I met the coolest old guy yesterday...

Spent most of the day yesterday sitting in a doc's waiting room while my dad was getting care. Just a half-dozen folks in the room, with an elderly couple in the corner...old guy sounded sharp, and got around fairly well. But overhearing, I went and got them a basket of snacks to pick from, refused to let them pay the couple of bucks, got them cups, etc. Man profusely thanked me...both did. Anyways, the old gentleman was talking to another geezer...asked his age, then the guy I had interacted with said he was 101....I was floored. Came out of my introvert shell....I had to chat ...so I did. We were in a different city than where we both actually live, but it's a small world....we live around the corner from each other, etc. Of course, when my dad came back out, I said...come here...introduced them. Dad is 20 years his junior, but I didn't think I'd ever get the two seperated....unlike me, dad is a "talker" . Old guy went to hs with my deceased grandmother....remembered her maiden name. Sharp as a tack he was...
made both my and dad's day.

Anyways...I just had to share....made me smile just rethinking and posting....

I have a friend who turns 105 this year. I've known her since she was younger than me at this point. She's in an assisted living place now but lived on her own until a couple of years ago. Says she's ready to move on but is disappointingly healthy, except that she's getting weaker and her sight is failing. Don't run into many people like her. Met her husband during WWII and both went through training programs after the war. They lived & worked in Central and South America, got divorced when living in Venezuela (husband was working in international banking and was screwing his secretary). She went to work for the State Department, working in Indonesia and all over southeast Asia. She was working in Saigon and got out three days before the big fall. She showed me a picture of a party where she was playing strip poker in the '50s. She led an interesting life.

Maybe a year or two ago, my partner operated on a patient who was a 94 year-old B-24 pilot. Like OP's example, this guy was sharp as a tack. I remember him waiting patiently in the recovery room gurney after his minor surgery, texting away on his phone with friends and family.

Funny type there. I had to go back and re-read it.

My former boss was tack sharp. In his words he too "early retirement" at age 92. He took his last flight as the pilot in command on his 92nd birthday. He started flying for the Army and one day they told him to put on a blue uniform, he was now in the Air Force.

He was 95 and we called him to ask the name of the plumber he used. He spit out the name and phone number like a Rolodex. He lived to age 98 and just dropped dead at home. No long illness or problems with mobility and full brain power to the end.

Met an old guy who was a buddy of my grandmother at an old peoples home. He said "What-cha been doing." I said "I've just got back from Germany and have come to see my Gran."

He said "Ah, Germany. Flown there many times... Never landed thank God, if you know what I mean."

I wish I'd done something to record a couple of old people I've known including my Grandmother who came west in a stage coach after the turn of the century. In the 80s my next door neighbor had fought in WWI in Europe, and I used to like listening to him. He brought back lots of mementoes from that time. Now I wish I'd made recordings of some of his experiences.

Yesterday was a good day. I met a gentleman at the VA clinic in Aurora that parachuted into Normandy and was surrounded at Bastogne. 94 years old 101st Airborne vet with 2 Bronze Stars and 2 Purple Hearts. He made my day. A true honor to meet a real hero!!!
