Nice Craig's List score
We are putting a gas cook top and electric oven in our new house. Replacing the free-standing 30" range with a 36" cook top. We have a Bosch in our current house that we are very happy with and wanted another one. The 36" version is $999 on sale at Lowes (link is to 30" version).

Had to drive an hour to get it, but saved $$$. I thought I could have a section of stainless steel counter top made that would allow me to use the cook top with the existing counter top and it would look like the top of a regular stove. I sent a place that makes custom stainless steel counters a sketch of what I wanted. The estimate was ridiculous - $1770 for a 39 inch section of counter. We can replace the entire laminate counter top with quartz for not much more $$. The laminate is kind of cheesy, so I'm not unhappy about replacing it. I have a guy who hand makes custom cabinets to make drawers to fit under the counter top. ![]() This is the space the old 30" stove came out of. ![]() Sketch of a stainless counter top that would accommodate the counter top - $1770 bucks!

![]() This is the stove we are replacing. Glass top electric. I lived with one of these for 15 years and hated it. You have to get on your knees to see what's in the oven. I have no idea what the guy who designed this was thinking.

The designer liked to watch his wife bend over to put things in and get things out of the oven?

Changing the laminate would be a nice upgrade. It always amazes me when I get bids/estimates for work. It seems like people in business aren't hesitant at all about giving you an estimate they want to retire on (or not saying they want the work). Went through the same thing with cabinet makers not too long ago. I decided I didn't like my trash compactor & wanted to replace it with a pull out bin, so I just needed a cabinet face made. Most places wouldn't even talk to me about it. I finally found a place that made it for $75 with me doing the staining & finish - which I preferred to do.

What kind of lens / camera did you use to take that photo? The single point perspective and depth illusion is really interesting.

It was a Nikon 50-??mm zoom cranked in to 50mm.
I've been working on the kitchen and media room remodels for about 2 weeks now. It's an 85 mile daily commute to work on the place and I am exhausted. It looked so perfect at first, but just the "little" changes we wanted to make are actually major. The kitchen sink was awful so we are replacing it with a farmhouse sink. The ground floor bedroom and bathroom were completely superfluous, so we are taking out the bathroom and expanding the bedroom into a media (TV) room. By the time I drive an hour there, work 8 hours, and drive an hour home I am more tired that I was when I worked for a living. ![]() The old sink was ugly and not very functional. ![]() New farmhouse sink is in position. This is hopefully the low point of the remodel. Countertops have been removed (they are just sitting there in this photo). Everything is torn all to h e ll, but new cabinets under the sink and under the new gas cooktop are under construction.
