / lineage per se other than "American") and know the history going back about 3-4 generations but beyond that no idea (and doesn't really matter anyway IMHO). My aunt was big into all this and put most of it together.

British society is one where everyone has some title for this or that anyway, so it's not terribly impressive unless it's "HRH", and even then...

The Mormons are hyper-obsessed with this stuff so if you want a good resource, talk to them. Seriously.

Exact opposite here. When I came from and the kind of people they were can (emphasis on can) inform your life. My ancestors were Alsacian farmers, staid, strict, thrifty, rather insular and conservative people. That describes every member of my father's family except my father. My grandmother was almost impulsively neat, and so was my father. I visited the town the family emigrated from and the whole town was as clean and neat as my kitchen.
I don't really care about the names of the people I descend from or what titles they have, but I am interested in the kind of people they were.

+1 for this. They have a site - familysearch.org, lots of records digitized, lots of other people's family trees already entered. So if you work back a couple of generations you'll likely encounter a distant cousin who has already done a lot of work for you. Some of the trees on there are imported from older files, and some of the information is wrong. If you really want some wrong information for free, try rootsweb.ancestry.com, which is the free side of ancestry.com.

I had a relative, his grandfather and my great-grandfather were brothers who came to Wisconsin in the late 1800's, and he went back to Germany and traced our family's roots quite extensively, wrote a book about it and included the tree in the book. If you're lucky you'll run into someone like that in your family. Or you could end up like my fiance, she had the wrong maiden name for her maternal grandmother, and even with the right name I'm still unsure of her parents, I need to talk to one of her brothers, she's the baby of the family and her next oldest brother is 10 years older than her, her oldest 1/2 brother is over 20 years older than her.

Now I haven't done this, but supposedly if you go to a Church of Latter Day Saints family center, you can use their computers and have access to Ancestry.com, fold3, and other genealogy sites that you would normally have to pay for. I've been meaning to do this, just haven't found the time.
