i'm buying my last firearm today!!

(just in case my wife is listening)

but on paper, i am done. after today..no; 10 days after today (thank you California) when i am properly vetted and any possible emotional "need" for a firearm wears off, i will be picking up the last piece of the puzzle..no arsenal.

i get my .22 rifle today!! the $50 rebate going on right now makes the Savage Mark II FS-SR very attractive. the "SR" stands for "suppressor ready"..hahah. useless here, but in TX..it will be go-time. my friends and family have gobs of suppressors. the rifle is tiny feeling, but whatever. i can fit it IN my hunting pack.

i NEED this rifle because i am in the midst of planning a trip to AK to hunt the sooty grouse in the spring. i also have a friend that shoots pinecones off the tops of trees and sells them to the forestry dept..sounds like more fun than i can imagine. i cant legally take grouse with a .22 rifle here in CA, but i can use my pistol.

i'm up to my eyeballs in my favorite caliber to shoot. i have a lot of ammo! the .22. this is technically my wife's gift to me this holiday. i'll top it with a scope from Vortex. my brother has the exact same gun and he was hitting horseflies at 30 yards.

i think he was serious. they use the pinecones to raise seedlings to replant areas taken out due to fire and lumber companies. that is what he said.

i'm googling it now..not much i can find.

A 22LR round can go a long ways, 'especially when shot in the air at an angle.
Hopefully he is out in the middle of nowhere when he plinks them pine cones.

i was hiking with him and his dad when they told me about the pine cone program. the trees are effen tall, but the hills are crazy steep. you would still be shooting down at the pinecones. it is an odd tree. i think he called it "silver pine" or something. the cones are at the very top.

yes..safety first.

The Savages I've owned have all been very accurate, the 22wmr would do MOA at 100 yards all day long, and the 22lr versions would do MOA or better at 50y or under and just over MOA at 100.

The 22lr ones showed a VERY strong preference for anything subsonic (CCI SV, various SSHP loads from various makers, etc)

So your last gun ever and maybe no more knives or flashlights. Right. Yea that’s the ticket. Sure that sounds legit. Sure. That’s it.

Yup. I have bought my last spoon only because I haven't purchases a spoon since my last spoon which would have made that spoon my last spoon until I buy another spoon which will be my last spoon.

We call them “stupid chickens”. And you can hunt them with a stick.

Nice gun.

I bought a Savage 23D in 22H with a Unertl 12X scope for $220 from John French at the Great Western. The barrel was shimmed with several pieces of grocery bag paper... it is a tack driver. That is how I came to love the 22H.

The reason why this is going to be HIS LAST spoon is that he has to save up for a new Le Creuset enameled Dutch Oven to replace th eone that he chipped.

I figure the only thing I am really lacking in my collection is a good bolt action .22

Guy next town over has a Canadian army surplus lee enfield in .22. I guess it was a trainer rifle. Tempting, but he wants $800. Is it really that much?

If you are into collector items and military surplus stuff, then yes.

I love my Mossy 44us for the irons - otherwise I'd get a Savage FVT

My Savages were accurate and looked OK.

But if I were to only own one bolt action 22lr, I'd get a CZ. Accurate, well made (step above Savage in quality, Savage v CZ and accuracy can turn into a religion-like flame war), and almost always comes with beautiful wood.
