living with a car from an out of business car company?

i'm not thinking of a vintage Datsun roadster..or International Scout.

i'm talking recent closures. Saab..?

yesterday, at the gas station filling up my wife's car, i heard a big rowdy V8 pull up behind me..i was doing mental guesses and turned around. What is that? i had to take a second look..it was a Pontiac G8..badges removed. screaming orange with black stripes.

GM still supporting these cars.? are parts impossible? what happens to the resale value?

it was a nice car.

Yes, GM is still supporting Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Pontiac.

Hey if you really want an orphan car, just get a new Viper. It is real practical!

Between remaining OEM stock, aftermarket, and used parts online, I wouldn’t hesitate to own another Saab. Don’t kid yourself, many older cars from existing and profitable makes are no longer supported by the OEM. Porsche is unique in that they do a great job of supporting the classics, albeit at a hefty markup.

If you can find a Saab 9-3X they are cool. Haldex AWD, very sweet system. They imported very few of them sadly. IMO if Saab had brought out AWD in the mid 1990's when the then new Audi A4's were flying off dealer lots like crazy they might still be in business.

The last 9-5, 2010 model, is very nice but I might be afraid to own one b/c it was basically a one year only model and many electronics.

Asking prices on the G8 seem to be all over the map when I just looked, not sure what the real values are.

I had a neighbor that flipped his G8 into the trees, confidence>talent.

At least he didn't go roof first into the trees like another wreck on the same road.

DeLorean parts are relatively easy: https://www.delorean.com/

I've got an '85 Saab 900 SPG, and while parts sourcing for this car is certainly not like doing so for a newer, fully-supported car, it is reasonable. A large and helpful enthusiast-owner community always helps for cars like this. That said, my car doesn't need much and I've only had it 6 months.

interesting topic. I had looked at a fisker karma that was a new leftover. wondered if I would be left in a bad way despite how cool the car was.

instead, I just bought the new 510 hp alfa romeo. wonder if they will survive in the US? the car is stunning and quided missile fast...but I have not seen one Quadrifoglio on the road other than mine.

They're trying to do a limited production of new cars, they have more than enough parts to make a bunch of cars. Saw a vid not long ago, should be on YT.

When I was growing up my uncle had a 1937 Graham Cavalier. I remember he was always looking for parts for it. Fortunately he had another car to drive most of the time.

just saw a late model Saab broken down on the side of the road two days ago.

that is a brand I will never own. being different for the sake of being different doesn't make sense to me.

agree the Pontiac with big motor is neat. Dodge has some stuff like that.

My 5 Saabs were alot like my VWs...they always started, ran and drove and got you from point A to B no problem (and fun w/ the turbos), but the ancillary stuff was always broken (switches, buttons, plastic bits, seat heaters, sunvisors, A/C, etc). I never had engine/drivetrain problems, it was always little annoying stuff. I credit my Saabs for making me a good recreational mechanic.

I have a 2009 Saab 9.3 AWD Aero wagon. Great car. No problem getting parts and have a good mechanic that gives me good service and good prices. This car is almost at 100k miles and not sure how long I am going to keep it. There really is not much else I am interested in and although there are some nice SUVs they are quite pricey. Most of the new cars I look at just seem cheap.
