Another movie ruined.

So my travel expenses, my time, and my relaxing experience have been stolen from me once again because the stupid 100% legal movie won't play.
Getting so sick of this...

1). Universal Studios DVD: Tried to connect to internet on it's own volition before. Like any spyware or malware does.
2). Samsung DVD player: Possibly encoded to self-destruct if never connected to internet.
3). Cinavia virus: Hard wired into Samsung players.

"Find out how piracy affects the economy."
I just did.
I don't think I will buy any of these products again.

There have been past $85,000 per incident legal judgements for 'stealing media'. Precedence.
Any bored lawyers up for a pro bono or contingency challenge?

Out of curiosity, where did you buy the DVD from?

I went through the same BS with a World at War Blue Ray set I purchased brand new from Amazon. 100% legit version, try to watch on my Window 10 computer, nope, not gonna do it, you don't have the right codec. WTF? Brand new system. All updated, 32 Gig or RAM, and a NVidia Geforce 1080Ti with more RAM than most computers. Nope, not gonna play a legit disc.

Just download the correct CODEC.

Windows is notorious for not shipping with commonly used components and leaves it up to the user to sort out.

Just curious where you sourced the DVD? IOW, is there a chance it could be counterfeit?

If you are certain it's a legitimate copy, you might try changing the audio output first (cycle through the different options during playback).
If your player has the capability to update it's firmware, you might check to make sure it's up to date as well.

(Actually a library video, but the source would be the same if I had bought it in a store.)

And where does one find the right CODEC? There is a ton of garbage out there. Finding one to download that will work is the tough part.

Gotta love it when a spanking new BR player won't play a disk without first connecting to the internet and getting the latest sw patch from the mother ship. Then even a seemingly flawless disk freezes at 40 minutes in. I went through that a couple times and said F it. We now stream movies over Amazon or Netflix and moved the player into the donation box in the garage.

HA! I remember having that problem though it has been about a decade since. I do not recall the last time I watched a movie directly from a disc. In fact we do not have any DVD/Blu-Rays anywhere in the house other than the occasional PC or game console.

Whenever I get a disc, I immediately rip it, put it on my Plex server and throw the disc in a box in the basement. I am reminded of the concept of previews when I go to the theater and get nostalgic........then I see s#!t like what you are dealing with, then I am good to go again!

And lots of stuff is not easy or even possible to find to stream. Like the BBS series, World at War all remastered.

Read the setup instructions for getting VLC player to play a blue ray. Good grief. Yea, I can do it, but what a pain in the butt. If someone was smart enough to sell a simple blue ray player for Win 10 for 25 or 30 bucks it would sell a lot. I just can't see spending much more. I can buy a hardware blue ray player for my TV cheaper than that.

There are several for pay players out there. There are utilities like Any-DVD that will let Kodi play any disk as well. We just rip everything to the HTPC unless it is a rental, then we use the BD in the HTPC to play it.

Oh, and that stand alone BD player will not stay as up to date as your computer based player will (if you like), nor will you have much control over it.
