is this tire bad?

Got a flat on the daily driver and went to put on the spare. Popped the trunk, ripped out all the crap in there, go to undo the spare and saw this. Pretty sure tires aren't supposed to look like this.

How exactly does this happen to a tire? No date code on the tire so no clue how old it is but the car it's in is a 98. Surprisingly it still had air in it but what caused the failure? Water? Heat? Cold? Age?

From the looks of the wheel, that tire had been used and, my guess, exposed to elements that would deteriorate the rubber, like salt/water given your location. Then, sitting in a trunk for 20 years the natural break down happens.

Wow! That is some mind blowing disintegration happening there for sure.
No idea what caused that, looks like it was way over inflated and streched to bits.

Interested to hear what other have to say.

Cheers Richard

That's the worst I've seen. I'd bet that's a regular road tire from new.

Hey, it lasted longer than the Firestones that are on the car now! Never will I buy Firestones again. From 2014, installed in 2015 and they are all dry rotted.

I think the caption here should be "don't leave home without checking on the condition of your spare tire". That is if you have one.

I don't think a dead body in a trunk would look that bad after 20 years.

You daily drive a 4 lug car??? Then that spare is probably perfectly fine, since it's probably a 75HP car...

But seriously, anytime I put on a new set of tire, I check the spare. If the spare is bad, I swap in the best of the old tires.
