Dwarf fruit trees. where have you been all my life?

mofo!!

i went to a nursery to look for bareroot trees. there was a peach tree there that was the size of a basket ball. the sign said, "dwarf Peach tree - PERFECT for containers"

i called my boss who i consider the local expert..he told me to come over and he showed me the exact same tree..all grown up. it is a bush!! like a mini-tree. about 4' tall and wide. i rushed back and grabbed a bareroot. i put it in a container in my dog run area.

i just had my backyard landscaped. if i knew, i would have left some area for some future tiny trees. as of now, i have a new Persimmon. if i want that dwarf, i'm gonna have to keep it pruned down aggressively. same with my lime tree..i did get a semi-dwarf lime tree tho.

tree science is cool. man, i hope i kill this thing.

Where do you think they get the tiny fruit to put on tiny waffles?

In the 70's at our old house my dad planted an orchard of dwarf fruit trees. They grew to about 10ft. Had 2 varieties of Apples, Pears, Plums, Peaches, Cherry, and Apricot. Two trees of each variety. Remember him having me plant them and making sure there was a specific distance from the ground to the first branch off the sapling.

Dad won some kind of award for his fruit trees back when he was in 4H.

I worked for a local retail nursery last year, learned a lot about those trees.
Check out the "fruit salad" variety, they have 3 different fruits grafted to one rootstock. Also check if any you are buying need a pollinator, some of the cherries do.
These guys are the biggest in the state and have a great website.

Oh yeah, check out the espalier type also, great way to get high yield in a small space, and they can be pruned to add visual interest

I wish I could grow more fruit here. I planted a few apple trees, expect to be ~8' tall I think. Love the idea, I'll see if it works out.
