Stink Bugs

They have been in our house for the past three winters. Talked to neighbors who have seen a huge increase in their numbers in their homes in the past few winters. I never had them in my house until about 3 years ago. They are completely brainless, just random motion and crashing into things, random landing wherever. The don't hurt anything, don't bite, just randomly fall in your drink or show up on your toothbrush. The only hint that they are sentient in any way is if something frightens them they emit an acrid, really unpleasant odor. The best way to get rid of one is carefully slip a piece of paper under it and throw it outside before it becomes alarmed. You can crush it in a wad of paper towels, but you end up with a fist full of stinking paper. Is the recent increase in them local or do any Pelicans have them too?



They are about 1/2 inch long and make a low buzzing sound when they fly - and stink like h e 11 if you scare them.

That is a picture of a brown marmorated stink bug. They are not harmless. Those are an invasive pest from Asia destroying all kinds of fruits and vegetables at an alarming rate. A serious problem developing as their number has increased literally exponentially for the last couple years.

I have never seen one.....until moved to Ohio....about 3 years ago! No joke. We have them too.

Oddly, they don't bug me.

Same thing happened up here for the last couple years.
I use wet toilet paper and do my part to get 'em all.

Must be loss of predator, expanded range due to some circumstance, or chemtrail effect.

Crazy...showed up in our house this winter...just the same behavior you posted. Had no idea they were invasive from Asia. Have vacuumed, finger flicked, scooped up and swatted hundreds so far this year. We live in the mountains of north Georgia.

Well, at least no one from California has reported seeing them. Those poor people. If I was out there stink bugs would would be the last straw for me.

Yep, have them as well, and do not ever remember seeing them, up till a few years ago.

Yes it seems this past year there has been alot more of them. But there was a lack of bees so im not complaining lol

I first got them 4 years ago at a fly-in at Woodruff, SC. They found ways into the RV. Went from there to California for the yearly visit. They seemed to disappear at the high heat and elevation of I-10. After a couple of weeks in SoCal, they reappeared. Once back in Alabama, they froze for the winter, but were back in the spring. Didn't see them for years until this last fall. Has been a deep freeze here for 3 weeks, they are gone again.

The ones here in MI have some brown coloring on their shells.
They survive temps to almost freezing and then head for the base of evergreens around the house.
First thaw..they are back out.

Got em here too. Couple years ago, never had any. Last year we had a couple dozen in the basement. This year, hundreds. A month ago I vacuumed the basement (we keep it sparse with just a washer and dryer). Every time I'm down there doing laundry, I find 20 more. No idea where they come in at or how they survived outside the last 2 weeks of <0 temps but they are fricken everywhere!

My folks had them in VA a few years ago. They were coming in through the vents on the roof. My dad added a much finer mesh and it really helped keep them out.

We have them in NJ. They get into the attic, but the spiders take care of them. My understanding is if you crush them the stink attracts more.

We have them everywhere in Michigan. They seem to be able to get in through the fireplace or any small crack in a window or door. The best way I’ve found to dispose of them is to place a jug of water mixed with a little liquid soap below them and let them fall in. They drown quickly and don’t emit the stench they do if you smash them.

We've had them in small numbers, outside, only have seen a few in the house but in the summer. This year it was terrible. I have a fairly large garden. I went out one Saturday morning and was looking at the garden from the deck, over by my watermelons all I could see was black, no green melons. I went over there and the entire plant, vine, flowers and melons were covered in stink bugs. They covered my melons, honeydews, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers. The entire plant. I tried spraying them with water mixed with detergent, insecticidal soap, and any insecticide I had. Nothing killed them. Out of options i took my large shop vac, filled it with detergent and water and sucked them into the shop vac. Took almost 2 hours. Later in the day I had to do it again. This went on for 3-4 days until there were hardly any left. By that point the plants were all dead, they sucked the vines until they rotted. Oddly, they didn't touch any of the other veggies. As I was pulling out what was left of the vines, they started coming up from underground. It was gross! I dumped the shop vac down a storm drain in the street after i was sure they were all dead. It stunk up the whole street. Not sure what's going to happen this year when I plant my garden.

I live in a city of bugs. They are a simple nuisance. The worst are regular roaches, but the most noticable are the 3" water bugs (giant roach).

We employe these things called "an exterminator". They are scheduled to come every 3-4 months and stop insects from causing Mrs. Beard to freak out and jump on counter tops.

Maybe you guys should consider a service like this...
