For me, hate away:

- The E30 M3 - sure it drives well but it was gutless, and a cheaper old boxster will drive just as well just as gutlessly for 4x less $.

- The 993: gorgeous as hell, but too 1980 inside, too linear power, too quiet, too soft. I'd still own another just for looks but not at these prices

There are more but this should be enough to get flamed...

No hate, I agree w you on both cars. I thought the 993 was really nice when it was new but don't want one anymore. I'd take a good 997 over a 993 any day of the week and a 997 turbo over a 993 turbo, etc...

Yup. The price vs value proposition for most "collector" cars is pretty nuts.

This was the Fiat I wanted when I was in high school. Instead I wound up with a 124 Spider, an '81 Turbo. Still got that car and I have too many so no X1/9 for me, but I wouldn't kick it out of bed.

We had a 124 wagon and a 128 sedan in the 70's. I think the 124 had rust on it new when my dad bought it. I remember the 128 got a flat tire on a run to Karlsruhe (Autobahn), the subframe broke in half trying to jack it up. Stay away from them. The staging area for Fiat Europe was about 2 km from where I lived in Lahr. Always toyed with the idea of a Dino, but too many headaches.

I had a 79 X1/9. Fantastic chassis in desperate search of an engine.... I believe 67 horsepower stock carbureted 1500cc.

A buddy and I (buddy was a mechanical engineering student) put a 13B rotary with a GM FWD transaxle into it. With headers and aftermarket fuel injection was probably a pretty solid 180-190 horsepower.

Much more fun to drive after that!!!
