Complained bout the barber. Bro and SIL gave me a Flowbee for Christmas. Been using it ever since. Take more time to get the vacuum and hook it all up and put it all away than it does to trim my hair. Like the vaccum no loose hairs thing.

Agree. No reason for that.

Me too... I have saved a bunch of time, money and irritation in the last 15 years cutting my own.

#6 on the back and top, #5 on the sides, #3 on the side burns...easy peazzy ;)

Ten bucks???? Jeez, it takes a Jackson for a cheap Super Cuts price around here. With tip.

Your barber sounded like a *****, Baz. But $10, wow! My barber in Montana is $15 and I thought that was cheap. I tip him $2, too. I needed a haircut here in Dana Point awhile back and saw a barber pole spinning. Right on PCH. Stopped in and learned that he gets $38 for a cut. No thanks.

I’ll play the other side.

Maybe Baz came off as a know-it-all? Maybe he didn’t want to engage since he saw no end in sight?

I’m just jealous I have so little hair, a barber refused me; he pulled out a catalog and showed me what trimmer to buy. :(. Now that was a rough conversation. I didn’t engage because I saw no end in sight.

lendaddy 03-22-2018 06:17 PM

Why would you small talk to your barber? I don't get it.

*if I were a middle aged barber I'd probably be a pulsating @55hole too... though maybe not :)

windsong? Hell, we used to call those a "D.A." Popular with the guys who wanted to be punks...

My go to is in a strip mall close to work. 2 older Asian gals make it quick work. #3 clippers on sides and back with scissor cut top to blend. They have a TV going for entertainment so no talking. $10 for cut and $5 tip. Takes less than 20 minutes. Perfect.

My barber for about 20 years is four years younger than I. I quite going to him about a year ago because my wife complained about the bad hair cuts. I figured he was getting too old. I found a younger, great Chinese guy (60 yrs. old). He also does great job trimming eyebrows, ears, and nose hair. He & his wife work together. Charges $8 & I give him a $4 tip. They must be doing OK, since they are taking the last week of this month off to go on a Caribbean cruise. Baz, it was time for you to change.

So you stiffed the guy because he didn’t want to talk about castors (a meaningful conversation?) and he obviously forgot and spun you while only charging $10? (Around here a basic cut costs at least $30). I feel like I just had some kind of surreal dream where none of it makes sense, because it doesn’t. Sorry but I cannot validate your choice of action, especially for only $10.

What we have here is a failure to communicate...

Personality clash, time to move on.

In our main street barber shop we have 4 good barbers. One is gabby and likes spoons and fast cars so we chat a lot. One is quiet but does a great cut very quickly. One is a hottie late 40s Latina who takes good care of herself, likes to lean on you, and likes Harleys. One is Tony the ladies man who knows all the best happy hour spots. Cheap entertainment for $12 and the haircut is free. ;)

My barber charges $15 and I give her $20 and all is good. I'm the one that gets stiffed because they are hot Thai women doing the haircut. The owner used to do the Import Car shows and has a spectacular rack under that smock. At her old shop, the ac didn't work so good and she'd go without the smock when it was hot. Just a denim skirt and a tight tank. Oh boy!

Been going to Charlie the local barber for 7 years. (He's been at the same shop for 40 years).
We talk hairstyle ("The usual?" "Yes thanks"), weather, then cars.

My self-haircuts are so good I'm thinking of going out and buying a Miata.

It's pretty easy.

What pissed me off a while ago was I was going to a five star holiday resort so I thought I'd get a trim from my usual hair cutting guy. He was away but this guy Simon was on. I TOLD him how I wanted it but he got the number two and went straight up the side of my head with it. Chit, there was me at the luxury resort looking like a pin head gangsta. Man, that really put me off being at the mercy of these morons.

Bought a Wahl buzz / clipper kit a few years ago for about $100. I haven’t paid for a cut since and I’ve learned to do a reasonably good job myself. I don’t understand why anyone - especially a man - would pay hundreds of dollars a year for going to haircut places - chain or proprietor or otherwise. No thanks.

Then against I have a thing about not giving away my hard-earned money to people who don’t offer anything in their “service” that I can’t do myself - usually better. This includes things like fixing my own cars, bikes, virtually all home repair stuff, etc. And I like being self-reliant.
