Yes. You should orient the grain parallel to the floor of the hallway. Otherwise, depending on the pattern, you may experience the 'laddering effect'. The effect is an unconscious urge to step up and over the cracks. Lengthwise actually invites you to walk down the hallway.

The direction of the grain in the room should be seemless from the hall. The orientation in the room will be almost unnoticeable once the floor is down.

What I did just to add a little spice was to go perpendicular at the threshold:

Any tile store sells 3" x 12" mosaics mounted on mesh that you could put in the jamb area to break up the change in direction so that you can install the tiles lengthwise in both areas. I'd leave the 45 degree stuff for the pros.

I occasionally turn one upside down....a new fad . Did one of my houses....greatroom, two long hallways, and large master bedroom....all contiguious and at a 45° angle...much more difficult, but a long run either way was gonna look like poo.

Hardwood...not tile....but my tiles are caddywhompous too...to match the floor

I had a similar dilemma in our old home and did exactly that. Run in both directions.

Each tile should be free to choose its own orientation, not questioned or ridiculed for its choice, and be free to change that choice at any time for any reason.

Yes, need to be direction neutral.

You need to mount each tile so it can spin freely and choose its own direction.
